webOS 1.4.5 coming to O2 Germany tomorrow morning (Update: landing now) 52

by Dieter Bohn Wed, 30 Jun 2010 9:35 pm EDT

While we can't know about any other carriers in other countries, customers of O2 in Germany have something to smile about, the "next Palm update" will "probably" come tomorrow morning. The update is minor, yes, but it should bring PDK apps to the Pixi and open up both the Pre and Pixi to 'indie' PDK apps like 3D games from smaller companies.

Can we just say that we love O2 Germany for how they sell unlocked devices, how they have supported webOS, and how well the communicate with their customers? Viel Erfolg!

Update: Arthur lets us know that some folks in our forums are reporting that the update has arrived. At 9 megs, it's not a huge update.

I hope it comes to us later in the day...that would be very nice treat.

I wonder if Nam guy gets it before Germ.

Arividelchi

Nam guy didn't ;)

For those wondering, Viel Erfolg = Much Success, according to babelfisch.yachoo.com.

Yes, "viel Erfolg" means "much success" if you translate it word by word, but the meaning of "viel Erfolg" is rather "good luck" ;)

That is why I really haven't hyperventilated over this update.

Fitting that a guy named Dieter brings us the story about 02 Germany. Oh, what's that? He brings us all of the good stories on P|C? (Apologies to Derek et al.)

Not a big deal, actually. 1.4.5 = *yawn* for typical WebOS user.

Well, I'll be ready then :D I'll keep hitting that "nach Updates suchen"-button.

Well I'm looking forward to it just because of the text centre-ing thing...it drives me up the wall that it doesn't happen at the moment

Ich liebe O2 Germany f

Those unlocked phones are likely a requirement of the German government. Just like it is in other European countries.

Ha! No, unfortunately not.. iPhone is exclusive and always has been, with SIM-lock. It's O2 doing this.

I think it's against the law in France, or something.

They are not. For instance the iPhone in Germany has a SIM-lock. It's just O2 Germany sells the phones via O2-MyHandy as well (without a service-contract) and this way it's easier for them to sell all of their phones without a lock. At least, that's how I explain it to myself.

None of my O2-phones have been locked but all T-Mobile-Phones of friends have been and are locked.

Typical! I thought I'd wait with trying Uberkernal after the 1.4.5 update. Then I saw the news about the PDK app contest being moved by two weeks, I thought I might as well try it now if the update doesn't come in the next weeks.
Just playing with a nice and responsive phone, I read this.... Now unistall UK or wait with the 1.4.5 update till Rod has everything cleared?

@Hz-R You don't need to remove Uberkernal for the update. It will just disable itself and will reactivate when they get the update finished and you download it.

delete

it us over the air safe... why do you say delete it?

Well let us know how big it is... I'm running out of space on my Pre and need to know how much to clear

I agree. I have 0.2 GB of space left. :( New hardware please.

It is 9mb. I'm d/ling now.

Only 6 weeks until we see 1.4.5 on Verizon - looking forward to it!

Bet Verizon still doesn't fix the GPS bug.

12.. You gotta realize they got their prized "Droid X" coming in two weeks and they have to figure out what to do with the recently killed Kin. Their minds are too full at the moment to know what 0 + 0 equals..

ya, das ist sehr gut!

what palm needs to focus on is quality apps in the catalog not games. Most people don't care about games and games aren't selling these phones. Instead focus on optimizing and better api so we can at least get some worthwhile apps.

I think improving the game quality on the phone is a great priority right now, especially in terms of wooing a younger audience to webOS. There's a surprising segment of the cell phone market that wants a mobile gaming device to have "cell phone" capabilities.

that being said, I totally agree about APIs. I would love some camera based apps, ala hipstamatic on webOS, and not to mention voice dialing/text/recording capabilities.

the quality of recorded music that I've made in videos on my Pre tells me that with the right access, you could make a powerful "studio" app (maybe 2 tracks?) on the device, and that would be amazing for a musician to hammer out rough ideas into demos anywhere an idea hits them.

the devs just need access!!

is this 1.4.5?

GREAT! the update is finally arrived in France!!!

it seems the update is landing in the countries where it's already July. First Germany, then France... USA should be in about 2 hrs (that's when it'll be tomorrow in west coast).. Or worst case when it'll be tomorrow in Hawaii which is about 4 hrs from now I think.

well, well, well... i'm a pixi + owner, so this update was cool for new apps and games, but no new apps in the app catalog :(

Downloading ...

"Palm webOS 1.4.5 wird gerade heruntergeladen."

nice.

Hmmm, my Palm Pre @ O2 Germany does not offer webOS 1.4.5 yet. I'll check it again later today.

Double post. Ouch!

the update in 1.4.5 is also available in France (with SFR) for a size of about 9MB

france 1.4.5 too

hmpf,
had to Doctor my Pre.
no idea what went wrong, maybe forgot some important patch to remove!?

....

Anyone in UK got it yet?

Update is on my Pre, no changes noticeable.
I want flashhhhh!!Bring it to us NOW!

One thing that many don't realize is so important about 1.4.5 is that it will bring the same OS version to all carrier phones.

Right now, you have 1.4.1.1 on some, AT&T has 1.4.2 on the Pre Plus, and I think 1.4.3 on the Pixi Plus. This makes it a bit more difficult in some ways for testing since in theory at least, things could break on 1.4.2 or 1.4.3.

Look at My Tether, which doesn't work quite right on the AT&T phones(USB Tethering is broken) and from what others have said, it works properly under 1.4.1.1.

So, now we just need AT&T employees to get their heads out of Steve Jobs' ass and pay attention to what is going on outside of Apple releases!

Already downloaded (germany O2 Pre in CZ). I noticed all patches have to be updated manually, is that correct? I almost forgot how "ugly" is Pre without patches:)

yeah, you have to update your patches manually, but in the past, you also had to uninstall all patches before applying an update.. Imagine the pain in the ass THAT was.

To all that have webos 1.4.5 any new indie 3D apps in App Catalog yet?

Interesting no 1.4.5 on Sprint, Verizon, or ATT in the States. Hmm...

Wonder if Palm (HP...) has something up their sleeves???

Also interesting Europe came first...that is kinda backwards from the usual. Maybe has to do with the fact that the 50% off was US only (yes???) and how this 1.4.5 brings support to add these options for those outside the USA.

Not sure, but I'm looking forward to 1.5, 2.0 or whatever Palm (not saying HP anymore...like knowing Palm is still working on things and in-charge of webOS) has up their sleeves.

adobe released the Flash 10.1 to all smartphone providers. Just waiting on the providers to release it to us (The customers) Update if you go to the adobe website on your phone it no longer says Adobe@ Flash@ Player 10.1 is coming to Palm Webos@ in the first half of 2010. it now says Palm@ continues to work with Adobe@ to bring Flash@ Player 10.1 to Webos@ as quickly as possible. At present, the integration work between Flash Player and webos is undergoing extensive testing to ensure we deliver a high quality implementation.

Contact Bug

Does anybody else have this contact bug since webOS 1.4.5 ?

In regular contact view, the notes do show all the HTML line breaks coding.
Like:
"GL:(br /)Hans Muster(br /)(br /)Kd Dienst:(br /)Vreni Andersheiss (und etwas Text)(br /)"

I haven't seen / realized any other code but the line break (br /).
note: here used () instead of , else it wouldn't display. :-)

Further more, it does only happen in the view mode.
In the edit mode (when you edit a contact), the notes are displayed fine.

Anybody else experience this.
BTW: I have a German setting, running Palm Pre Plus in Switzerland.

so has everywhere got this update except ireland?
and still no flash...
