webOS 1.4.1.1 for Verizon imminent? Keyboard-repeat fix inside; Update: Lands 4/28 78
Update: an anonymous tipster has confirmed that the update should start rolling out tomorrow, April 28th. As per usual with webOS updates, they'll get pushed out to users over the course of 10 days or so, but we're guessing that also as per usual, you'll be able to hit the Updates app to get it right away. Screencap from Verizon's system after the break - thanks anonymous tipster!
Broncot in our forums took a gander at Verizon's Palm Pre support page and found a new link to this support PDF detailing the changes coming in webOS 1.4.1.1. First off - we're happy to see that the delay means that Verizon is getting the full 1.4.1.1 update instead of the basic 1.4.1 update - the difference being that 1.4.1.1 handles background processes more elegantly.
Otherwise we're looking at a similar list of improvements that we saw on other devices: improved Bluetooth, fixes for the photo app, the return of the forward gesture, and best of all for long-suffering Verizon Palm Pre Plus owners, "More accurate keyboard input."
Verizon's support page still says "Coming Soon!" Let's hope so - we're eager to get this update behind us so we can start agitating for the speed and battery-life improvements in the next version of webOS.

nice. I know 3 people who have recently gotten the pre plus on verizon who are anxiously waiting for 1.4.1.1. It's about time because 1.4 was a totally bug-riddled disaster.
A Verizon subscriber has ACTUALLY RECEIVED a 1.4.1 update? WOW! Are they in the US?
I've heard sooooo many RUMORS ... I'm wondering: "Where's The Beef" (An Old WENDYS analogy ... from and OLDER Wendys commerical) ;)
OMG, Keyboard fix? For Reals?!
I have 1.4.1.1 on Sprint and still have had the repeating key problem once or twice.
i've been a pre plus user since it came out on verizon and a pre user before that on sprint. I love the slightly clickier keyboard, but the double type issue was driving me CRAZY. Found out it was some sort of loose contact behind the keyboard and traded it in under warranty. My new pre plus types great, and I only mention this to remind people dealin with the double type craziness that a software update most likely won't fix it.
Thanks for that note! I'll keep it in mind, but I'm still going to wait and see how much this update helps before doing so. I do hate having to reload everything on my phone again. :)
me too first with sprint user for almost 8 years and now that palm when to verizon as palm pre plus i was like i better get some really got network and yes vz totally rocks. cant wait to get the new update.
Actually it's both. Could be hardware or software, or combination of both.
In hardware interfacing, this situation is called "switch bouncing". It's the electromechanical nature of switches that cause this phenomenon, and there are many ways to fix this, including software timing in the keyboard driver or hardware (switches that bounces less and/or electronic gates, buffers) Cheap switches tend to bounce more, but switches that don't bounce are VERY expensive.
Oh the sleepless nights back in University...
+1... They are probably increasing the debounce time for the keys so that false keys presses are ignored. This is a pretty easy issue to fix via software.
Ah yes... debouncing. That was the word.
For those who want to read more, see here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Switch#Contact_bounce
How nice this would be indeed. I'm really starting to see how others had been so incredibly sick of the keyboard errors. I feel like I'm getting them more and more now, but that could simply be because I am finally able to type faster on it than I could when I first got the phone. I can't wait for this update and I certainly hope it's SOON!
(Yeah, I also recently came across the image overwriting issue and It made me very not-happy.)
I agree that for me, the double typing seems more frequent after 1.4 update but I'm not positive it's because I'm typing more or the keyboard is breaking in (not in a good way). Who can tell when the keys are gel. I can still be accurate if I'm very precise and careful but it's a hassle. Why would I care about Docs to go or full text editor if everything I type is a mess?
I rarely use camera so haven't noticed much. In all, 1.4 upgrade was a welcome update. Looking forward to 1.4.1.1!
Nothing on the Palm.com site yet... But this certainly sounds like a reason to stay up late and watch for it... Kind of like waiting up on Christmas Eve!
Here's to hoping 1.4.1 rocks! This keyboard issue is driving me crazy!! Double digits and no digits! I'm doing the same; i.e. going to wait until 1.4.1 hits before trading irt the keyboard issue. Hope it's a software issue vice hardware.
today'ss my birthday...maybbe I can give back an extra bs? ;)
At first, I was very pissed it has taken this long for the update but now that it will include a keyboard fix.... take your time! LOL
"More accurate keyboard input."
Whoa! This was a SOFTWARE problem? I was about to take the thing back for a new one.
"Forward Gesture"
Yes! For as long as I've owned my phone I've tried the forward gesture instinctively but it (obviously) never worked.
Is it enabled in preferences (screen & lock -> advanced gestures)?
With it enabled three gestures work:
- long swipe (left to right, right to left) switches apps
- short left swipe (middle to left or right to middle) goes to prev web page in browser
- short right swipe (middle to right or left to middle) goes to next web page in browser
With advanced gestures disabled the long swipe doesn't work but the short swipes work the same way as when advanced gestures are enabled.
Hope this helps...
Oooooh. Holy crap, this is a really cool feature. Thanks for explaining that to me -- I had advanced gestures turned off because I thought "any" right to left (or left to right) gesture would switch between apps, effectively disabling the "back" button. But I know now that that is not the case.
Can anyone at Precentral get a quote from inside source of Telcel M
Same situation here man, I've been almost everyday checking the updates application hoping to get the WebOS update but nothing so far...
Regarding your issue with your camera pictures, is there any chance you have/did have installed the Photowall application? It has a problem with the saving method that deletes any picture you take even though you don't use the program to take them o even if you have deleted it.
If that's the case, just change the folder name that Photowall created to save pictures to something else (for example I named it "Saved") and that should fix the problem.
I work for Big Red and the email just came thru that we will be dropping 1.4.1.1 begining tomorrow 04-28 and running thru the next 10 days. No way to know when your push will come but you can continue to check thru updates and see probably before recving the email from vzw........
I like you...will you be my friend? lol j/k
Seriously though, thanks for the update. It's good to hear verification of things from those who work for the company. Many thanks for the update. :)
Someine sent this guy a free Touch Stone. Dude, thanks for telling us! Please stop by and set our expections as often as possible. You are a great friend to us and we appreciate it!
GPS????
I think this is the question of the Hour...
All I can say is that it better work tomorrow or I'm finally leaving Verizon when my plan is up. I'm tired of them crippling phones and forcing you to pay extra for them to work. Last I checked, that was called extortion.
Seriously, I've been through this with Verizon for all too long and this is the last straw with me and them. AT&T will get my business moving forward if they don't enable GPS without VZ Nav.
I'm hoping they fixed it. If they did, I'm sure they won't post it because then that would be admission to their wrong-doing, which their lawyers would not like.
So, is this keyboard fix in the Sprint update? Cause I noticed that my Pre often misses some letters even though I know for a fact I hit it. I wonder if what ever compensation they put for Verizon Pres are in the update released on Sprint.
+1 same missing keys problem here on a Sprint Pre...
Any idea if this will give us the NFL Mobile App?
Highly doubtful. I keep asking this every time they mention it on facebook.
My first Pre Plus had a finicky S key. If I explicitly pressed it, it worked fine. But in the normal course of typing it would almost always miss (and this was from day 1, even my palm profile name got setup with a missing S). I had Verizon send me another, that one works perfectly on all keys. I've never had any other keyboard issue, and have done a decent bit of typing. None of that proves anything, just wanted to add my keyboard experience to the pot.
I'm a Sprint user and I've tried using the forward gesture, and can't get it to work even with 1.4.1.1... anyone else having this problem? :(
My main concern has been the keys, so if this fixes it GREAT. But my other issue (which I can generally get around with the workaround mentioned in the forums using Trapster), is the GPS issue. It SURE WOULD HAVE BEEN NICE if they had fixed this issue. I guess we can now assume it is there on purpose to try to force us to buy VZW Navigator. Curse you, Big Red! :-/
Yeah, I also would like to know if this will address the GPS issue... :-\
I hear that Sprint's version of 1.4.1.1 fixed the GPS (or at least attempted to). I hope there's a fix for Verizon's.

Don't get too excited about the improved keyboard accuracy. On Sprint, the 1.4.1.1 updates (yes... it affects the Sprint version as well) fixed the double character issue but replaces it with missing characters and occasional double characters as well (mostly missed character though). It isn't as noticeable or annoying as the double character though since it happens less frequently.
I already get the missing characters alongside the double characters anyway. Just makes me wonder what changes I will really see with this update. (btw, I noticed most of my double character issues are when I'm sending txts.)
I get a lot of errors when searching the WebOS app store, Google, or anything that involves typing. It's especially irritating with searching because it HAS to be fixed, whereas a text message is not as important.
Crap, i hear that I need to uninstall my WebOSQI mods before upgrading. But doesn't this upgrade get 'pushed' on Verizon?
Should I uninstall my mods NOW?
Theres no need to uninstall themes or patches due to the APU thingy (very technical, I know I just cant remember the proper acronym). However, if you're like me then you better uninstall any new kernels or kernel patches (like for overclocking).
Ah, cool. Don't have any of those installed. Thank you!
Correction, You should always remove themes before an update. Do to AUPT- Auto Update Patch Technology, you may leave the patches in. After the update you can update the patches via Preware. I would also remove the overclock kernel to be safe.

Fixing a hardware problem with software = tenuous at best. I hope it does the trick though as I'd like my next Pre to be clicky too! Oh, and to ease everyone's suffering too, I guess.
I also doubt that a software update will fix the keyboard issue. My Pre Plus was doing the douuuuubbbblllle typing thing. I was waiting for an update, but just couldn't take it anymore. I returned it under warranty and received a refurbished model. Keyboard problem fixed!
ok,
please someone who knows let me know:
I have about 25 patches 1 theme and te Superman Kernal all installed.
what do I uninstall before doing the upgrade.
or what would be safe to uninstall.
I read someone above mention WebOS IQ.
what is that?
I am pretty sure all you have to uninstall is the kernal which is easily done now through the super preKernel. I a going to also uninstall the theme I have since there is a newer one of it only for the 1.4.1
If they do in fact fix the keyboard then the delay has been worth it. I sort suspected all along that the delay was partially b/c the pre plus was getting some verizon specific fixes. Now if only they also fixed the GPS...

Spoke with a Palm Regional rep today and this was confirmed for 9pm tomorrow.
Just to clarify... any patches installed must be removed before updating, correct?
Again...thanks to AUPT, patches DO NOT have to be removed. Just install the update, then open Preware and update your patches. Replacement kernels (overclocking) and themes still need to be removed.
I can survive with a typo, not really a big deal, even though mine doesnt have the keyboard issue. The fact that their is a feature of the phone that either doesnt work or is being crippled is what makes me mad. A fix for that would have been much better then a fix for the keyboard.
Er.... being on my 3rd Pre Plus the keyboard issue is very real and needed addressing long ago. This may be too little too late for some, but at least this poor phone is getting some love before the HTC launch.
I hate that keyboard issue. Hopefully this update fixes it, if not then on to the verizon store for a new pre plus.
Same here.
I'm willing to wait for the patch, but I've had enough. If this doesn't fix it, the phone is getting replaced. I just can't keep putting up with this.
as 28th is the day of france release of webos i thought a 1.45 would be in the pipes worldwide anyway. but perhaps this was just a dream of getting a fast calendar and bluetooth/mail/sms filesending for contacts vcards and appointments ical...
had my update on the 27th here in the UK
Is there a forum thread on this where people can post when their update was 'pushed' to their phone? I'm interested to know how things progress. I have a launch day Pre+ so I was hoping for an early push? My keyboard issue is pretty noticeable and I'm hoping for improvement here.
Not all phones are affected by the double keyboard problem. That is why replacing the phone sometimes fixes the problem. It is apparently a problem with the versioning of the keyboard.
For those phones that do have the problem, this software update is supposed to fix the problem.
We will have to wait and see if it really does.
I am disappointed in VZWs response to this problem. When you call support they sound shocked and surprised by this problem as if you are the very first customer to call them and report the problem.
my keyboard issue seemed to all but disappear when I had the 800MHz kernel installed..now that I've removed it to install the update it seems worse. It's hard to tell if it's a s/w, h/w, or combination of both. I'll install the update and the 800MHz kernel and see what happens. If it don't improve then I'll do the dreaded refurb swap..
Iveeee beeeen usssinnng thhheee onscreeen keeeyboard from hoomebreww whillle a waait for a fiiix for this; I reeallly hoe thy finnnd a fix. I miiiss thhee kkeyboar
checking for updates every 5 minutes is killing me!
So with all this HP excitement, did Verizon forget about the update on the 28th?
So with all this HP excitement, did Verizon forget about the update on the 28th? Has anybody from Verizon gotten their update yet?
Not mme. Hopinggg 9p reeeferrs to 9pm pst (12 am est).
(note: :1(board erors are as typedd, not an exaggeration)
I hadn't thought about it, but gchase3 is right - that's what happened with the last rollout. Maybe I will stop hitting update and just go to bed. I am SUCH a geek.
Downloading 1.4.1.1 to my verizon Pre+ right now! Crossing my fingers for the keyboard fix!
Downloading.....finally
boom, 10 after midnight eastern time and suddenly my pre 'saw' the update was out there. it is on the way.
Downloading right now. Pre just crashed. Hmm....
Got the update to
Downloading as I type :)
Update complete and installed successfully! Thankfully I'm out in Cali and it's only 10pm, so I can do some much awaited testing before I call it a night :)
