webOS app downloads top 100 million 33
What happens when you add up the downloads from the webOS App Catalog, web distribution feed, and beta feed? You get a number greater than 100,000,000. It’s taken a little over a year and a half to get to this point, and the number still pales in comparison to the download count of from the likes of the iOS App Store and Android Market, but it’s still an impressive accomplishment and one worthy of applause. Or at least a polite golf clap.
So congratulations to Palm, HP, the Palm Developer Relations Team, and most importantly, the developers that put together the thousands of apps that make up this total. Without out you, there's no platform. Next stop: the moon. And by the moon, we mean San Francisco.
Update: Yeah, in case you're looking for a sense of scale, Apple is about to hit ten billion with a B downloads.
Thanks to Abe on Twitter for the heads up!

yay for big, round numbers! this is amazing!!
Does this 100,000,000 number include all the apps that had to be redownloaded several times after trips to the doctor?
Because then I could believe it....
Sweet!
You guys have posted some later articles lately. By late I mean time. Has your sleep cycle changed? lol.
Getting ready for February. *runs in place*
and, except for a few.norotiuos publishers of "books," the HPalm catalog has a much higher percentage of quality apps than the crApple catalog. Congrats, Palm!
even if true that doesn't really matter. Would you rather have 20% good apps out of 300,000 total or 30% good apps out of, for example 10000 total apps? Obviously the former because you get 60000 instead of just 3000.
i understand what you're saying, but if you have a commercial like Motorola did w/ that teaser for the Xoom(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=quI2I8wLPdc&feature=player_embedded)you could market your "app store"/catalog that way(basically like the person on here w/ their signature of stats on fart apps)...and just down play the quantity to the quality you actually have...
"app store"....1 million apps, but 900,000 are fart apps
android market...600,000...etc...

you get the idea

@GoBears, not being argumentative but not sure what you mean. It may be person to person, but I have to carry around my iPod touch to co
Pensate for what my phone can't do, and that doesn't even include the apps that require data to use. There are some apps on te catalog which are amazing, but others are missing or lack the functionality I need. Plus all I ever see is soundboards and books and little games. BUT I applaud palm and totally believe it will succede this year
That's because the idiots developing the book and soundboard "apps" spam the App Catalog with their daily metadata updates.
It's over 9000!
Give it a year.
How do you get the over 9000 count on updates? Just curious.
What is that "appcounter" app that is in the screenshot, and where can you get it?
appcounter is a beta name for an app I'm making, it's started out as an app to count the apps and downloads but it has evovled and will be more than that. PM me in the forums if you want details ;)
True. I really hope palm will create a filter for the app catalog. I know theres a patch, but I'm on a break from patching untill after 2.0 comes out then I'll see. I have noticed less issues and battery lifes better since my pre has been sober from patches, it ain't easy, I miss homebrewing but my pre is doing better without for now.
I think iPhone app store is over 7 billion now but not bad for WebOS. I hope news in Feb will help.
@Meltedwire - fenikkusu was making a humorous reference to one of Dragonball Z's most quoted lines by Prince Vegita. On another note, I hope I'm not the only nerd that got that lol.
I think a good 1/4 of those were downloaded by me.
@Darksim X: No, I noticed it too :-)
But am I the only one that noticed the strange rapport with 42 ?
5858 - 5000 - 800 - 10 - 6 = ?
Too bad I'm not a registered webOS dev :-( but where does the event take place ? In United States ? I wait for one coming to France ;-)
Got my Palm Pre 2 for a couple of months now. Too bad that a lot of apps are not available in EMEA, more specifically in the Netherlands.
Also I'm not impressed by the quality of the available apps. Maybe it's because there are not a lot of developers in EMEA. I'm still grabbing my Android phone for a lot of internet related applications. One application that's lagging for sure is a freeware navigation app like Google Nav. Another thing I don't like is the static content of the homescreen and the limitation of only 5 shortcuts. Something like widgets would be great.
search the forums for navit 3d(http://forums.precentral.net/webos-internals/254622-navit-3d-car-navigat...) or preware.
It should work even better for you since you're in Europe(OSM maps don't know what state is :( so it's hard to set destination for the US, but there are some workarounds).Yet there are some GPS API issues in weOS 2.0 that prevents the phone to get a gps lock.

off topic:
Anyone notice yahoo this morning?
Still shot from a video of a pre or pre plus being put into a bowl of water... hmmm..
If you watch the video you will notice
Yahoo News's Becky Worley using an iphone right up until its time to dunk it in water.. then they show a poor innocent pre to be sacrificed into the bowl of chilly water. Funny she didnt put her coveted iphone in the water.

Yay. App Store hit 1 billion in 9 months. This is 1/10th that in twice the time. Golf clap indeed.
Do you think Palm has 1/20 the market share of Apple at that time? Curious, but doubtful.
Waiting for 2/9, hoping for a quick release date after.
Yawn!
were to spend my time developing 100 million downloads in two years or a few billion????
decisions decisions
yawn, where to put your app, where your odds of being seen are 1 in 200,000 or 1 in 5,800?
I get your point helidos, but there is something to be said for playing in a smaller pond too.
Although to be fair, were I a developer I would be waiting to see if HP releases a couple devices that might actually succeed, as opposed to the Pre 2, which will nver be more than a niche device based on its small screen.
I see your point. But considering people can now and do search for what app they want being seen is less of an issue although it still is an issue.
But even spending time in the little pond there is also less fish biting what your selling.
Yet over in the big pond there is a diverse selection of fish species biting at just about anything dropped in the water.
Assuming that HP brings out some truly competetive hardware and gets it on the market right away, they need to throw a couple buckets full of money at the top iOS developers to get them to port over to webOS.
The App Store is nearing 10 billion downloads. Apple is running a contest because they are only 250 million downloads away.
