webOS 1.4.5 hits Europe, Bell Canada; US carriers standing by 88
While the prediction in our forums hasn't panned out, webOS 1.4.5 is still really real and now on its second carrier - O2 UK is getting it now a couple of weeks after O2 Germany made the cut. Go hit the update app if you're on that network, but first check the list of patches that don't play nice with updates.
One last note, turns out that while the main gist of webOS 1.4.5 is to expand the number PDK gaming apps (and to bring them to the Pixi), there is a bug where some games aren't able to correctly run or save their data due to what boils down to a permissions issue - details here on Palm's developer forums. If you're having an issue with the game (and aren't a hacker), the best fix is to do a full webOS doctor (once the 1.4.5 doctor becomes available, natch).
Update: we're hearing it's hit other carriers in Europe and should be on Bell in Canada as well. Chime in on the comments how it's working for you!

Is it confirmed that the jailing bug still exists? Alot of people on the forums have been speculating that the delay was to fix the improper jailing. If not, I guess palm wants to get 1.4.5 out before PDK hot apps starts, even if the known bug persists.
Would like to second this. As of last week there wasn't a known OTA solution to this problem. Hopefully a quick bugfix was fast-tracked to fix this issue.
OK, apparently, the jailing bug persists, but there is a work around available to developers; so if a PDK app does not work correctly, it can be updated by the developer to fix it. Not the most elegant solution I guess, but I'm still excited to see all the (broken) PDK apps!

I suspect it's because they like to work out bugs abroad before releasing an update in the US.

Homebrew only changes EXTREMELY specific things.
Okay...WAS downloading it. Then, it stopped downloading, started "checking for updates" and will now only display the 1.4.1 page. Psych!

Wow, Palm is down to the wire again with this update (ok, down the wire that had already moved at least once!). Glad they are finally getting it out, but wow, what a wait! We had how many updates in the first 6 months, 5? and this is only the second in the second 6 months. Sure, less to fix, less to add, etc. And I bet a lot of their resources have been going into 2.0 which is a huge leap from where we are now.
I also wonder if we'll see Flash before 2.0 comes out!

Yeah I got an email from palm today stating 1.4.5 was out. I was hoping it would land tonight or tomorrow.
That article in the email about 1.4.5 rolling out was from their blog on July 1 before Germany rolled it out and discovered the PDK bug.
I'm experimenting with this release anyways. I'm not running the update app and I want to see how long it takes before the update is pushed to me. I'm trying to get a better sense of how webOS is for a more casual user.
I went on an "update strike" once for a significant update. It prompted me constantly, but never interferred with functionality. I went a week, then accepted.
Yea I got that e-mail too, was like WOO REALLYN and went and ran update :( but this is gooood news, should be soon!!
This has become somewhat funny, since this was first rumored to be out a month and a half ago. I think it's even funnier that there are still guys being impatient about this update, it doesn't do a whole lot right this second.
+1 I got an email from palm saying to double check the compatibilty of your apps b/c in 2 weeks it'll be released. That was in May.

I doctored my pre, then I pressed refresh on the updates screen 20 times on my Bell palm pre, I finally got the update. It's downloading as we speak.
Even though it doesn't say how much MB's the update is, it looks like it's more then 9mb. Which is what I saw on a 02 1.4.5 update screenshot. It's taking a while to update. I could be wrong though. I'm downloading on wi-fi as well.
Its a 9.5mb download, getting it now on O2 uk.

ummm the one thing I know about palms update is that you have 2 weeks of bugs so I think they are testing europe first lol sorry to say that..and fixing the bugs cuz we always get the update on sprint first then our phones go stupid till the next mini update to fix bugz like a few weeks latter so I hope every1 has a gud update ...not to much to update probly just making shure adoby works right and the new pdk stuff gud luck .... Have you tried uberkernel with compcache?
They have fix the to many cards error. You should check out the forums, all of the problems the pre HAD have been fixed.

so I just went through the phone and deleted a ton of apps, patches,govnah and uberkernal. I have no too many cards error as I have all my emails set to check once every 6hr after 10pm and only current complaint it that well, 800 is very easy to get used to! Noticed considerably less bogging down after I uninstalled wikki where or whatever it is called just an fyi

Gota say I love my pre and can't wait for my update even better yet 2.0 and with palm being married to hp and having access to all that money I'm hoping they spend it like my wife would. I think I'm gona stick around and see just what palm can do now with these funds. I've tryed the evo and other android phones and they are nothing compared to my pre. Nycinter...My wife has an evo and wants to trade me for my pre. _ _ _ _ no!

More wait time for the update to arrive in the US? Well, I suppose I can be patient, but it's wearing quite thin right now. Don't get me wrong, I love my Pre, but now I'm thinking I should've gone Android when I upgraded my phone on Verizon.
Why? Android updates take much longer, are farther apart, and the majority of devices still use 1.x
Some of the newer phones on Verizon that ran the Android OS I could've gotten had 2.0, or close to. Well, at the time. =/
Depending on the one I could've purchased, I would've had Froyo by now. And not to mention Flash and thousands upon thousands more apps than what the App Catalog has right now. =/
Like I said, I love my Pre, but I'm just questioning the worth of my purchase.
Well the Pre is a better choice. I am not saying this because of fanboyism, but because it is the truth.
The majority of those apps in Android do the same things (i.e. copycat/lookalike apps). Most webOS devs genuinely care about the platform and their userbase, whereas most Android devs don't and most iPhone devs care less about their users than Iran's government does about its citizens.
webOS will only grow from this point on. Think about it:
* genuine multitasking
* multiple devices planned (slate, multiple phones, etc.)
* a homebrew community that is allowed (not on iPhone)
* a company that cares about its users (not with Android)
* fewer devices than Android with controlled hardware (better because it means updates typically come quicker)
This was a one time fluke. This update has been delayed and delayed some more. This update is bringing very high capabilities, so did you want Palm to rush it? If they rushed it more than they already did, they may have added massive security vulnerabilities instead of accidentally including a bug that causes some apps not to be able to save data
The updates usually come quicker for webOS than for Android and much quicker than for iPhone. webOS is more dev-friendly and it will only get better with time.
Installing on UK O2 Pre now.
One interesting point. Whey you get the screen saying update available but don't have 3G/Wifi connection it says you can download on a lower level (i.e. 2G/EDGE) connection but 'it will stop incoming calls, etc.'
I didn't think this was a problem with GSM phones and assume this is just the text used for US CDMA phones - or does data download block the phone in the UK too?

Downloaded. Disappointing to see only ONE PDK app available for the Pixi (Assassin's Creed Altair's Chronicles HD). Was hoping to download all the games I used to have on my Pre!!!

So you basically switched from beer to light beer and you're complaining because they don't taste the same...Maybe you're not clear on the 'light' concept and what it takes to make it lighter.
Not a fair analogy. The update is supposed to allow 3D gaming on the Pixi, but the only game available seems to cause a TMC error.
I guess it is Pixi user's turn up -- get UberKernel with compache, blah, blah, blah.
I find it amazing that to use a device in the manner intended by its manufacturer and carrier, you have to void the warranty and install a different kernel. Yes it can be done, and I do use it, but what about the other 95% of the Pre users who don't visit here and know nothing about homebrew, etc.?

I don't even know why they continue to roll out 1.4.5 if they know that it has a bug that essentially breaks the new functionality (show-stopper bug?). They're waiting because what's going to be released in the US is going to be 1.4.5.1 in which the bug will be fixed.
Also, you gotta love Americans: when they get 50% off all Apps and Europeans complain because they don't get squat, they get angry and squash all discussion. When they get a largely inconsequential, minor update some time later than Europeans, they get angry and complain about how they're being treated.
But of course, Palm is a good patriotic company using them subhuman euro-creatures as guinea pigs to run experimental software on. If they survive unmaimed, we can give the good people of America the patch. Do you REALLY think it's that, danib62? Or do you think that US carriers - much more meddlesome and politicised than their EU counterparts - have more to pick around? Like disabling GPS in some cases, or disabling WiFi in others? Carriers that don't have to do stuff like that first can release quicker.
So what exactly was in this update then? I guess it was all just bug fixes and laying down the work for gaming etc. but would have been nice to see something new.

Up and running on 1.4.5 on Bell.
So far so good. Saved my patch list in preware, removed my theme, ran EPR and EFV - did the update - reinstalled patches via saved list in preware.
Most of mine worked (at least the important ones), and now my Pre is back to it's pre-update state and working fine. Some apps feel 'snappier' but otherwise not a whole lot of difference that I can see....
Should I doctor before or after installing 1.4.5.?

I feel robbed - finally installed Preware and uberkernel last week and was enjoying my superfast Pre... Downloaded WebOS 1.4.5. (UK user here) Its not compatible with Uberkernel..... ah well, here's to hoping the Amazing guys at WebOSInternals knock out a compatible version soon....
Downloaded the update last night, everything works good before i couldnt run many pdk 3d games like 3 or 4 then to many cards, NOW i just opened up
n.o.v.a, hawx, asphal5, glyder 2, superKOboxing2, WSOP3, monopoly at the same time NICEEEE, they all seem to work normal too, but now when i go to my "Updates" it has all my apps there but when i tap on one, takes me to app catalog page at the bottom bar it just says "tap to launch" when it would normally say "update available"....i wish this would go away! any suggestions, i took the known patches, did save/restore got everything back...
it is normal for it to say "tap to launch." it should only say "update available" when there is an update available. after updating the app it should go back to saying "tap to launch." otherwise, if it constantly says "update available" that is not normal.
