webOS 1.4.1, Project Ares Beta 2 Released to Select Developers 55

webOS 1.4 is the bees knees, but there have been reports of a bug or two and the altered way it handles multitasking has caused some headaches for some developers. As we mentioned in that story, Palm had promised an update 'within 2-3 weeks' and it looks like they are making good - we have word that Palm is currently letting some developers have a crack at the Release Candidate for webOS 1.4.1, which should allow apps to persist in the background for a little longer than 1.4.0 let them, along with a new JSON parser and presumably various other small changes.
We also hear there's an early access release for the 2nd beta of Project Ares, the in-browser app development system. Excelsior!

Forget 1.4.1, bringout 2.0. Why is Palm holding it back? They are doomed. They must start over with 2.0 before 1.x reaches full functionality!! If WebOS reaches full funtionality and beyond it will destroy Palm's reputation for half-baked, chaotic, cutting edge O/S's. We need something bigger and unrefined to jam up our current spec Pre and Pixis! And we need a new device last week to put our current devices and unsold overstock to shame. We need to burn off Palm's remaining cash to make a takeover by a white knight more unappealing. In Palm's final 12 month's of cash, they need to live like life ends in six weeks!

Well, we're all waiting for 1.4.1,cause my phone freezes sometimes & I experienced some volume toggle problem. Palm hurry up, please!
what to improve on
1. make the video/camera load fast. the coolest thing was the ability to snap a pic every second. thats now gone. also takes a day to get the video ready to take, and enable the freakin flash.
2. Merge the videos/photos together. Dont make us open a card for videos, a card for photos, then if we browse back and forth in the camera app we have to go in via either the camera or video app selected. This is nonsense. Merge it all together and call it media
3. Take the facebook beta version and make it un-beta.. then put it all over the app catalog so we aren't confused on 5 different facebook apps
4. fix the bug where you can't usiversal search something if it pulls a matching app
( *open your phone
*type in webos
*notice how you cant search it in google since it found web as an application)
5. Clean up the app catalog, only let 5 star apps sit at the top if 10+ people have reviewed. This will stop brighthouse and dijt from getting crap noticed because 1 person reviewed at 5 and im sure its not the developer reviewing it.. never that. lol
I have others and actual scripts written with bugs jotted down.. just wish palm would hire me. lol
For point 4 above, if you type in "web", but want to google search it instead, tap on "Find..." at the top. A dropdown box appears with all the default search options.
I only recently discovered this myself lol
just click in the tab you typed in for 4
#4 - check it out. Type in "webos" and then once you do, tap where it says "Find..." Notice that you get the same 4 Google, Google Maps, Wikipedia, twitter" options

there is a patch in preware for flash enable while recording video.
Hmm. i didnt know that one. Ill have to test it out. I would love it if somebody would leak a change request or requirements document for the releases. Its nice to have bullet points and a gist of things changed but i want the actual test cases. lol
this cannot come soon enough. 1.4 has been really disappointing to say the least. Some of the new features are great, but the whole os has slowed down a ton. I'm going to start only updating when a new release decides to add .1 to it's name
for your #4 complaint..there is no bug...you could always tap magnifying glass/text input area and google and other search engines appear.
I absolutely love(or is it hate?) that we need a "mini" update everytime we receive a major update...
Lets not ever expect a major update to be flawless....not being a troll, but isnt it a pain that it always happens this way?
Also add this to your list....
1) When in the phone app on a phone call, when you want to hang up, the screen freezes for about 1-6 seconds and wont let you HANG UP!!! I've left like 6 messages because it wont let me hang up....that is extremely annoying
- Too Many Cards are Open.........NOT! only been an issue with me since 1.4
-Camera lag and funky video issues....just restating the obvious and previously pointed out problems, because they stick out like sore thumbs
...and phone resets that occur when you try to turn the screen back on. Happens a least every other day.
Man....seems like this update may actually require a whole "tenth" to its name (1.5)
-if they have to fix this many issues and actually fix them, that is...

too many cards open was and issue for me in 1.3.5. I have less problems in 1.4, still hope it get fixed better though.

The phone gets slow once you start launching the video/camera app. I notice it always sticks around in jstop even after closed. This hogs up some memory.
You know what they say.. a reboot a day keeps the doctor(webos) away. Just remember to reboot here and there and the phone app wont be as slow. i admit it sucks when its bogged won especially when you answer, then have to wait 4 seconds before the buttons pop up only to hit speakerphone. this sucks when your going 90mph on the parkway in pittsburgh. lol

I hope 1.4.1 brings:
1) Improved battery life, which is strange because it started out being great and now it dies faster than ever.
2) Improved Web Browser. Some sites I cannot even go to, like Sprint's forums. My browser just spins and does not load the page. Also, I see the "Unable To Load Page" warning much more than previous OS versions.
3) My WIFI connection, and sometimes EVDO connection, drops multiple times throughout the day without reason.
4) I have had enough of the "Sorry Too Many Cards" warning. I receive the warning with no cards open. How can the Pre be advertised as a "Smartphone with multitasking abilities" if I cannot multitask.
5) My phone slows down to a crawl without doing anything at all. Seems like a Memory Leak issue.
6) My volume toggles on its own and it is worse with a bluetooth headset. Plus my call volume must be low because everyone wants me to scream at them in the phone's headset. But I am heard much better through a bluetooth headset.
Suggestions for Palm.
1) Offer the Pre Plus on Sprint and give Sprint customers the ability to upgrade to it for 100 dollars. And stop production on the Sprint webOS models.
2)Increase the Processor clock to 550Mhz or 600Mhz.
3) Offer customers a 1400mah battery with the new upgraded phone due to the increase in processor clock speed. Offer it to current Sprint Pre owners in a new Pre Plus phone package for $150. This way more phones would be sold because nearly everyone on Sprint will upgrade.
4) Advertise and place the Pre on more carriers until you can build the capital for a new phone model. And get with HTC next time around. I really like webOS but hate the hardware. My phone shakes worse than a sinner in church.
It would be great to see Palm work with HTC on the next phone.
It's underclocked because the chips burn at 600.

can they please add multiple pics to the sms or email! That's mad annoying when you have to keep sending multiple message to send out pics.
I agree when you get pics from people and it's like 3 in one message
I'm pretty sure you can attach multiple pictures to an email. Dunno about MMS's though.
Someone's breaking their NDA. Please keep a lid on stuff in the future, if you're reading this. I don't want to give Palm rightful cause to be less open with developers by not honoring our developer agreements (i.e. "Honor thy NDA").
Everyone knew Palm give some devs early access to a WebOS update.. They didn't tell what's all going to be fixed. I doubt it's going to be huge
Sure, but it's one of those "slippery slope" things. The development community as a whole would get the raw end of the deal if someone went too far and Palm reacted to protect their business plans. What I *don't* want is the Apple approach, and I want to make sure people take their relationship with Palm seriously, that's all.

Yeah i see no time frame, nor specific list of what will be included so its not really breaking the NDA. If anything hopefully palm is reading this and it helps and has the reverse effect.

after the 1.4, my pre run slower and just did not function right.
last wee i was connected to my computer and installed a calculator, then it turned off itself and when it came back on filecoster and preware were gone, not will not connect to computer to reinstall or uninstall to do web doc master reset.
i tried a manual reset and nothing changes even when i press the orange button+ sym and pawer for master reset and still no changes.
when i say no changes all apps from i downloaded from anywhere will not delete uninsatll or anything.
now i have to do an exchange from new pre under 30 days old but over 30 min to a used pre and who know how old it is or the issues it has from the other person doing an exchange. refubished or not still not fair deal.
I am having constant issues with Luna restarting for no reason and/or not locking the screen correctly (especially with charger). Was NEVER a problem until 1.4.0. :( I hope the update addresses these problems. It is one thing to live with reduced functionality, low battery life, and slow performance (all compared to my Treo 700p), but when it suddenly becomes unreliable/unstable, that is just too much!!!

Palm, please ignore the pressure placed on you by consumers to release updates before they're ready.
I've been having some very important pics taken by the phone be overwritten with new pics and it is extremely maddening! I surely hope this bug is in the fix list for this release.

Palm you rock! My phone isn't perfect but I'm not experiencing a lot of what's going on. The only thing that's fishy is sometimes it goes dim and it won't respond to my touch, but then it brightens up and is responsive again...Who knows.

fix the bug that causes my photos to delete overnight!!! I've lost like 15 already. :-(
1.4.1 means two things to me.
1) new little bugs get fixed, nice
2) one step closer to the 750/800 mhz patch being in Preware, oh yeah baby!
With this new release I am hoping that Palm figures out who in their programming team is coding the wrong things and messing up our phones, and FIRES THEM. Every single major update we get adds new features but ALWAYS breaks some of the ones we already had. This is annoying to say the least.
Fixes needed for new update:
1. Fix the file overwrite issue for cam/videos.
2. Enable flash for the video recorder (fuck the patch (although it's appreciated) some people don't want/cant patch their phones.
3. Enable contact specific SMS/MMS tones
4.Fix the "Too Many Cards" issue.
5. Speed up the system as a whole.
6.Really fix the battery performance (don't just say you have and you havent). Better yet replace all of the OEM batteries out there with 1450-1500mAh batteries for a nominal fee (and swappable @ any Sprint/Verizon/At&T store).
7. Allow Microsoft documents to be edited/sent/viewed natively on the phone.
8. Enable us to directly download/share MP3 files from the web or MMS.
9. Open up the frickin' microphone already (can anyone say Shazam).
My last phone was an LG Viewty, which was released and then it felt like the company forgot it had ever produced one. No software updates at all.
Would just like to thank Palm for producing a really good phone, with a great OS, and supporting it. I live in South Africa, got the phone in Dec, and have received 3 pretty major updates OTA since then.

What about fixing the blue tooth connectivity they destroyed with 1.4 for anyone driving a BMW as well as other vehicles and using certain headsets?
"We are aware of the problem" is not a solution! Also the battery is worse than ever and I never had a problem with "Too many cards" until 1.4. I'll give back the video I have yet to use for the way the blue tooth worked in 1.3.5. Hardly a "smartphone". Just biding my time to see what the new releases from HTC and Blackberry will be and then its bye bye Palm! (And I've been a Palm user to at least 10 years!)

thank you. i havent been able to update/delete on two patches. the sms contact tone cant update and that one i like so it would be nice to see it working again. the sound toggle patch for the camera doesnt work with 1.4 and deleting it isnt an option since it wont let me. ive been getting IPKG errors with each patch update/or delete. im still getting the "too many cards" error. so, lets see what happens with this update....fingers crossed.
