webOS 2.0 getting rolled out in UK on December 6th? 83
We were a little concerned that Jon Rubinstein's promise that Palm would ship webOS 2.0 this year would be fulfilled not by sending out the update to current devices but instead by shipping the Palm Pre 2 on SFR. Thankfully, that concern looks to be allayed - at least in the UK. A tipster sent in the above internal screenshot pegging December 6th as the planned rollout date for webOS 2.0 for the Pre, Pre Plus, and Pixi Plus on O2 UK.
Lately, European carriers have seemed to be a little more aggressive in pushing out webOS updates than they US brethren, so we can't assume that we'll see the update hit these shores in the same period. But hope springs eternal.

I am really looking forward to this update. It will make my Pre look that much better seeing the Stacks of apps opened.
Is it my assumption that Custom themes will not be hindered to this update? I dont think it is but thought I would get more thoughts.
sooo when is it coming to nj?
After They Make Another NJ Reality Show About It
haha if only... i boycotted that show. im so glad its winter and those clowns arnt around here anymore.
Yay..............................*yawn*
Geez... I use to be someone who would never get impatient... i could go to a restaurant wait 35 minutes for my food , have the mess it up, re wait for it again... and not complain once... the palm pre has changed my opinion on patience.
Great! It will be on Verizon by Feb next year. I bet since the processors are different one cant simply take webOS 2.0 from Verizon Pre-2 (when it comes out, hopefully soon)and slap it on verizon pre plus. Any ideas? Plus this means palm has to maintain webOS updates for pre, pre-2, palmpad and newer palm products with OMAP 4's. That is lot of work!
webOS Internals and crew is working on putting webOS 2.0 from the SFR Pre 2 onto current 1.4.5 devices. There was a forum thread about it until somebody decided to do something really stupid and jeopardize our whole community.
wow, I just read that thread... perma-ban for that guy!
Just my luck. This means Sprint won't give us the update until the middle of next year. I think Sprint should change their name from "The Now Network" to the "Whenever The Hell We Get Around To It Network". Or the "We Will Get To You After We Get Done With The Android, Now Shut The Hell Up Network".
Does anyone know how well WebOS 2.0 will run on an orginal Pre as I am looknig forward to getting this update but dont want it to slowe things down.
This will hopefully keep me happy until a nice new phone comes out in the new year.
as long as you overclock it im sure it will b fine. i bet they will have a new oc kernel out for 2.0 within a week or 2
surely you mean that you DON'T overclock it you should be fine until a new kernal arrives
It should be faster due to improvements in database access speed and hardware acceleration for the GUI. I think the only thing that will get slower is moving cards around because the stacks interface adds pauses here and there when sliding a card.
I'll let you know on the 6th Dec!
Moving from java services to C should improve performance over what you have now, probably. I certainly wouldn't expect it to get slower.
"than they US brethern" huh? I thoight the possesive of they is their. O well.:)
I'm not going to jump on your typos but yeah. They should most likely be their, possibly thy since it looks like he is using biblical context but that wouldn't work as it would be second person instead of third person.
Just a thought...is it possible that HP wants to put more effort into establishing webOS in Europe before making a giant push in the US?
Sure. Why not.
Why would they want to do that? No one in Europe has even heard of or cares about WebOS. The market share over there is likely to be 0.000000001 percent. WTF Palm??
Your math equates to about .8 people. This is an impossibility and obviously not correct given the pre/plus sales in Europe. Your argument is invalid. QED
Nope, it is quite right. Since that 1 person's Pre GPS does not work, this is counted at 0.8 of a phone. Therefore math is correct. QED.
I totally LOLed this comment. For almost a full minute! :)
Ah, touche. You, sir, win one free internets.
Gotta love Math... To funny
That is just not correct. Ever wonder why SFR picked up the Pre 2 when AT&T and Sprint didn't?
Presently, HP/Palm webOS devices are not officially sold by HP/Palm in Switzerland.
However, we have a company, importing Palm devices from Germany into Switzerland. I guess, they get it from O2 Germany. Initially they offered the Palm Pre, but soon after availability also the Palm Pre Plus and the Pixi Plus.
Talking to the product manager in charge, he told me that they have got very limited allocation for those devices.
After a new delivery, the stock shows 10+ devices for a short while, then counting down, soon to be followed with an out of stock note. But carries the remark, that 10+ are on order.
Since their highest stock info is 10+, I don't know the actual shipping counts. Could be 20, 50, ...? units. Who knows.
Always keeping an eye on their store to discover any new Palm devices or accessories, I realized the following:
a) Palm Pre Plus seems to be a good runner. In the past, this device was more often being reordered and temporary out of stock.
b) Now, the price of the Palm Pre Plus has been lowered substantially ! And stock is at 10+. Could be an indication that they got higher allocations and a new device is on the near horizon. :-)
Really would love to get the Pre2.
That's kind of what I thought was going on as well. We'll see. As long as I can get webOS 2 on my Pre, I can wait some more, I suppose...
I'm no expert, but my thought was that HP may be thinking that Android and Apple are way too big of monsters in the U.S. and that they just need to get a foothold somewhere...anywhere.
The whole SFR thing and this leak got my brain hamster heading in that direction.
Hmm, the iPhone pretty much dominates in the UK. i do think that HP really needs to push the Pre/WebOS over here though. If there were more UK orientated apps (iPlayer, SkyTV, etc) it might make a big difference. I have a Pre and an iPhone(from work) and obviously WebOS is much better to use but there is just so much more available for iphone - shop apps, bank apps, google apps, TV apps, sports apps. Can't HP encourage companys to make apps for them? Can they do that? I don't know.
+1
iphone doesnt dominate in germany but grows stronger steadily. Now that its no longer t-mobile exclusive, the rate will increase. Soon its christmas...
I having a hard time understanding why people are so pumped about the update for the PALM PRE. Really? Not only do I want to chuck this crappy piece of hardware out the window, installing WebOS 2.0 would possibly be the last thing I would want to do to "enhance" this device. I cannot get anymore of these pieces, due to Asurion, and my last stress fractured Pre is on it's last leg. Sprint, I don't like you. Been waiting for something for over 2 years. Dislike.
And we have a hard time understanding why are you even posting this.
Damn it why the hell did I respond?
1. We post because we want someone to care what we have to say when in reality we know that no one cares.
2. We respond to certain post because we want people to know we dont care and to help them have reality that no one cares.
3. We also sometimes find ourselves responding due to #2 and then question ourselves in the same post.
One thing is for certain...
We care to let others know we dont care LOL
We have heard of the "Circle of Life" well this is the "Line of Forums"
You've had your Pre for 2 years? Can I borrow your Delorean? I have my own fissile materials.
I've had about 10 Pre's in the last 2 years. Listen I want new HP/Palm hardware and WebOS 2.0 to come out and prevail, all I am saying is that the Palm Pre was a good device for about a month, two+ years ago. But look at me, I still have one, that is barely breathing. But i am not ranting and raving about how 2.0 is going to save my Pre. I am at a loss and want to stay with HP/Palm/Sprint, but they are not making this easy.
I'm surprised no one has tried to hack the adobe flash plugin out of the 2.0 webos doctor yet for the rest of us.. You'd think it could be done!
Tried and didn't work...
http://forums.precentral.net/search.php?searchid=14773386
Bummer! :(
Who does really want/need adobe flash on a smartphone?
While I am not a big fan of the fruit company at all, I support their decision, to ban it on smartphones.
Get HTML5 up an running on all those (mobile) devices and go on with the life.
Flash was fine for desktops during the last decade.
But this is over now.
Well that sucks. Europe gets the Pre 2 and the Update, FIRST? To heck with the good ole US of A installed base who put the Pre on the map in the first place. Screw us. Let's give it to Europe first. This is crap if they get it before us. The two Palm Fanboys who are left, won't have a problem waiting though....
Is everyone that stupid?
You do realize this is only a rumor that the UK will get 2.0 on December 6. It doesn't say when the US is getting it, so you can't complain.
Remember, this is a RUMOR. That, for all you know, could be a manufactured screenshot.
Additionally, until we see something solid come from a carrier or Palm, don't bother assuming anyone will get it before anyone else.
Wait a minute....There are OTHER places outside America?.....Well, they can't be as deserving as us...
If I did understand it right:
Yep I will have jumped ship by then. I was eligible for an upgrade on Sprint in June and held out to wait for the new devices and features described by Palm in relation to this article: http://www.precentral.net/webos-get-mic-camera-api-faster-services-plent...
But alas nothing has come true. Development of WebOS has been hindered by Palm's money problems and buyout by HP. Good chance I will be on Android soon (what other options does Sprint have?). The good thing about Sprint is I can get a new phone in a year...so maybe I will be back - who knows? Maybe we will have Flash by then (which was promised in spring of 2010).
Palm/HP needs to get going on development and marketing themselves - now that they do not have the money issues they should be able to get this working better, but my original Pre is starting to look pretty ragged (this is my fourth one) and I think I need to move on for a while. i was really hoping 2.0 would be available before this, but I was let down again and besides who knows when Sprint will get new hardware. Us original Pre owners have been stuck for about a year and a half without a light at the end of the tunnel. So much for appreciating the early adopters.

Flash is coming with webOS 2.0. All signs point to Sprint getting the new phone(s) that Palm is almost certain to announce at CES in January. There is light at the end of the tunnel if you look a little harder.
o rly? Can you show me these signs please?
Well, keep in mind that I said "signs", but I didn't say who wrote on the signs, meaning that I think the evidence is credible but it's by no means absolutely certain. One example of information on which I based my statement is here:
http://bit.ly/btjxLI
Sprint might get the NEW HP/Palm smartphone, possibly announced at CES.
But dropping the only webOS device just a few weeks before? Having NO webOS device at all to offer! THAT is a decision I have difficulty to understand.
I know the original Palm Pre is outdated. But already that much, that it doesn't matter to carry it a few more weeks.
Maybe Sprint ran out of new ones and simply have nothing to offer at the moment?
Awesome. My Pre+ and I will be waiting.
Hopefully they're already working on 2.1 as well.
webOS 2.0.1 has already been spotted in application access logs.
I wouldn't count your chickens before they hatch Dieter. The picture above is not a FULL SCREENSHOT. All you see is "Web OS 2.0" (spelled incorrectly mind you). What you do not see is to the left.
This could be a screen shot of the fact that the Pre 2 will rollout in the UK on Dec 6, rather than an OS update. Why would you see the two lines immediately preceding this with Eclair and FroYo both being Dec 6 as well. Would only make sense that this is what version of and OS is shipping on which product and not an OTA update schedule.
If the listing is for what OS will be shipping on new devices, then why would it say "update" after the Android entries? Not all Android devices are on the same update schedule. I think Dieter's conclusion here is correct.
Very true, but you could also argue, why do the Android entries say "update" yet the webOS 2.0 does not?
All in all, if this is all the "evidence" had I don't think any conclusion can be drawn...
Maybe so, but it's fun to guess what's going to happen!
While I completely agree, I must point out that it says that Eclair and Froyo will be out on Nov 15.
Of course, the question to ask is why two updates in one day? Simple: different manufacturers update the OS at different time intervals.
It is possible, though nobody really knows.
This doesn't necessarily mean the UK is getting it first. Two more days til the rumored release of the Pre 2 on Verizon. We cant keep guessing on when we are getting the update when we don't even know when exactly the Pre 2 will be released. So lets stop assuming.
If the schedule's like 1.4.5, Bell shouldn't be too far behind...
Hoping Sprint would give us the pre 2 its what i wanted a fimiliar look with lots of enhancements...i still have my first pre and am ready for a full upgrade...i only have a little over a gig left and no i don't have anything that i can part with(delete) on my phone was looking forward to the storage upgrade and more power....your killing me sprint i gave you 11 years and i have 3 lines on my account...just give us the Pre 2 and i will be a Lifer....call me sprint i know you have my number :( :(
as for the WebOs 2.0 release it NOW!!!! throw me a bone!!!!

Why are some people in this forum think they are intitled to being first. Just because the UK is getting all the glory with Pre2 and WebOS 2.0 it seems the US WebOS base is not liking this. I think HP is doing this correctly by pushing WebOS overseas due to the fact that Palm messed up big time with the US launch. Let HP launch over there, get bugs worked out of WebOS 2.0, get UK hooked on WebOS then hit the whole world with Webos @ CES 2011. You guys who say or do defect to other platforms will break your wallets to get back to WebOS ........and love it. IMO........I'm gonna wait to be upset until CES. If I'm not impressed then...then I'm out searching for another phone and platform.
I'm with you man, but I really don't want to wait until CES to get webOS 2.0 on my phone...
webOS 2.0 was announced for this year by O2 Germany via Twitter too!
a sprint sales man asked me what phone I had I said the palm pre and he said that sucks so I couse him out lol no one messes with my pre
I bet that's a typo and the real date is supposed to be 12/6/11 (June 12) :)
Nah, Europeans are just a very backwards people. That's why they write their dates backwards.
That also explains why HP dumped the Pre 2 and WebOS 2 to Europeans first.
Actuall, Europeans write dates straight forward, rising from small (DAY) to big (YEAR):
DAY.MONTH.YEAR
not such a mix as in the USA:
MONTH.DAY.YEAR
I would use a proper rising date (DAY-MONTH-YEAR) for dates on letters or alike. Or a proper descending date (YEAR-MONTH-DAY) for file/date sorting.
The weird US mix is just fine for sorting birthdays within a year.
But hey, if you need that mix to be happy, go for it. ;-)
I don't get it. One of Hp's HQ is in the states and they don't tell us when webOS V2 and the pre 2 is coming to the U.S. But yet they have very little problems telling when it's coming to the U.K. That's how you can tell that the update and pre 2 coming to the U.S isn't coming anytime soon. It'd make sense to say coming weeks instead of "coming months". They actually mean "coming years"
What you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.
This article is about a supposedly leaked screenshot, supposedly from the UK. There has been no official announcement about when webOS 2.0 is going to hit ANYWHERE. There has been no announcement that webOS 2.0 will arrive in the US later than in other countries. All we have is a possible date when it might arrive in the UK. Maybe it will arrive in the US tomorrow. We have no idea!
