webOS 1.4.5 (mostly) on track, but AT&T users face delay 75
We've previously confirmed that webOS 1.4.5 is imminent and its primary purpose is to clean up how PDK apps (ex. native 3D games) work - basically they will be 'jailed' and no longer able to run roughshod over the entire OS. We also expect that 1.4.5 will finally bring 3D gaming to the Pixi.
That's what we all knew, now an anonymous tipster sends word: carrier testing is nearly finished - one carrier is requesting a small bugfix and another carrier is waiting a bit before accepting it. That 2nd carrier: AT&T. Apparently the idea of releasing a webOS update so soon after launch gives them the willies. Whatever the reason, webOS owners on AT&T are going to have to wait a little while before they're up on the new hotness - a pain point especially for in-the-know Pixi Plus buyers on Big Blue.
The former (unnamed) carrier's bugfix is pushing 1.4.5 back a little bit, so if you were wondering what happened to that "Late May or Early June" timeline that developers heard about exactly one month ago, now you know.
Lastly, this 1.4.5 update looks to be the last before the big push for the next update we heard so much about at Palm's developer day. That update is still slated for the Fall and should bring significant changes to the underpinnings of the OS for speed as well as APIs for the microphone, camera, and much more. Get all the details on that future version of webOS here.
Thanks, Anonymous!

too bad I will have my EVO before any of this takes place. webOS was a swing and a miss.
let me help you out.
www.androidcentral.com
see ya!
Love it ;-)
I've noticed the android community is pretty small and doesn't seem to have the technophiles rampant in here. Certainly considering the number of units sold compared to Palm, a-cental is a comparative ghost town. So espinosa is just looking for validation.
So, here goes:
espinosa,
Sorry didn't know you had a Pre
Sorry you didn't enjoy it.
Sorry you'll be stuck with an android for a year or more
Sorry nobody at androidcentral welcomed you into android nation to help you celebrate your droid purchase and keep you from wandering back into here to see what freshness WebOS enthusiasts can expect
nice, have fun with your new 500 dollar door stop
I guess the iphone does better multitasking huh? The answer is no,I can see we have haters who probably mad because palm don't have new hardware out that they know nothing about in the first place. If palm had the funding Apple and google has which is in the half a billion to billion of dollars range. They would been out with new and better hardware. What does the evo has besides front facing camera? It's still android os! If you put a snap dragon or faster processor in the pre and would it not be better then the evo? I don't know why any of you are members.I think you all are from the iphone side of the globe.
....so if you guys don't like palm anymore, WHY ARE YOU HERE?
Some of us here do like palm, and the things to come. Glad to hear the update is coming soon and bug fixes are being addressed before it is released.
Can't wait for fall! And oh yeah, mine does not have a problem multitasking, nor is it overclocked, just a few preware patch goodness.
Nicely said.
Suck it Apple! :)
i hold it down for palm too i got my pre the sec week it was out dont plan on leaving and i look forward to all the goodness to come but u have to admit it hurts to see all this new hardware come out and we dont even get a c40 leak lik i want to see a picture
yo is so much fighting were all here because we want to see whats new with palm, 1.4.5 is coming out soon being happy that the update is coming if u dont like palm any more its all good you know it new hardware comes out you'll be back

Get the bit.ly app. Shrinks websites, just paste the link on bar, hit button, it shortens the link so it doesn't get broken. Plus the app then automatically copies itself to clipboard, go to post, gesture area tap + v and your done. Takes less than 30 sec and then long links in posts work.
All true, but some people refuse to click on an obfuscated link...
Man... these comments need serious cleanup. NONE of them were related to the update.
sorry.... Well at least they all got deleted..
yes I'm looking forward to an update.... The big update with API is the one I am anxious about though..
Hey Precentral, you should have a ranking system in place so we can vote some people's comments into oblivion.
+1
And a auto-ban for xx days/weeks if the post is short and contains a hint of being first.
I actually had another idea to cut down on "first post" trollers: Have the server hold the first, say, five comments instead of immediately posting them - once it has five queued up, publish them all at the same time, in random order. Then people can start replying to those, if they like, as usual - and carry on with an actual discussion.
Or just publish the article with a comment stating "1st" already present. lol
I agree they will be back, and it's always someone who bad type pre even if the forums topic isn't anything about the pre being a good phone.it can be about taking a pic with your pre and someone will bad type the pre.
Prevolution has begun!!!
great, I have a telcel pre and I'm still at 1.4.0
>_>
I will be enjoying my new HTC Evo while everyone waits for new software. Had to do it...glad I did. LOVE THE EVO!!! I'll miss my Pre, but not the love/hate relationship I had with it!
Yeah until other Android phones start getting the Froyo update while you wait six extra months for yours. Have fun!
you can go ahead leave this site and visit www.androidcentral.com now, then.
peace out!
so will we have to remove all the patches we have installed before this installing this update?
Yes, just like with every update since the beginning of time.
Actually, I may have just lied to you. Why don't you do what people need to learn to do and search the forums. This has been discussed 1.5 million times.
forums.precentral.net
VERY SIMPLE TO DO!
Nope! Search the forums re AUPT and patches. Haven't needed to remove patches for last 2 updates :-)
I still make a list of what I have and delete my patches and kernel anyways to be safe. Last time I tried relying on AUPT my phone acted funny after the update until I deleted and reinstalled my patches...
that's the only thing I don't look forward too.
.... So will this have the support to get flash on webos, or is it the fall update? Also will it have the required code that datavitz ''needs''? I can't remember
1.4.0 laid the groundwork for flash
According to the PreCentral posts, it won't have it, but you never know. Perhaps you should read up on it (hint: type in 1.4.5 into the "Search PreCentral" box at the top)
shoot the Pre had the update to support flash since February and we were supposed to get the Flash beta around that time.. Delay on flash is all on Adobe right now.. There's a couple good YouTube videos out there from Adobe themselves showing off flash on the Pre.
as for Dataviz and docs to go that will probally have to wait a little longer. That's one of those programs if I have been following correctly needs an update to use PDK/SDK combined. Right now it's one or the other... I could be wrong... I'm not a developer.... But been thinking of trying my hand at it.
Adobe is to busy in bed with Google..
Adobe already has mobile flash, they even has it coming out on the next Google update.
This explains why my prediction for a release this past Friday did not come through. Darn bugs.
FYI, my prediction was based partially on Precentral's reporting from an anonymous tipster that 1.4.5 had been released to the carriers a week earlier combined with the flurry of updates for the suite of Emergency Patch applications published by the WebOS Internals group.
The latter always happens days before an update. It's the canary in the coal mine so to speak. Only it ends with a good thing!
Alright! I get excited with updates.
Its great to see updates but we need an updated phone. The Pre has been out for a year, 9 months in the UK and Europe and most other have new phones.
These updates can only make webos better but it does not look good on a phone that falls apart without much help from the user.
Could these updates mean a new phone is on its way or could it be that these updates will fit in with HP and their plans for 'other devices'?
If Palm / HP roll out a new decent phone then all is good but until that does happen i will be using my HTC Desire.
I would imagine that in the app stakes, devs will be waiting to see what HP do when they take over in a few weeks, as will all of us and even if a new phone does roll out will it sell?
even if a new phone does roll out will it sell?
I've been wondering the same thing. Palm had a damaged name because the world passed them by while they were still stuck with PalmOS. WebOS was supposed to make them matter again but I believe the Pre made things worse (unfortunately). I have a hard time understanding why the build quality of the lesser device (Pixi) is so much better than that of the flagship (Pre).
Anyway, I think it will be a real uphill battle for whatever the next device may be (even if it's beefed up). Reputation matters and, unfortunately, Palm has done some damage to theirs. What was supposed to be the second coming, didn't even amount to coming in second.
Here's to hoping the fathers of the smartphone can still bounce back.
I tend to disagree. This business is all about the latest and greatest. If Palm does it right and comes out with a solid form factor with all the latest bells and whistles, I think it will sell well.
How many people in these forums buy phones every year or more? A lot. They always want the best available and aren't brand loyal. Those who do wait out their contract buy the best available (or they can afford) when their contract is up and Palm will get their share of that.
Selling to the people in the forum has never been the issue though. Even the Pre sold extremely well to "forum members". :-) The problem is selling to the world at large and those guys/gals don't buy phones the same way those of us who frequent the forums do.
Yes, Palm will get their share. I'm not saying it won't sell at all. I'm just wondering how "well it will sell". It's pretty hard to come back from a bad rep even with a solid product. Not saying it can't be done...just that it seems like it will be a hard sell to the masses in what will amount to a third chance to comeback (the Pre was supposed to be the second chance).
BTW, I only mention the Pre because it was supposed to be the device that got people to notice webOS (which is really the foundation of Palm's/HPalm's future in the mobile space). But let's face facts, Palm sells devices, not OSes (OSes? Is that a word?) So if they don't plan on licensing webOS, they will still have a hard time (I think) getting people to really notice, buy in and stick with webOS. This is if they do everything right. I don't even want to think what will happen if they make some of the mistakes made this time around.
I don't think the Pre was exposed to enough of the Smartphone market to have a bad name that is irreparable. Some people have had bad experiences, but that is such a small segment of the target market. And it is also typical for the mobile phone market. my son is on his second Hero and my Daughter is on her third Samsung Exclaim in less time than I have had my one Pre. At least Palm has had numerous updates, while those phones have not had one. This technology moves very fast!
I agree that it's probably not irreparable, but it really does have a bad name out there. It also doesn't help having Sprint Store Managers say "the Pre was bad for business due to too many returns." (This happened to me recently). I've also seen people posting here that some carriers are not even bothering with Pre replacements; they simply offer another phone to returnees.
The Pre's return rate is anything but "typical for the mobile phone market." Perhaps you are right about the exposure though. The fact that the Pre was not heavily advertised may, in the end, prove to be a saving grace for webOS.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying I believe it's the end of webOS. Just saying there is some hill climbing to recover from this stumble. I'll be watching to see what happens. Hey, even with Android it took a while for the "army of Android devices" to really come about. :-)
petbul, I agree with your disagreeing ;-).
Especially with Sprint who allows Premier members to upgrade yearly. I don't view those who jumped at the EVO as "defectors", I view them as want to see what HTC, Android, and the EVO has to offer. Upgrade every 12 months. If Android 2.1 and Froyo are truly below webOS AND Palm has a decent hardware release within the next year, they will be back.
To me the biggest problem is that with the mix of carriers, phone brands, and phone types there will NEVER be an apples to apples comparison. I kind of view it like the NFL draft -- many teams pick the "best available player", not just the best available at the position where they need help.
Everyone here needs to get over the "fanboy" stage (both those who say "Hey I'm lovin' my EVO" and those that say "EVO suck it").
Technology advances so much in a year now, it is impossible to have a phone that is on top of the technology heap for a year (much less the standard two year contracts that most carriers have).
hey I'm a Sprint premier person.. I was due for an update as of 3months ago. Still on my Pre... Why?.. Simple..
I'm not a fanboy but then again I'm not a next best thing lack of product loyalty person either.
bottom line is I believe you should get a device best suited for what you use it for. With me the Pre is what I need because I do alot...and I mean alot.. Of multitasking and I need to get it done fast sometimes.
other people are all about using their devices as entertainment outlets.. They are on iphones, some people need security and are nothing but business.. They are on BlackBerrys.. Me I'm a mix of bot worlds so the Pre is best suited for me... Then there's the people that go to Android. They want a device for entertainment but hate the iphone,, they don't like the Pre because lets face it... The Pre is like a iphone and blackberry mixed into one true multitasking device...
Whatever you need a phone for find the one that is best suited for you. If you just go for the latest and greatest sometimes that's not the best for you and you will be disapointed and hate your device for the duration of your contract.... Doesn't mean to go trolling message boards either..
"Doesn't mean to go trolling message boards either.."
Amen to that -- the constant sniping back and forth gets old very quickly.
I agree, use the device that is best for you, leave it to the manufacturers and carriers to do the marketing and sales.
I'm still on my Pre too, however I am getting tired of the TMC errors (yes, on Sprint), if nothing is announced by fall I will probably start looking for my device. As of this second, it appears Palm and Sprint will be parting ways. I will not hold onto my Pre forever just hoping that there is some next new webOS device released on Sprint.
Palm doesn't have a "damaged" name. It has NO name among the newer smartphone initiates. The "older" 30+, 40+ aged people have good memories of their Palm pdas. The Pixi is a simple design with no moving parts- that's why the build is "better." It's like saying why is a rock so stable. Well, nothing moves in a rock. The Pre's design is clever but more complicated and ambitious with its slider. The first versions in sprint were problematic. My verizon Pre + is ok so far and it seems more stable with some minor design changes.
Reputation matters to a point but things change really fast in phone world. Motorola used to be #1 then #2 then sank to zero because of lack of direction and real OS. There was talk of them abandoning the market altogether only 2 years ago and they invented cellphone. Now with android, Motorola's back on the map. If you ask the average motorola droid user, a lot of them have no idea who motorola is and what they've done over the years. They only like the design and know the google name. That's why Palm still has a chance if it gets the hardware, software right and has a advertising budget and some clout with the carriers. The HP name give them the latter - or at least the potential.
I hear most of what you are saying. However the rock example is out of synch. Are you telling me that all of the Pre's build quality issues are due to it having moving parts? The screen cracks, the usb door cracks, really? I can understand the oreo-effect issue, but c'mon.
I hope the HP name helps. But if you think Palm does not have a damaged name in the "newer smartphone initiates" then we can agree to disagree. :-)
Mikey47 I don't get too many TMC errors and I'm on Sprint.. My pre is patched up, themed up, and running uberkernal with Govnah at 800mhz and I rarely get TMC... I get it mainly if I'm running something that likes to cache memory like internet radio or a podcatcher app like dr. Podder.
and before you ask.. Yes I have a whole bunch of apps.. Enough I had to get the add a page patch just to make a separate pages for games, multimedia, productivity, misc. And system tools.
and Taharka I honestly think you have bad luck. Cause the screen cracking issue was pretty much a bad batch of earlier Pre's (i cracked mine falling outside a club in Ybor city at Tampa,,, but convinced Sprint it was one of the faulty ones to get it replaced free..go me) and I have been on 3 palm pre's now. First was the Pandora glitch getting the phone stuck in headphone mode, second was the radio stuck in airplane mode glitch and the 3rd being drunk and breaking the screen... But that last one I tried something and that was using the headphones and taking them out while using all apps that play music and guess what.... When I did that while Pandora was playing I got the phone stuck in headphone mode... Hmmmm interesting.. If anyone needs to do a software update I think Pandora needs to look into why they keep messing up Pre's.
the Palm Pre is basically a beta test phone... Hence the name.. You know Palm has been watching closely to release a good phone... There had to be a good phone in the pipeline and a tablet they were working on that sealed the deal with HP... I don't see HP spending that much money on just an OS when they are in bed fondling Microsoft because of the computer side of their business. And was/is in line for mobile7.
I'm just saying...
I respecfully agree that Palm has an uphill battle ahead. While I have liked having the latest Palm now for the last 10 years, most phone owners are more interested in battery life and reliability and ease of use.
That is where Palm took a 3 strikes-you're-out with the Pre. While I love Synergy, my wife has heard me complaining far too much about the difficulty using the Pre right (speed dial doesn't work when Phone app is forward, for example), the battery dying before the end of the work day, and too easy to answer or hang-up when you didn't mean to, and the mysterious "instant battery drains" occasionally. SHE hates the Pre! It took me months of updates and forum surfing and medical apps to start trickling in to even start to respect it.
The Pixi hardware form factor is basically just the Palm Centro. So less moving parts probably helps reliability in the design.
I really hope that Palm will hit a home run again. I miss the days when I had the premier medical tool in my pocket. Now I carry my old Centro (phone turned off) when at the hospital for my old medical documents and calculators that don't run with Classic on the Pre, and for the 24-hr reliability, as well as my Pre that I have to recharge a couple of times at least in a 24-hour call day at the hospital.
If Palm can nail the device again so it is reliable as a phone, lasts longer than a high schooler's attention span, and attracts medical tool writers (I might try it myself!) then they will certainly get another sale from me. Otherwise, they will just be another lost pioneer left behind in their old wagon when the railroads built through... Android and Iphone.
Here's hoping Palm comes out swinging this fall, and that 1.4.5 will help in the meantime!
buhu my comment was first who was the hater who deleted it... Dear precentral always negativ news and then expecting great comments is para
Jon, Palm has been working on these updates since before the HP buyout was announced, so it has nothing to do with that. Palm has kept the focus on WebOS updates since they know that WebOS is the one thing they have that others just can't beat right now. I suspect that some of the work going on is for adding the touchscreen keyboard, so that Palm can get WebOS on more devices out there.
Picture it, if they can license WebOS to other vendors, the revenue stream would go through the roof if Palm or HP doesn't have another phone in the pipeline by now. A large device with a touchscreen keyboard and WebOS may sell well, and if they have versions with a real keyboard as well, that will really help.
Problem is Android which google gives out free. So the admission fee is lower with an OS that is updated and given out by a powerhouse like Google. (no concerns of instability with that company!) So why would a 2nd tier company pay for WebOS when android has lots of momentum and marketing buzz. The only ones who can resist android are the biggest companies who want to control their own destiny like HP. (which is why HP bought Palm) For other big players who are sitting on the side lines but want to stay in the game like Dell, android is the cheap and quick choice.
Will this fix the GPS issue on Verizon?
where is my comment? it wasn't bad : ( I love my Pre!!! PALM goodness is coming and i am very excited at the news of a update. It got wild last night, people were nuts.
teckiegirl I think they just deleted all comments linked to that one troll that was in here last night.... I admit I was getting a little retarded.. Not being mean but just throwing gas on that fire. And no your comment wasn't bad I remember saying you had a point while I was mesin with the troll..
I still don't believe his persistance..
thank you : ) people like that should be deleted and banned. we are all positive people. we need to stick together and help this platform by sending off good juju : )
juju bees???? Awesome I love those little candies that get stuck in my teeth..lol
I am not a troll lol
I'd love to see performance improvements in the Calendar and font improvements in the browser; zooming in and scrolling leaves text missing lines of pixels. Also a virtual keyboard would be wonderful - we already have virtual number keyboards for dialing and the calculator, so why not for the alphabet too. :)
stodge
almost everything your asking for is in the Homebrew community.. It's safe to go there as Palm supports the homebrew community... Get Preware loaded and go look at patches.. It also makes your device feel like it's custom tailored to you.
I have an on screen keyboard from there and it's nice but only use it once in awhile for quick stuff... Other then that I flip mine open loud and proud.. Lol
Wouldn't it be nice if the carrier that asked for the bugfix delay was Verizon and the bugfix was the GPS issue? Hey, I can dream, can't I? LOL
i don't really care about all that is HP buying Palm. Palm is still screwing the hell out of themselves and all of us... 1.5 features should have been here 6 months ago.....
God damn palm... your poor vision and execution says it all... HP, please do a better and faster job by getting 1.5 to all Palm owners no later than JULY 1.
Devote more resources to get the job finally done. The dumb ass palm team is to ignorant to get anything done properly over the last three years.
lol
How is HP going to get 1.5 to us by July 1st when the buyout doesn't even go through until July 31? Magic?
It CAN be done with one of these: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3YmMNpbFjp0 :-)
before you open mouth and insert your foot you might want to research all the other mobile operating system updates out there..... Palm is the only one that gives their customers updates in a timely manner to keep up with technology..
Palm has issued more updates then iOS, Android, BlackBerry etc etc.. Not because of a lousy OS but to help their customers more with performance updates which I embrace.. Been with WebOS since release day on Sprint and got to watch this OS grow... And grow it has... If there was a way to set your phone to the very first version of WebOS I would say do that then bring it back up to date and tell me I'm wrong how much Palm has put into this OS.. No other company has put this much effort into their OS in the past year... Google was too busy trying to keep up with HTCs phones hitting the market and all their other 2000 projects non phone related, RIM is just RIM, and Apple well Steve never thinks there is a problem with his products even if there is one... the slowest people with their mobile OS is Microsoft... their last update was over a year ago if I'm not mistaken.. and instead of updating they are just making a new mobileOS..
@delete2end
Apple OS 4 features should have been here 2 years ago, ANDROID 2.2 should have been here 6 months ago.
Fact is we get webOS updates as fast or faster than the lesser platforms.
"...basically they will be 'jailed' and no longer able to run roughshod over the entire OS."
Dumb question: Will this help improve the too many cards error issues my Sprint Pre has, especially (but certainly not limited to) with regards to opening a game?
I don't know the answer, but if you utilize Homebrew apps, the solution already exists.
the jailed comment made has to do with PDK.. (Plugin Development Kit) that's what you need to make those awesome 3D games and other cool apps out there... However because WebOS is basically written the same way as a web page.. HTML and Java script there tends to be a security hole there... This is why PDK was only available to companies/people Palm trusted.... For OUR safety and security of our devices.. Until they could figure out how to fix the security hole with PDK. Otherwise people could of wrote apps with backdoors that stole your info and invaded your phone.... Bravo to Palm for watching our butts.. They wanted us to have awesome games,, they teamed up with EA Games and came up with PDK,, they addressed a security issue and limited PDK to trusted vendors until a fix could be come up with..
a true lesser company that was desperate would of let PDK be public then months later pull a Facebook and say.."oops we f'd up...sowwy" so if they need to jail up PDK for security reasons.. So what... Let it be done let the rest of the developers that want to port their apps they released on Apples iphone (you need PDK to port iphone apps to Pre)
I'm rambling... Sorry.. There's more to all of the PDK issue.. Listen to the podcasts and read the articles and you will figure it out.
for homebrew utilizers, are we gonna have to uninstall all of the patches and apps we got through PreWare, including PreWare before we can upgrade the OS?
@guerrillitary, Depends what homebrew you have. Simply if everything was installed through preware normal feeds then yes, except for ofcourse themes. All themes MUST be removed.
If you have any overclocking patch other than uberkernal and govnah then you nedd to remove it for the update.
As I said before if the people that are on this site think that they can bad mouth Palm and the Pre, why want they go to Androidcentral and talk all the mess they want about this phone. It's really ridiculous and childish. This site is for the Palm Pre ethuisiast not for idiots. I love my Palm Pre and I've invest to much time into patching, overclocking, downloading apps, videotaping, taking pictures, multitasking, playing with preware, playing 3D video games, etc to not give up on Palm. WebOS has only begun to show it's true potential. With HP backing them up with the cash flow, I can't wait to see what is coming out. I believe Palm has something out already. They are just tight lip about it.
web os is way better then android i just bought the HTC EVO cool phone and all but the os sucks next to web os. palm just needs new hardware and im back, the wife now has the pre she loves it.So by next summer everyone will be talking hp palm i just hope they have something for Sprint ill never switch as im very happy with them
Aww. I wish I could get this update ASAP, but I can stand waiting. I got my Pre Plus a few days ago, so my excitement will last me long enough until the update. :)
I just hope they fix some of the bugs. I was in an O2 shop in the U.K. the other day on King's Road. None of the sales assistants were impressed with the Palm Pre Plus, and said the Blackberry was better. And that's in the shop that sells it, and you'd imagine they might try and promote it a little. Given sales teams like that I'd say the Pre has at least an uphill struggle in the UK at best, or at worst is dead in the water.
