webOS Doctor for 1.3.5 Now Available for Sprint Users 27

by Jonathan I Ezor Wed, 30 Dec 2009 3:59 pm EST

Hot on the heels of the OTA push of the webOS 1.3.5 update on Monday, Palm has just posted a webOS Doctor version containing this latest version, at least for Sprint Pre and Pixi users (the Bell and O2 versions for Palm Pre users are currently still at 1.3.1.).

If you aren't familiar with webOS Doctor, it is a Java-based program that will restore your Palm webOS smartphone to its factory settings. The user downloads a small Java program that downloads the full webOS Doctor, connects the Pre or Pixi via USB, and runs webOS Doctor to restore the device to factory-fresh status. While it will overwrite any personal information and the operating system changes you have made, it does not (as of version 1.3.1 at least) delete the USB drive portion, so photos, music and other files remain in place. Unlike the OTA update process, though, you do not have to delete elements like themes or patches, since webOS Doctor will overwrite them with the original system files. After running webOS Doctor, the user must reactivate the phone on its carrier's network, and then either log into an existing profile to download contacts, App Catalog apps and (some) other profile data or create a new profile. webOS Doctor is also used by third party tools such as Jason Robitaille's webOS Repair Utility to verify and repair individual elements within webOS.

A few additional notes. First, if you are going to run webOS Doctor, be sure that you have the version that matches your operating system. Otherwise, you may be unintentionally downgrading, which can lead to problems reactivating or accessing your profile. Second, assuming you're running webOS Doctor by choice rather than by necessity, it can be helpful to do a manual backup just prior to the Doctoring, to ensure that once you reload your profile, it has your most recent account settings and app purchases. Finally, if your computer fails to recognize that your Pre or Pixi is plugged in and therefore webOS Doctor won't run, you may be able to force the device into recovery mode to make the connection.

For more information on webOS Doctor generally, you can see Palm's support pages (like this one for US customers).

Thanks to Eject_Porkins for the tip!

The last link under "this one for US customers" is incomplete.

Thanks--it's now fixed. {Jonathan}

How can we download this jar directly without running it? (i.e. For use with WebOS QuickInstall)

I agree - how do you get the 200MB file? Setting up this version of WebOS Dr doesn't seem to download the main file.

WebOS Internals has a page posting all the version of webos doctors, including this new 1.3.5:

http://www.webos-internals.org/wiki/Webos_Doctor_Versions

The article says that if webosDoctor won't run because your computer won't recognize your phone you can just enter recovery mode. Yay! So you click on the recovery mode link and it tells you to enter recovery mode by using webosdoctor. So basically in order to get WebosDoctor to run you first have to run WebosDoctor. WTF?

I DON'T KNOW, IF IS DUM OR NO BUT MY PHONE HAD THE SAME, THE COMPUTER DIDN'T WANT TO RECOGNIZE IT, BUT IT WAS BECAUSE I HAD AN EXTENSION USB CABLE FROM THE COMPUTER PORT TO THE PHONE CABLE, I TOOK OUT THE EXTENSION USB AND JUST CONNECT DIRECTLY TO THE PORT ON MY COMPUTER AND WAS RECOGNIZED WWAAALAAAAA.

THAT WAS MY SOLUTION BECAUSE I'M USING WINDOWS XP, IT JUST HAPPEN WITH XP, BUT WITH VISTA IT'S OK.

stfu!!!!

If you click on the recovery mode link, you need to scroll down the page to step 3 - "Put your phone in Recovery Mode". This tells you how to do it. Also note that in step 6 it says you may need to wait up to 20 minutes for the drivers to install and for the Next button to highlight.

That worked. I didn't scroll down far enough evidently. Thanks!!!

GGGOOOOOOOODDDDDD WE NEED IT!!!!!!!!

SOMETHING THAT I CAN RECOMMEND IS NOT TO UPDATE YOUR PHONES, BECAUSE HOMBREW APP/PATCH GIVE US EVERYTHING AND THE PALM UPDATES JUST MAKE A MESS WITH OUR PHONES(IF WE LIKE PREWARE), LET PASS MAYBE 10 DAYS UNTIL PREWARE IS TOTALY(PATCHES, APP...) COMPATIBLE WITH THE NEW PALM UPDATE.

ACTUALLY I MADE THE UPDATE TO 1.3.5 BUT THE PREWARE PATCHES DON'T WORK ON MY PHONE, THAT'S WHY I NEED TO GO BACK TO 1.3.1 TO MAKE IT WORK.

AND THE WORSE THING IS I LLOOSSTT MMYY CCOONNTTAACCTTSS(CRAP)

THAT'S WHY I'LL BE WAITING FOR PREWARE AND 1.3.5 FULLY COMPATIBLE.

TELL ME WHEN PREWARE IS COMPATIBLE WITH 1.3.5??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Ok......

Wait for it......

Ok, Now... It's compatable with 1.3.5

If you are still having problems, Uninstall Preware (Reverse the installation instructions) and reinstall it...

Have Fun.

do u have to call sprint to reactivate your phone after u doctor it or just turn it on as usual ?

No need to call Sprint. The phone will guide you thru the process.

thx

ok so ive downloaded this new 1.3.5 and i see no difference: so 1. can someone tell me what are the enhancements, 2. how do i get my preware to work, and 3. how dow i unistall this 1.3.5 (if applicable)

Guys, I have had this issue 1.3.1 and now with 1.3.5, if I doctor my phone it is not wiping out my personal information and leaving some patched behind as well, I have done it several times with no luck. What am I doing wrong?

I ran into this too. WebOSDr, doesn't do a complete wipe anymore. You have to do a Full Erase from Device Info, then activte the phone, and then run Dr. It will work and take off the embedded patches.

Will it wipe out my memos?

I am currently running 1.3.1. Can I wipe my device (which I wish to do) with the new WebOSDoctor and not have to upgrade to 1.3.5 over the phone first?

Sure can and this is how Im goin to update to 1.3.5 :)

does anyone know what's going on with homebrew's virtual keyboard ? i updated to palm webOS 1.3.5 yesterday . although the homebrew apps that i have like the " yule log " still work after the update , i lost and am unable to reinstall the virtual keyboard . am i missing somethig here besides the virtual keyboard . according to one other recent post , i'm not the only person having this issue . any help would be greatly appreciated . thanx in advance ;-) . my email address is :

snickerdo9@yahoo.com

the keyboard is updated u have to download the obsolete keyboard 1st

A note to those considering doctoring - And I hope this is not a Palm systemic issue - Check yer backup. I backed out my patch (I only have one) and made sure Preware was up to the new version 0.9.27 before doing my upgrade. I have no issues, but after the fact, realized I'd forgotten to force a last minute backup. So I went to check it - mine was dated 12/4/09! Looks like my Pre hasn't been practicing safe backups. While all is well for me, it made me wonder how many other folks have outdated backups and don't realize it.

Yeah that has been a known issue off and on. Current solution is turn off backup, turn it back on, and then do a manual backup. Should start working fine then.

i have noticed that wifi does not turn off while in stand by. Is it me, or is it a new feature? if it is, HOORAY! :D

Will it wipe out SMSs?
