webOS 3.0 hacked to boot on Chinese desktop [video] 29

by Derek Kessler Sun, 03 Apr 2011 10:40 pm EDT

While it seems that HP’s current plans for webOS are to have it run in a window on a PC, that hasn’t stopped some industrious Chinese computer guru from getting what we assume is a copy of the webOS 3.0 SDK hacked to run on a desktop PC (déjà vu, anybody?). There are a few items that we can draw from this: it boots quickly, as it ought to with what we assume to be a multi-GHz x86 processor behind it. It’s also not exactly stable, crashing not long after the first boot. There’s not much to say, except for check out the video after the break.

Just to let you guys know, the video says it's running on a 2.5GHz Athlon II X4 (quad core). Looks like he OC'd it to 2.9GHz.

Anyway, that looks really nice. Think of the possibilities: convertible netbook w/ touchscreen + webOS = pure win.

It seems to me that you could put a hard drive in a computer, boot up a knoppix disk in the emulator and just do a DD or whatever from the emulator to the other hard drive then reboot your computer. Like how one of the original osx86 setups went.

like it

guy needs to take it easy on the keyboard

Cool and I agree about the keyboard stress! But lets play detective and figure out where he is by the background sounds! I hear an airport nearby, traffic, saws or something. Lets get the Fringe Division on this!

Hold on, I'll create a GUI interface with Visual Basic and see if we can track an IP address...

Enhance..

Enhance..

ENHANCE!!

Has this been done with android?

ROTFL homebrewer ingenuity at its finest. Didn't take long, and wont take long after the official release for non hp-pc's to have webOS booting on them in a window too :P

I want WebOS to be released on non HP computers!!!!!!!

I want webOS to be released on smarthphones not names Pre or Pre2!!!

I want webOS on my 2730P 8O
I would also like it if HP released a tablet with a digitizer. thanks

i think it's silly that this will at some point live with windows on desktops. make webos robust enough and have it be the bomb!

I don't think it's silly. I think it's a great way for windows users to get their first introduction to WebOS.

They should work on a Mac version as well!

Oh make it stop. It will boot and it might look cool for about 30 minutes but there will be limitations and you will go back to your traditional Linux PC eventually to get some actual things done like you always do. Some weirdos like to dress their pets up in clothes just to see what they'll look like but that doesn't make it right! Anyway, I thought we were trying to put some distance between the traditional PC form factor and WebOS.

Come on Summer!

> Come on Summer!

Looking forward to squeezing your chiuaua into her new bikini?

"Yo quiero dogs gone wild"

fast boot? Hardly.

That thing took about a minute on a 2.9Ghz cpu. I consider that pretty poor.

Comparatively, IOS on an iPhone 4 boots in about 30 seconds.

Count again...

@20second he picks the OS to boot
@1min 8seconds webos is usable

Damn close to a minute.
Ya he had enter in some commands along the way so say 45sec boot time.

With win7 boot nearly as fast why would anyone boot webos? Oh wait because of true multitasking and gestures?

Why are you guys comparing the boot speed of a hacked SDK to ANY widely available OS? Bash much?

Also, no one knows what the future will hold with WebOS on a PC, but I'm pretty sure the engineers at HP have a better idea than you do.

I am once again stricken by the flux of palm fanboys who do not know how to read or hold an argument, but rather just bash others who point out obvious points.

My comment about booting fast came from Derek's comment here "There are a few items that we can draw from this: it boots quickly, as it ought to with what we assume to be a multi-GHz x86 processor behind it"

I only made a comment on the OBVIOUS, yet people here are complaining on my post and marking me down as if I am bashing webos.

Truly, you fanboys are hotter than ever. You can't even admit when you're wrong. Truly pathetic guys.

Hope this was not directed at me I was trying to help prove your point.

Nope. It was a reply to our mutual friend json19

It takes like 10 seconds to load the emulator on my computer.

I'm still trying to figure out why anyone would want an HP touchpad when they removed one of webos's best features (gesture area) and make the notifications look and act more like android.

idk... mayb cuz its ultra glossy black. that could be a huge selling point to some :/

I really can't think of a single selling point for this thing. Really sad for HP to take away what everyone loved from webos. Don't go scratching your head when the product doesn't move.

I would buy one and I bet in a years time you be buying one too.
