WebOS Internals working on VOIP for webOS 37

by Dieter Bohn Tue, 08 Feb 2011 10:38 pm EST

Bored with waiting for the Verizon Pre 2 with its Skype? Here's another voice solution for you to wait for. WebOS Internals is apparently working on a VOIP client they're calling Linphone that will work with any SIP client and bring webOS a little closer to Android 2.3 in functionality. They'll be adding it to the Preware testing feeds when it's good and ready, so get good and set for some homebrew calling options that don't use your minutes.

Another screenshot showing prefs after the break!

Cool, Is this for webOS 2.x only or is it compatible for 1.4.x?

from 1.4.x onwards... Started living on a 1.4.0 Pre minus!

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOP!!!!!

This is most excellent timing for me (and my S.O.). International calling without long distance rates!!

You, Thibaud, are the best (everybody working on this project gets a +1) :D

Looks like it isn't webOS only, but a port instead: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linphone

Note that Thibaud is the lead developer on this project.

WOW!!! You guys don't even realize how long I have been waiting for this. webOSinternals please gave us more reasons to gladly send money your way!! Love you guys!

Questions from a rookie:

*What is a "SIP client"?

*Will this do everything Skype does?

*Can I use it from my phone to talk to a friend in Europe who is using a computer, not a WebOS device?

Thank you.

SIP = Session Initiation Protocol -- a VoIP standard. Implemented in Asterisk, an open source phone system. Skype doesn't use this protocol, but there are gateways. If your and your friend in Europe can rendezvoux via a common VoIP protocol or through gateway, then yes, you can communicate.

You can get free SIP clients for Macs and PCs. X-lite is one example of a PC client that I use, but there are others. You and your friend will likely need to register with a SIP provider (there are lots and lots around - some ask for monthly tariffs with included minutes and some are free until you call a land line). Or you can pay very little to call land lines through your SIP. SIP calls to land lines tend to be cheaper than Skype.

Hey Rod, will I be able to make calls over wifi, or will my phone need to have minutes before I can make calls?

I've been waiting forever for a soft phone for my PBX. This would be awesome!

Same here. This is awesome! Asterisk for you?

Sounds like hope for simultaneous voice and data (i.e. all data) over CDMA (Sprint)...

this is totally awesome. Been waiting for a SIP Client forever. WebOS Internals is a heck of a dev group.

Very cool. Have you done any testing with Microsoft Lync?

YES!!!!!

Thank goodness- I had to switch to iphone 3 months ago because I had to have a handset that supports SIP/VOIP, but I kept my Sprint Pre (which I have transformed into a Pre Plus - muahahahha) in the hopes this might happen.

Hopefully this VOIP app will work as well or better than Groundwire for iOS, which is what I have been using. I highly recommend that the developers of this app take a look at Groundwire for ideas of possible features.

Boy howdy, that is great news! Thanks again, WebOS Internals! You're going to get a bit of my tax return when it comes in next week.

Awesome!

webOS Internals fails to fail.

Great stuff.
I have been missing a SIP client for a long time.
Lets hope that I can stop carry a secundary device on my trips soon...

How does this work?
- Will it be a new IM software (alternative to Skype/GTalk/etc.) providing voice call between 2 devices connected to the internet?
- Or, is it a software to call real phones (landline and/or mobile) via the internet?

In the second case, what will be the rates?

It is the second case. The cost depends on the service provider you use. My router at home i.e. can work as a SIP server. Thus I could use my pre as a wifi handset at home :)

Brilliant! If I understand correctly, the main issue with a SIP client was that Palm did not have microphone API's for WebOS1.x. But having developed the homebrew voice recorder, it does make lots of sense now to use the (presumably) homebrew mic API developed for it, for other apps as well. This is great. I wish Palm itself was as resourceful and dedicated.

How would it work for me?

I travel abroad a lot when working. I ususally have wifi at my hotel room. I want to call home, either to the house phone or to my wife’s cel (iphone 4 with skype)... Would it work for me in any of these cases?... If it does it would change my life

Anyhow, great job

Wooow :), I have been waiting for this since a bought my Palm pre.

Great job!

Sweet, man I'm glad I still have an Asterisk running my home phone line. I almost got rid of it. Now I have one more excuse to use my Pre around the house since I got the EVO.

This will be like gettng a new Pre again ! Great news ! Thanks webos-internals.

Wait, if they don't have the API for the MIC yet (at least I don't think they do) how will this work? I guess it will require a headset?

Isn't the exact purpose of homebrew to fill-in the gap and connect the dots? So if you don't have the APIs, just build them! ;)

damn, I never use my minutes because I'm always calling mobiles and Sprint gives us those minutes unlimited, nights starting at 7, then weekends as well. BUT then I realized I can't call internationally without those rates, so I'm excited about this as well about this.

i have been waiting for this. very excited

Perfect timing! Have been looking for a VOIP solution for my Sprint Pre. Do want and thanks!

so far it works great at placing calls from my pre- but I have yet to be able to receive one. webos 1.4.5 sprint patched and oc'd

darn you webos internalz. Now I HAVE to send you some money. haha.

just donated!!

linphone as been tested on webos 2.x? ipkg is available?
thx!!!

YEs I want to test it .
