webOS, Pre making a mark in AdMob reports 28

AdMob traffic report

In the AdMob mobile internet traffic report from the 3rd quarter of 2009, Palm’s two operating systems were lumped together in the “not that significant” category. With 2009 behind us, the last quarter has shown growth in webOS traffic [pdf] (and decline in Palm OS) significant enough that the operating system now gets a color all to itself. While the iPhone still dominates internet traffic reports pretty much everywhere but Africa and Asia (both owned by Symbian), webOS uptake has been significant enough to warrant note in both the North American and Western Europe smartphone OS share breakdowns. Palm even logs a spot in the top worldwide manufacturers list, grabbing a depressing 1.0% of the global share of requests.

What’s more fun, however, is how the Pre itself stacks up against the competition. In North America, Palm’s little smartphone accounted for 2.9% of AdMob ad requests from smartphones in the last quarter of 2009, while in Western Europe the Pre clocked in at 0.9%. While those numbers are low, they are placing the Pre as the #8 smartphone in North America and #7 in Western Europe.

As before, Palm devices account for a large share of the traffic on Sprint’s network, though that share has been halved since the last quarter. Don’t panic, it’s not a defection away from Palm, but more of an explosion of traffic from new smartphones (such as the Samsung Moment) on Sprint’s network that has driven down Palm’s share.

And as always, it is worth noting that AdMob’s mobile advertising business flourished on the iPhone and that their statistics are based entirely upon requests for their ads. While AdMob is indeed the dominate mobile ad distributor, they are geared heavily towards iPhone advertisement and thus their numbers show a substantial skew towards iPhone traffic. That said, their numbers are good for quarter-to-quarter comparisons.

it's about time more people start recognizing the underdog pre. Phone does everything the iphone does plus more! But nobody really knows except us owners! Per the lack of market advertising

We can shoot video?
We can set up a conference call?
We can talk/surf at the same time?
We can run Sling Player?

With 1.4.
Yes.
Yes, actually - EVDO Rev. A allows that so long as voice is through VoIP (Handled by the network, NOT Skype or the like)
And soon, most likely. The Palm OS had it, so it is just a matter of time.

Someday it will do these things. My response was to "Phone does everything the iphone does plus more!"

So, no.
No
The phone doesnt, but an app will with variable quality.
And no.

PreDogs says...

"We can shoot video..." (and so on)

I say...

We can pop in a fresh battery while on the move! And with a little help from a mobile charging device, we can hot-swap without interupting anything!

We can type on a real tactile keyboard!

We can flip back and forth between applications without enduring an annoying home screen and splash screen every time!

I will never tolerate a device where my only alternative for typing text is tapping on glass.

love sprint love pre

Also, remember that many have their Pre set to imitate the I-Phone. So it inflates Apple's numbers and deflates Palm's.

I had this set for a while but abandoned it for just this reason.

I was just wondering same thing. Will Pre's w/ iPhone imitator patch artifically up iphone # & decrease WebbOS#? Though still probably only a drop in the bucket of overall #'s.

Drop in the bucket. We at PreCentral are but a small (but vocal) contingent of webOS users.

These are based on hits from ads in apps, like the one in the Accuweather app. WebOS didn't even register last time, but they didn't have applications using the apps yet. As more markets start getting these kind of apps, and more apps use these ads on the Pre for free versions it will probably increase. Though you shouldn't expect it to take the whole graph by storm and be a major player overnight.

I was wondering that. So I don't have any of those apps, but I do use my Pre constantly. I'm not even on that graph then.

Oceania? is that next to Atlantis. no wonder Iphone does well

hahaha way to go Palm

No no no, Oceania has always been at war with Eurasia. Wait, I mean Oceania has always been at war with Eastasia.

Oceania is not at war with Eastasia. Oceania has never been at war with Eastasia.

They should do this chart again @ the end of Q4 because I'll bet anyone that (1) webOS will AT MINIMUM triple it's current share in each respectable market w/ North America seeing the biggest jump, (2) Apple's iPhone % dropping significantly, (3) WinMo gaining ALMOST top spot w/ Windows 7 on the horizon, and (4) Android losing steam due to it's lack of focus. But hey, that's just my opinion. As long as Palm keeps doing what they need to be doing to make believers out of "brainwashed" skeptics who think iPhone and Android can really multitask...Palm will rise and be where it deserves to be =)

Great Reporting!

I consider this the best analysis of a report (that I have read) posted by Derek to date. He gave a lot of reasons behind the numbers. And the observations were balanced. This is something that is typically missing from the modern journalistic profession (who usually infuse a lot of personal bias in their articles).

That graph is depressing.

I'm stunned that West Europe is dominated by iPhone and that Android is ahead of Sybian. WTF?

PreDogs, you are right, I always taught Symbian had a stronghold in Europe...

HAHAHA, great 1984 references!!!!

This is traffic, not market share. With an iPhone in Germany, you get an expensive data plan with a lot of traffic included (while for other phones, you don

I like pre is noticed I'd like to see it keep growing steady. I think alot more people that have their webOS For a long time will keep them and it just a matter of time before it takes over :) love sprint love my pre.sayin this while bumpin slacker and texting some chick ;)

Lol... The power of multitasking

onE more day to go until we get the update
AM SO EXITED TO GET THE UPDATE ILL BE CHECKING MORE CONSTANTLY

Was... soviele Leute sollen das iPhone nutzen echt?

Alter Schwede, h

Leider ja ....

I'm going to go ahead and say that to some degree we can't equate "major iPhone representation" with ad support. Symbian kicking iPhone's butt in Africa? There ya go. But yeah...

Go webOS!!! *hugs Pre*

Too bad, I block advertisements. Yay, open linux-based devices! You can do it via iptables with reject rules, or an /etc/hosts file.

Ads being hit from a device are no good indication of market share. I categorize advertisements as a form of malware, and treat them as such.
