The webOS Dictionary 46

There's a lot to know about webOS. It's so much that we wouldn't blame you if you didn't know the difference between HSDPA and UMTS and HTML5 and CTIA and PGBU. Honestly, sometimes we aren't even sure.
We want you to know what it is that we're talking about when we talking about an OTA update or new APIs in the SDK. So we've taken some inspiration from our friends at Android Central and TiPb and worked up a handy new reference for you that we're so humbly calling The webOS Dictionary. We'll even make it easy for you to find: http://www.precentral.net/dictionary
See, wasn't that easy? We're going to keep updating and adding to The webOS Dictionary as time goes on, but in the meantime feel free to check it out, and then let us know in the comments back here what you think.

Wow. You guys really put in alot of work on this
Not a bad idea. It would be nice if there were two levels, as there's stuff that's universal (beta, AT&T, 3G, etc.), and there's stuff that's really webOS specific (cards, Ed Colligan, etc.). Even better, the webOS specific stuff should be hyperlinked to by the articles that use those terms.
But this also reminds me... why isn't there an official precentral app?
You don't like the unofficial one?
I ended up putting that aside... so yeah, I guess I don't like it. I can't remember what it was I didn't like, but if you'd like I'll try it again and report back.
For the articles, I use Feeder now, but there's so much more to the site, and that's where I think a precentral app should specialize. For example, this dictionary could be part of it (as suggested by someone else below).
please make sure you put kernEl in there. its ridiculous the amount of kernal's and karnals i've seen in the forums...
Disappointed that Pre Doodles didn't make it in there. :(
Mr. Ski Mask did!
Derek, This is a great idea. Can you add the WEbOS dictionary to the App Catalog and/or Preware? Thanks.
The code for the developer mode is wrong, it's webos20090606!
Thanks, fixed!
God bless you for leaving "Apple" out of the dictionary. FTW !!!
Brilliant! Amazing! Bravo! :D
Great job! The palm community is one of kind and is what has me keeping the faith (waiting CALLREC on webOS). I hope HPalm appreciates what you all do.
Awesome stuff!!
I have only one remark about entries for 4G, LTE, WiMAX.
There is no mobile network in USA that complies to 4G standards yet. LTE Advanced and WIMAX 2 are upcoming technologies that should provide real 4G speeds (1Gbit/s arguably) but they yet have to be implemented. Bottom line is LTE and WiMAX are not 4G tech, they can be declared 4G for marketing purposes we shouldn't be surprised about that, but lets not fool our people here on PreCentral.
They are marketed as 4G, and thus people know them as 4G. We debated this a bit, but it's the accepted general definition of 4G.
Actually, the standards board backed down and are now allowing HSPA+, LTE and WiMax to all be called 4G... :-(
Yeah, they're allowed to be called 4G, but until they reach the necessary 1GBps, they aren't actually 4G. Of course, nobody likes to hear that... but then again, that's about 60 times faster than my home connection (cable), so I'd love for some true 4G to come around soon :D
This is a great idea! Thanks!
Great Idea. I'm afraid nobody, who actually needs it, will use it.
One thing is missing:
Seidio: manufacturer of fake 1350mAh Battries ;-)
Luna ???
Is there a standard that defines 4G? How about a link?
OK: just been to Wikipedia. It seems that "more Gs than 3G" is about right.
Be sure to add the term SCBC (Sprint Cry Baby Choir).
What about the definition of "Pre-". I know some intrepid user will see this term used, and look at the dictionary, then be let down by the fact it is not defined.
Missed one for "Q" QNX purchased by RIM in 2010. The QNX OS for RIM's Playbook. QNX is blatant rip off of the WebOS UI, including gestures areas on the bezel.
I have to agree with Vladi,4G isn't really 4G. I posted an article Engadget had about the topic.Yes it is marked as 4G but does that alone qualify it as real 4G? It's just marketing. This isn't a topic that should be push aside. It would be kinda ok if it was done just to get more customers but when you do it to get more money then that's a problem. Those of us who have 4G phone are being charge extra just for 4G and it's not really 4G.That's not ok at all.
I likey! Just wondering why you use "was" in the webOS definition? WebOS is still in existence and will be for years to come.
Can you add "ESN" as in "phone has a clean ESN". Also "Toaster" - I've been wondering where that inside joke originated.
Excellent job. Is there a chance you might put it in one of your drop down menus--tips, apps, etc. so it is easily accessible? I hear most of my new terms here or on the forums & it would be handy to look them up while on the site. Again, thanks & great job.
This should also include a definition for "HPologist" - someone who is able to come up with a variety of excuses why HPalm has, for the most part, no products available from any US carrier at this point and how they managed to miss both the holiday season and CES.
I believe reference to toasters is from.. FLYING TOASTERS screen saver.
"Were you computing in the 90s? Then you’ll remember the flying toasters screensaver. If you missed it, then rejoice because it’s back. The folks at Uneasy Silence have released a clone of this most famous of screensavers, for both Windows and OS X users."
here is the link to this info

I don't think the PreCentral obsession with toasters directly comes from the screensaver, but you do raise an interesting point that there is a long history of geek obsession with that humble appliance. Flying toasters is just one example. Consider:
Hardware Wars -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6SH9-MpBQzI
Battlestar Galactica -- http://en.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/Toaster
Cylon toaster -- http://www.amazon.com/Battlestar-Galactica-LED-Toaster/dp/B002TIWVZS/ref...
Darth Vader toaster -- http://www.thinkgeek.com/homeoffice/kitchen/e72b/
There's definitely something deeper here.
I thought it came from some speculation that webOS could be used on kitchen appliances like the internet connected refrigerators that are out now... and someone joked that they should put it on a toaster and it stuck. Do any of you longtimers remember this?
I found the answer. Did a search of this blog for "toaster" and found the answer in the oldest post:

As a newbie I must say this is FABULOUS!
Thank you!
aGPS is not cellular triangulation.
aGPS means the cellular network tells the phone where the satellites are so it can get a faster location of satellites. Without aGPS, it could take minutes for the phone to calculate the location of satellites.
I'm not following this one, lol:
Forty-Two: The answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe, and everything.
ohhhhhhhh, lol
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/42_%28number%29
still unsure as to why its in this list though. haha, funny though.
The inclusion of 42 means it is truely complete. No dictionary would be complete without it. Thanks for all the fish.
Great job! I can hardly wait for the Brighthouse Labs version to come out!
suggestion:
Dictionary.precentral.net, better yet dict.precentral.net
what is the unofficial app lacking?:
Most notably nested comments. And, new comments being marked as new. (both things the website does) I also like how the wOR app tells you how many new articles.
just realized I can't use the webOS spell correction feature properly in the app either.. (trying to select a alt spelling doesn't work, it just thinks its selecting txt. Also, the first time a word gets autocorrected zoom changes.)
Actually, those are things that the PreCentral mobile site are lacking, which is basically what the unofficial site shows you.
Thank you! I love it.
You should also add the symbols that Palm uses for webOS terms, like meta tap and option key, to their dictionary entries.
Is it possible to translate this wonderful dictionary to spanish and publish it in our blog (webosencastellano.com) making reference to its origin?
Ah yes, from the above...let's not forget to add "SPAM" and it's brethern "Troll".
Great concept! It would be nice if there was also an appendix with tips and tricks for webOS (similar to the Preware Homebrew app)
good start....
how about adding big words like LUNA ?
