webOS 3.0.2 update to roll out this morning! 170
HP may have missed their promised “by the end of the month” deadline for the HP TouchPad webOS update, but according to HP Vice President of Worldwide Developer Relations (for webOS) Richard Kerris, they’re not going to miss it by much. In response to numerous tweets from the public, Kerris announced on Twitter that the update is “in the pipeline” and will be “starting to roll out this morning.”
The update to webOS 3.0.2 will bring a number of bug fixes and small enhancements and tweaks and is also expected to include Calculator and Clock apps. So join us as we sit here and mash the refresh button under System Updates, searching desperately for the first update to webOS 3.0.

Wohoo! 1st poster.
No update yet though!
HPalm to date has ALWAYS missed their promises.
Are you going to do a little dance if the update doesn't actually roll out today?
No. I don't care about the revision 1 Touchpad, but these are the same people in charge of the webos phones we are all eagerly waiting for.
So this is HPs chance to set an example for how they handle bugs and disappointing reviews, from everything i've been reading so far.. it's seems like HP is letting everyone down.
So releasing the update on the morning of 8/1 instead of before midnight on 7/31 is MASSIVE FAIL?!
No.
Not at all! How did you conclude that from my statement? Releasing a day after promised would be a huge step towards the right direction for HPalm.
I think focusing on a tablet over a phone first is a massive fail.
I think releasing a tablet at the same price as other way more popular/sleek tablets is a fail.
I think releasing a tiny phone no one wants is a fail.
I think telling us we will have flash on our Pre back in Feb 2010 and still not having it today is a fail.
I think HP not being vocal enough on what's going on now with the pre 3 is a fail. (It's because of this a lot of Sprint users have left WebOS and switch to android)
Thats why I switched! Hard to believe purple stol make excuses for hp!
Guys. You know news travels fast. But the update doesn't. I'd wait a bit before expecting it to update on each device. Let's all chill for a bit. I'm gonna try again in the morning. It's a waste of time to hit the refresh button over and over. :)
No, it's just them breaking another promise again.
Sweet! Should be ready by the time I'm off work!
yeah have to wait until i get home too.
presudent?
whats is that?
;)
he's the guy the vice presudent reports to :)
After that it is the Speaker of the Huse. (But realize that the Speaker is Beats compliant.)
Then comes Assistant *to* the Regional Manager.
Seriously curious if any reviewers will be taking the time to do a detailed walkthrough and re-review of this OTA. That's what HP was shooting for.
Well, if the primary purpose of a review is to give a device and platform every chance for a good review and a fair shot a the market, then they will.
However, the primary purpose of most reviews is to offer something interesting to the average reader. I can't imagine a comprehensive review of an OTA update would be of interest to any audience except, say, this one. After all, if you are targeting the population of webOS users among technology readers then you are still talking about 2-3% of your audience.
Update - Well, Nilay Patel seems to still be interested in the TP because they did a blog post on the Kerris tweet on This is My Next. Last week he called the Pre 3 "a disaster" on the podcast but I guess there is still plenty of interest in the TP as a platform. I imagine we will at least see a paragraph or so when the update is released.
Was he calling the Pre3 a disaster or its launch (or lack thereof) a disaster?
Well they're both disasters.
Have you used a Pre 3? I have and it is surprisingly solid, thin, and light - even with a larger screen than the PREdecessors. It is, however, just an iterative update rather than a new design.
Iterative update over a disaster... so it is a mild disaster then?
Why should reviewers give it a try? It won't turn the Touchpad in an iPad, so they won't be satisfied.
Rules for a review that the public will like:
- NEVER compare things the iPad can't do that the competition CAN.
- Highlight the few things that the iPad does better.
- Apps, apps, apps, apps...
- Never mention multitasking.
So, a fair review in your eyes would be to de-emphasize the "few" things iPad does better, not mention apps (you know...what the tablet is for?), but yet stress multitasking between said apps, which of course...are not important.
That seems fair.
If you're still hung up on apps then you don't yet understand what makes the TouchPad unique: Synergy. The entire OS is centered around it. It's purpose is to make you more productive, not just to be the launching place of apps (which it does, too, btw, and very well).
Yes, it will be nice to see the App Catalog grow. Personally I'm looking forward to a Netflix and Nook app, although I feel like I'm going to be waiting for quite a while. But really, if all I wanted was an app launcher I would have bought an iPad or one of the numerous Android tablets.
Anyone should be hung up on apps if they're going to spend hundreds on a tablet. Otherwise, it's just a mobile web browser/email/calendar machine that you paid way too much for when ultraportable laptops that do the same with fuller-featured programs (and do waaaaay more) are $350-400 these days.
I find it baffling here that people consider workflow (which is what the WebOS UI and Synergy are all about) to be only thing that matters to productivity. If you cannot access a service or run an app or run a game or get the streaming video or audio you want because it's not available on WebOS, "just type"-ing until the end of time won't help you. Dedicated apps that save you pinching and scrolling, logging in, and clicks with an optimized UI ALSO make you much more productive.
. . . on the other hand, the fact that the TP supports Flash means that lots of things the iPad needs to have apps for work just fine in the browser.
I agree that apps are important, but I'd rather not have an app for all the stuff that's already out there and perfectly functional with Flash. It's a more elegant solution, I think.
Do you seriously think people buy iPads because they are in love with, say, the iOS app for Usa Today or eBay? Is there a Words With Friends flash site? Or a Tiny Wings one? Or a Hipstamatic one? Or a Garageband one? Or a Grand Theft Auto Chinatown Wars one? Is there even a Netflix Flash website?
Beyond that ridiculous assertion, lots of sites that are Flash-heavy also have alternative iOS-friendly versions that come up when the mobile Safari user agent is detected. Oh, and Apple also allows Skyfire, iSwifter and other browsers that DO render flash in the App Store as a last resort.
No leg to stand on here, sir.
"...ultraportable laptops that do the same with fuller-featured programs (and do waaaaay more)..."
That's just not a valid argument anymore, is it? When the iPhone was first released it couldn't even send an MMS. Or shoot video. No live TV. No OTA updates. Couldn't download music unless your were on wifi. No GPS. Stuck on slow **** Edge network with ATT. No subsidized pricing... Most smart phones at the time, nay ALL smart phones out at the time blew the iPhone the damn **** away on specs and price, but in the end that's not what mattered, right? Same argument with the iPad, the list of devices that do more for less would cover several pages. It's not about "this" compared to "that". It's about what "this" does and how well it does it.
But if you insist on making comparisons then here is my argument: People use the number of apps as the ultimate trump card for the "TouchPad vs iPad" debate to which I say they completely miss the point. The ultimate trump card is *webOS*, something which Apple is not anywhere close to.
Your argument is pretty shaky. What the iPhone lacked at launch was offset by its mobile class-leading Web browsing, media playing, and hardware design and build quality. That's what people bought it for in 2007. not GPS, 3G internet, or whatever else it was missing. Apple didn't even promise an App Store or dedicated apps at all besides "web apps".
Your "ultimate trump card" is a tautology. If WebOS is the determining factor for a buyer, then their choice is no more reflective of the quality of any individual product than the Apple logo is for a Steve Jobs acolyte. In either case, it's prejudice which no competitor can or should match.
App quality and quantity, however, ARE objective metrics which any platform can and should aim to excel in. Buyers respond to the platforms that take most seriously. Those who think WebOS is the "ultimate" whatever will buy ANY WebOS product that boots up regardless of the quality of Apple, Google, or Microsoft's offerings.
Before all these services came out with apps... what was everyone doing? Besides the web browser, email, and calendar, I bet one of the other things they were doing was gaming, that's it. Right before the whole smartphone boom regular computers were already starting to de-emphasize applications in favor of web apps (the whole web2.0 craze). People were doing Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, etc.
Now, you have to pay to get apps for most of those services.
2 Years Ago - We are using standard web technology (HTML/CSS/Javascript) and there are thousands of developers with this skillset; there will be a flood of appss.
Then - When we're out of beta, the floodgates will open.
Later - It's not quantity, it's quality
Shortly After - Brighthouse Labs
Earlier This Year - There will be TENS OF THOUSANDS of apps
Present - Meh, we've got flash and synergy. Who needs apps?
"This is where I've kicked the ball, please move the goal post accordingly."
While as a fan I'd like to see reviews updated, as a consumer, I'd say it's too late! I'm a little concerned with how society has decided it's ok for companies to release incomplete products with promises of "upcoming updates" which will "fix everything". Why would I want to pay top dollar for an incomplete product... to be a paying beta tester?!
Could you image this philosophy in other areas?
- Car breaks: Don't worry, we'll give you an update soon that will make them actually stop your car in the future! Until then, try out the third-party e-break...
- Toilet: Soon you will be able to flush your waste products (here's a free mask as a "Thank you" for being an early adopter though!)
- Refrigerator: Sorry, we decided your fridge's compressor isn't sufficient to keep your food cold. We'll release a new one in the coming months that uses a foreign plug. In the meantime, here's a coupon for a free lint trap for when you buy our new dryer (to be released in the coming months as well).
- Etch A Sketch: You mean you wanted to draw on this instead of just view it?!
This is why I brought my Touchpad to work today. Woo!
I was going to but I was running late and feeling generally crappy this morning. When I am not with it, no need to bring the $600 device with me when I didn't have a real need for it today.
I get thumbs down for being tired and running late?
dude, i'd quit right now if i were you...might get thumbs down for complaining about getting thumbs down ;).
You're definitely getting thumbs down for that.
LOL, that's why I couldn't help but to say something =)
Well, we know you didn't buy it to actually do any work on...
LOL
YES.
Checking for updates...
Your device is up to date.
Checking for updates...
Your device is up to date.
Lather, rinse, repeat...
In Germany it is already afternoon ;-)
Because he was obiviously talking about Germany when he said this morning.
you guys are from the future?
In Russia, TouchPad updates you!
DOH!
Figures they wait until work time...company won't allow non-expensed assets on the WiFi so now gota wait until after work to update...
I liked with Sprint on the Pre- that the updates always fell on a nice Sunday, and new phones came out too....whats with this HP Monday **** !?
Should release updates on Sunday morning, then by the time Monday comes all will have it and if something is broken they can starting fixing it Mon-Fri. Makes perfect sense, no?
I thought 1.3.1 came out on a friday night. i remember some nut from this post actually driving by palm and telling us all the lights are still on. lol
I know some updates came out on week days, because I remember either getting up and reading about an update on the front page, or B going home from work and removing theme and patches to update both phones.
B/c nobody at HP works over the weekend.
Man, I can't wait to get home :)
Woohoo! I can hear the 10's of people who own a touchpad screaming in delight from here!
hahaha.
Any word on whether patches installed will need to be uninstalled before updating. I don't want to brick the touchpad.
http://forums.precentral.net/hp-touchpad-tips-information-resources/2895...
Me thinks @myDrpC and @joshuatopolsky need to each send a tweet to @richardkerris asking "When can we expect to see the Pre 3 available to purchase in the USA?" They seem to have influence!
Doesn't matter, they'll get the same "in the coming weeks/months/years/eons/age of the universe".
Excuse me , the VEER update is so far ?
Yes, it tickles me that Kerris, big VP of the #1 retailer of PCs, uses a Mac.... :)
He's thinking beyond.
it seems the developer relations arm of HPwebOS is infected by apple users.
i think most of the big wigs came from apple.
Before HP bought Palm, the company was mostly full of Mac users. Apparently once HP took over, most had to switch to HP PC's, but it took some time. It makes sense to think that some of these people had Macs at their home before joining the HP team.
Then you don't know HP well. HP could give everyone new through acquisition a new HP computer when they start but they don't. The company is incredibly frugal and will keep them on the non-HP machine until it breathes it's final breath. The only exception to this rule are customer facing employees.
The update will probably come when the guy who works on the west coast comes into the office 45 minutes late and decides to flip the switch.. so 8:45 there.. 11:45 here.
He actually might want to take a **** . so add 10 more minutes.
I am actually more interested in a Veer update. I want my SMS messages on my Touchpad now.
do we even know if the carriers got that update in testing?
I guess it is a longer **** than normal.
Still waiting..
Hey, who needs the webOS update?
Not James Kendrick from ZDnet, who vilified the TouchPad at launch. He has changed his tune, and now after 30 days of intensive use of his TouchPad, is now fully endorsing it over ALL Android Honeycomb tablets.
Read is straight from his pen, err TouchPad virtual Keyboard.
http://www.zdnet.com/blog/mobile-news/hp-touchpad-still-better-than-hone...
He was paid off
You're joking, right?
Yes.
Thanks for picking up my sarcasm.
Or am I joking?
I'm ok with that. HP finally learning to use their "scale". Maybe next time they'll pay them off BEFORE initial reviews :)
To me at least he seems to be enjoying the Touchpad, and the app I let him beta-test.
"So join us as we sit here and mash the refresh button under System Updates, searching desperately for the first update to webOS 3.0."
Now that was funny! Spit out my coffee and made me last to work funny:-)
Ok first off, hp still may be dropping the ball in a lot of areas. Namely letting the playbook show off multi tasking and the new commercial now shows it tethered to your phone, something that webOS is awesome at doing on my veer.
But its making good on every single promise so far. something palm never did.
so far we got
veer in sprint - bought my veer in spring
touchpad in june/july - spot on
update coming enc of month - heck its here!
HP keep up with the promise fulfilling like you are doing!
But please show the touchpad tethered to a phone in the commercial.
Oh yeah and if you wanna really whammy em make the touchpads bluetooth work on all phones not just webOS.
Imagine a selling poing, tether any phone to our device, make the text messages able to import from android as well.
Ok sorry for the ramlbing.. running home now on lunch to install!
What about patches?
Aren't you forgetting the myriad of promises they didn't fulfill?
I mean, they should be commended for getting this OTA out, even if it's technically late. But let's not rewrite history.
rich k. is using twitter for mac instead of an HP(Envy beats) product (sell out)
Ha! via Twitter for MAC! Even people who work for HP use Macs!
I bet R. Kerris uses an iphone and ipad too.
R. Kerris is useless.
Cool story bro!
I'm trying to figure out why when he says "end of the month", it really means the beginning of the next month but when he says "this morning" it definitely means this morning.
They still have about 5 hours left before its afternoon in China.
It's morning in America, dontchaknow?
YAWN
Double YAWN!!
This is just sad. I don't own a Touchpad, but to see them fail over and over again... not able to learn anything.
well I guess It's all about the details... he said it STARTS to roll out this morning. But when will it end? It might take forever...?
In indian speaking... I hope it comes out "Today Morning"
If you are in IT.. you get that joke. lol
Please do the needful sir and revert on the same! lol.
That's just wrong! Funny though. But wrong! lol
i would see a Veer update too , but i think it's impossible today
Sweet!! I JUST got back from receiving the TP on my front doorstep, and then I saw this post! But alas, will have to wait 'til after work to play with it...
I'm still waiting for Verizon 2.1.0 update...
lol. I'm still waiting for 1.4.5.1
I'm hopeful that the update will address most, if not all, of the issues highlighted over the past month or so. My only question is does anyone know how Preware apps and patches will be affected?
Does anyone actually have the update yet?
Still waiting for it in Boston...
Sill waiting for it in Cambridge...
Still waiting in the second floor bathroom, 3rd stall from the left side of the wall
Still waiting for it behind you.
Still waiting for it in New York...
Get back to work... :)
Still waiting in Tampa. It is 1:30PM here - but it is still morning in Palo Alto.
still waiting in philly
I'm a little happy now that my original Sprint Palm Pre bit the dust and I moved to Nexus S 4G. I no longer have to wait on broken promises about any WebOS devices anymore!
see? We told you, you could still have a life with some other mobile device.
BTW, what are you still doing here?
Is owning a current WebOS device a requirement for posting here? If so, time to block every one who doesn't own a TouchPad, Veer, or Pre 2.
You don't find it odd that people that are done with webOS and glad to have moved on are still reading and posting in a website dedicated to webOS?
I agree. Kind of like they either want to see if they missed something, like any old girl friend they suddenly realized they should have held on to, or they want to kick sand in our faces. I bet it's the 'ole girl they miss!
It would be the 'ole guy' I would be missing, but me and my boyfriend are doing quite well, thanks for asking. :)
Meh, they all are mostly like mikah912 in terms of the content of their comments.
Don't you find it odd that you, rsanchez, prenutt, and so many others spend time discussing posters and members rather than HP's activities?
I do. Why are YOU guys here? I don't think they renamed this place to LoyaltyTestCentral.net.....yet.
I'm still here because I like the OS, I like the devs, and I like the community.
You must work for HP. You seem to be ignoring pre, pixi, and plus owners
+1
I say that your requirement for posting on this site is a Pre3
Lets start with Jay......I kid, well actually I'm not kidding. Lol
I never said I didn't miss WebOS, I do, I am just glad to get away for always 'wanting and waiting' for mostly broken promises.
If ever the Pre3 comes to Sprint, I'll do what ever it takes to move to that device. And then, maybe think of getting a TouchPad.
man... i'm really thinking about jumping ship too... trying to wait for the pre3 but my pre plus is SO busted. don't know what to do :-( i was really looking forward to a pre3 touchpad combo.
Nope. Now you can just wait on those broken promises for Android updated.
As an EVO user, I can assure you Android/Google miss their promises...or the OEM or Carries or whoever, misses their promises all the time.
Exactly. Over and over Android users get shafted in terms of updates. It has only happened to webOS users once, but then again when it did happen it happened to 99% of webOS users...
*sigh* nearly 2pm here in NY and still no update...I guess technically they've still got an hour and 12 minutes before "this morning" PST becomes yet another "coming soon".
i think he meant Hawaiian morning. It is 9.13am in Honolulu.
my finger is getting sore from hitting the update button so much
Verizon Pre2 update all over again. It's been over 2 months and still no update. I wonder how long it will take for the already missed target date for the TP update to roll out???
been with samsung android for over a year and still no update on froyo. i am stil on eclair or whatever the heck this crummpy version is. quit your grumbling.
-ps - getting a pre 2 soon.
You know it is not a physical button, right?
what?........ now I feel stupid.

Woohoo only if I could put it on my Pre minus...
LOL Everyone should just return their touchpads today. That will be a huge slap in the face to HP and maybe they will have this convo...
CEO: oh **** All these touchpad returns our product must really suck like all the reviews have said. Do you think we should raise the prices of our accessories?
Bob: Sir! what if we pay a celebrity 50 grand to hold the touchpad up to their face and talk about their life!
CEO: BRILLIAN! Wait wait... how will you know who the celebrity is if they are holding it up to their face?
Steve: Well..... we could CGI the whole thing and make it seem like the touchpad has a rear facing camera.
CEO: That's false advertising. . . . . . DO IT!
Kyle: Sir I think maybe we should listen to our webos enthusiasts and focus on getting multiple phones with different form factors on all carriers ASAP.
Bob: Shut up Kyle
CEO: Kyle GET THE **** OUTTA THIS OFFICE. YOU'RE FIRED!
CEO: Steve, Bob find a celebrities and roll with the commercials.
Bob: BRILLIANT!
CEO: BRILLIANT!
STEVE: HUZZAH!
What is this I don't even...
Bob: BRILLIANT!
CEO: BRILLIANT!
STEVE: HUZZAH!
...
PROFIT!
Is it necessary/advisable to uninstall any Preware patches before installing the OTA update?
Why would you comment here with that good question...how dare you!
I removed all my patches and such in preparation for this update. May not be necessary but just to be safe, only have 9 installed, on my Pre I had 30+, so re-installing shouldnt be a hassle.
w h e r e t h e e f f i s t h i s u p d a t e ? ? ? ?
Either the boys in HP-land are scrambling to get a last minute problem solved, or they're laughing their asses off...
HP must have one teeny tiny "pipeline".
Dudes! Give them a break. How much instant gratification do you need? Go get some coffee, or a sandwich, or some take a walk and just let it happen. If it doesn't happen by midnight, then God help HP.
Our patience has worn so thin, it can be measured in microns. If HP can't stand the heat, they should stop making promises they can't keep...
Instant gratification? I've been waiting for a new phone for over a year now. I feel like the guy from last of the mohicans, only in this case I feel like i'm the last of the Sprint pre.
More specifically people on this thread have been waiting for the decent touchpad since February.
OH WAIT. They released the veer. Horrayy. I'm satisfied. Let me go another step backwards carry an add-on to use my headphone jack and give up 1" of screen real estate. YAYYyyy
OH LOOK now they are offering me $50 on their overpriced tablet after endorsing webos for 2 years. oh and hey, the HP employees that have nothing to do with WebOS get the touchpad for the price the public should be getting it for.
GOD HP PI$$ES ME OFF.
Yeah, I'm not happy that they're offering the $50 rebate to anyone who can stumble through the door only a few weeks after making a big deal about giving early adopters $50 off. I'm a big webOS fan, but if this s**t doesn't stop soon, I'm chucking it all and going Windows Phone 7. At least I'd get real Office compatibility.
Obviously you haven't been here very long. Anything but instant around here...
I love how this went from being pitched as an update that would largely resolve the lagging issues and bring hardware acceleration to much of the UI to a minor bugfix and calculator/clock addition. Why do I feel like I perpetually hear about hardware accelerated UI for webOS and it never effing comes into effect?
They are rolling that out when they roll out Flash for the PreMinus.
Zing!
It's noon on the west coast....nothing
He didn't mention where it was rolling out from... Apparently Hawaii time zone...
This thread reminds me of that old Simpsons bit.
Just substitute with "Is the OTA available yet?":
