Off to meet the developers!

I'm guessing Suruat started a *THREAD* as opposed to a *THREAT*. But you never know, sometimes your userbase can be quite demanding: "Tell us more about yourself!!! ...OR ELSE!"

fixed :)

I'm not one to usually correct the postings... But since you're a fellow Portlander Robert I thought I should take the time to point out that you put "threat" instead of "thread" in the section about meeting the developers.

YES VIRTUAL KEYBOARD IS BACK!!!! ITS o so smoooth.

Hey!

Is the author of Terminal aware that the app is broke again? It doesn't even load this time. It just dumps Luna right away. Terminus isn't an option because it hard-locksup my phone. The "hold power and flip mute 3 times" doesn't work. I have to pull the battery.

Just wondering if Terminal is on the list of things to fix again.

Thanx!
M.

Just as a typical Pre user. WebOS 1.4 looks great but it seems to me that the coordination between Palm, Verizon, and the developers could have been smoother. As a user who depends on the phone, I am not happy when apps stop working when there is an OS upgrade. I cannnot tell whose problems these are but I don't really care - please get all apps functioning ASAP.

If you're talking homebrew apps then technically they don't count. Palm may encourage them but they have no responsibility to make sure that they are update compatible

(Blanking dup post. Sorry)

my pre is bricked right now (don't know where that term comes from). Sprint is sending a replacement, & I'm lost without it

I love that thread. I love Palm and their developers.

when is a Ustream app going to come. that would be awesome

Robert, maybe you should also mention that the Rebel SIM used for unlocking british O2 Pres doesn't work fine under webOS 1.4. Many users can't even make a call! See http://forums.precentral.net/gsm-pre/232846-rebel-1-4-not-working.html

STILL NOT AVAILABLE IN CANADA!!! WTF? By the end of February hey Palm? I'm sick of this second rate treatment, sure Palm has launched the phone on a global scale, but they still don't support the phones features on a global scale. No GPS nav, no music store, no app store, zero ability to buy anything unless you pirate the ipk, promises of updates and features by specific time, and then deliver to the rest of the world but not US.

I'm sorry I really really wanted to like Palm, I even convinced a few friends to also buy a pre. But now, I'm done. Luckally I can cancel my Bell contract for $99 due to my plan (wife's work plan) and I am switching to the iPhone. Actually I just might wait until the new iPhone is released this summer, so if Palm or Bell or whoever is to blame can pull their act together by then, then I will consider staying a Palm customer. Until then, I have little choice, the pre is limited in features compared to the iPhone/Android now as it is, throw in neglect for customers and international features and I'm sure I wont be the only person to jump ship.

Sorry palm, I tired.

And like so many other fools, you place the blame in the wrong place. 1.4 is obviously ready. palm did their job and they did it well. It's far more likely that Bell is responsible for your delay, not Palm.

And really, when it comes down to it, is your phone any less god than it was a week ago? Absolutely not. It just hasn't gotten the update yet. But like so many others you have the patience of a petulant child and can't abide the idea of waiting a few extra days to get the latest and greatest of goodies. A one week wait equates to approximately .02% of your life (assuming a life expectancy of 70 years. Clearly an unbearable wait.

As far as being limited compared to the iPhone... keep drinking that spiked Apple Juice, if you drink enough, that woman next to you might actually look hot.

Considering the Pre is still trying to catch up (excluding multitasking) to where the iPhone was last year? Yeah, I'm a little upset my phone is just as functional as it was a week ago.

When the Pre was announced I like many others was very excited, I can get an awesome phone, with touch screen and not jump on the bandwagon that is Apple like everyone else. However, almost a year later and we are still without the ability to buy a single program, how does that encourage developers? or competition? we can't buy an MP3. We can't use Navigation (which could very well be Bell's fault) but my point is the Pre was advertised with a set of features, a set of features that still do not exist to non-Americans.

It should be Palm's responsibility to ensure the companies representing them (including bell) can offer the features and functionality advertised.

Going back to Apple, they do just that. Sure enough not all apps are available internationally, however you DO have the ability to purchase an app, or game, or song, or video if you choose to. You DO have the ability as a developer to create an application and appeal to a global customer base, and most of all with Apple in Canada I DO have the choice to go with Rogers, Telus or Bell. I am not locked down to one company, I can use the features I want, and I can buy (not steal ipk's) to get the applications I want. Video recording has been working for almost a year, GPS capabilities, and when an update hits the world. I CAN DOWNLOAD IT! Imagine that!

Truth is we can compare Apples and oranges all day, but when it comes to the end product in the customers hand, Apple doe's have their shit together. Call the women next to you ugly if you want, if she looks pretty, acts pretty, and you believe she's pretty then ignorance is bliss my friend.

At the end of the day, customers want to use the tools they have advertised and available to them. I wanted Palm to be my phone of choice, with its open source mentality and home brew support I thought i would love it, and I did, so I waited and waited and I'm still waiting for some basic functionality. ie. Video, Voice recognition, visual voice mail, etc. Sure I can blame Bell for the late updates or lack of GPS support, but when Mr. Joe User walks into a store looking for a smart phone, he has already herd about the blackberry and iPhone. It is up to Palm to make it's name just as popular and appeal to that customer, Mr Joe User wants something that will just work that he doesn't have to mess with. Unfortunately Apple is playing that game better than anyone right now, and I would love nothing more than to see Palm do the same, they are giving it a good go in the US. But while they do that they are loosing global customers.

Basically what I'm trying to say is if Palm wants to play with the big boys? Than it needs to bring it big boys toys. As an open source enthusiast I want to like WebOS & Android but as a user, I need my phone to work and have the features I need. With Android being very limited here and Apple available on all networks, I like many others will be forced to switch, and that is what hurts Palm at the end of the day.

1 of the many reasons its great to be an AMERICAN lol

man canadians bitch alot, it's bell not palm...

I wouldn't expect an American to understand anyway, when your that high on your horse it's easy to look down at the rest of the world. Until you need something of course, like oil.

I'm trying to provide a big picture view of the problem Palm has from an international standpoint, with or without bell. But like I said, I wouldn't expect an American to understand a problem they don't have to deal up with. After all isn't America known for it's ignorance to the rest of the world? or are you ignorant to that fact too?

My initial post was not about the delay in the firmware update, although I do understand how it could be taken that way. It was about Palm (not bell) saying one thing, and providing something much less to international customers. To U.S. customers the only case in point I can think of off the top of my head is iTunes support. They did not hesitate to advertise iTunes functionality in the beginning, and although Apple may have killed the ability for Palm to do this. Palm should have never of advertised a hacked capability knowing full well they were not authorised to perform such a function, and it would be removed or at best turned into a game of cat and mouse over time.

Dear America's Hat,

I can record video on my Pre. It was within the time Palm said it would be here not within a rumored date. Besides CES was in America, I'm sure they were talking to us, not you.

- The U.S. Americans

Hey good point! It is all about the U.S. further proving my previous complaints.

But you see in a world of choices, the better product wins. This is why Apple is currently leading the pack and offering things on a global scale, and why Palm's stocks just dropped 19%.

America, Canada, or any other part of the world doesn't really matter, they are ALL customers with choice, and as someone who was a supporter of Palm. I feel I have made a wrong choice by going with palm, yes that is just one opinion. BUT I'm not the only one, so as someone who would like to see Palm doing better in the future. I simply posted MY views as to why I am switching.

Once again though, I really don't expect you to understand. It's not your fault, I would expect nothing less than arrogant sarcastic remarks from you.

Oh by the way, CES was in the U.S. yes, but it was international companies that made it what it is, and it was their products that were sold on an international scale. If it wasn't intended for me, than why was it advertised to me, why was it sold to me, and why was it offered in my country? They had no problem taking my money, so one could only assume I was part of their marketing target.

Regardless I'm not even sure why I'm still arguing, I tried to support a small company based on their promises, and I got burned. It's community is defending it, which is fine but unless ANY company who plans to compete on a global scale, CAN compete on a global scale than it's better off for them to stick within their means. Thankfully I have choice, and I have made mine.

Money talks, and yes, even louder than American mouths. In 5 years I would like to see Palm on top, but at this rate, they simply wont be.

Perhaps you should take up your 1.4 delay complaint with your carrier. Your carrier, not Palm, shafted you.

dduuhh its cuz u got dat lame ass bell for your carrier. Seriously?? I didn't even know bell was still around. I mean who goes out and get bell for their mobile carrier???

I had some technical problems after the update but my now my phone is running smoothly. I have my theme & a few patches installed.

Palm Pre + Ipod Touch = perfect combo

I totally agree I have my pre and iTouch with me all the time its the best of both worlds.

ha ha I knew there was someone out there that would agree. Yes they go perfectly together

apple sucks! May to much money for a mp3 player.... And it will break within two years... If your gona spend that much money why don't you get a zune hd? I tunes sucks too! Linux is they way to go!

after the update these are some of the problems i have found:
i get the too many card message when i only have open like 2 cards not to mentione when i have need for speed

appscoop as many other apps are nat working smootly as they used to specially slacker most of the time is shutting down ,not playing songs and i noticed it takes longer to connect to the internet

i love the video feature but seriusly at what cost

i think am gonna wait for the next webos device coming to sprint hope soon and hope it will be better then the sprint version

Nice to know we can always count on finding a troll under whatever bridge gets crossed...

I'm sick of this guy, he prolly doesn't have a pre or a pixy... And he prolly got 1.5 when we got 1.4...lol

Someone should do a video comparison of 1.3.5 and the new 1.4 to show the performance enhancements...

WE got the webOS 1.4 and YOU won the gold in hockey.. I think thats a fair trade =)

Does anyone know how to save a video to your phone from a SMS? With a photo you just tapped it and it asked to save to photos, but with the video? Help

On a positive note, I went to Verizon on Sunday to get a second touchstone for work and the Palm display was right in front of the door. You could not walk in without seeing the Palm Pre and Pixi. And, the sales girl was talking to me about how great the phones are and actually knew things about them. As I was leaving, there were two sales people showing Palm phones to customers. This is a smaller market, so maybe things are turning around at Verizon for Palm.
