webOS Weekly - Bring on the news 3
The webOS Weekly is a regular column that pulls together the latest talk and news from around the web about the Palm brand and HP webOS mobile platform. Check back here every Saturday for more updates on what the community is up to, and send your stories to tim@precentral.net to have them added in next week.
Jump over the break to catch videos, twitter conversations, blog posts and more from the wide world of webOS users.
On the Tube
- HP was at the Gadget Show 2011 recently to show off their TouchPad, Pre 3 and Veer devices to tech enthusiasts, and they've recently uploaded a video to show what some people were saying about what they saw at the event. There's a lot of talk about the TouchPad, naturally, and some nice excitement from people who are interested in getting a future webOS device. Can't say we don't like that.
- Want to know if your Palm Pixi is ever going to get a webOS 2.0 update? Well, it may not be coming from the official OTA channels, but some users are already showing what it looks like to have the new version of webOS on these small-screened devices. We've already seen this once before, but the video is new and shows several devices with webOS running smoothly.
- WikiXplorer is an app by ScienceApps that allows you to do quick browsing of Wikipedia in a unique (and webOS exclusive) user interface. Their recent video shows some of the basic features of the app, including some social networking tools that could come in handy for you people that like to share what you read. After you watch the video, you can download WikiXplorer here.
- The Spaz webOS Twitter client, by Ed Finkler (aka Funkatron), is one of the very few free twitter apps that has been getting continual updates and many hours of development time put in to keep it relevant for the community. WebOS Internals has a cool video of the history of Spaz development over the two years that it has been in development, and it gives a bit of appreciation for the amount of energy that has gone into making the app what it is today.
Around the Web
- Darren Humphries, who is quite known in the mobile tech community, has shared a really neat photo of his car that he took with a Pre 2 (and then did some editing to). The result is actually pretty cool, and shows what having a camera handy, even just the one in your phone, can do for your day.
- One of the features of webOS 2.0 that has got most of this community excited goes by the sweet little name of Just Type, and according to Mochael Olsen (@deferom), is has the potential to blow people's minds. How have you used Just Type to do the same?
- Even though we don't necessarily need to hear it again, there are still a lot of users waiting for news on when the next device is going to be released. One @PrdAmerican is putting it to Palm bluntly, as are many others, but we don't expect a response to come as simply as that. While we wait, maybe it's a good time to start building some apps, learning how to develop in Enyo, or just gettng to know the strengths of the rest of the community. When everything does finally go down (May 2nd, maybe?) we'll be ready for some good times ahead of us.
- Matt Joe, VP of Tech at POP, has a lot of good things to say about the future of webOS. His recent article on Venture Beat shows some of the great potential that he sees in the platform, but goes beyond just simple cheerleading and describes what he believes are the best things that the competition, Android, Apple and others, can take from webOS and learn to improve their own ecosystems. Let's just hope they hold off a bit and give HP a chance to get in the game first, otherwise the news might be a bit slow around here for a while longer.
A Week of News
If you've already been keeping up with the week of webOS news through the P|C blog, then some of these stories may not, in fact, be new to you. But we include them here anyway for people who might have missed some of what was going on this past week.
- The HP Veer is coming closer and closer to being released, and it looks as though O2 Germany is already looking to grab a bite of that pie. We've got some word from the o2insider Twitter account that we'll be seeing the device shipped in Germanysometime in June, with Pre-orders being accepted now (at an unknown price).
- The news about a June release for Germany does not mean that we'll have to wait that long in other countries (particularly the US). In fact, a Veer launch party is scheduled for May 2nd in Anaheim, California, and we can't imagine them celebrating a launch unless one was coming soon (if not immediately) after. Some details from the invite also mentioned requiring an AT&T Badge, which pretty well confirms our previous prediction on which carrier was getting the device.
- People have often wondered when and if someone would bring webOS onto an Android device to test out other hardware with the platform, but ironically, someone has actually done exactly the opposite. k3dar has taken it upon himself to dual-boot Android OS onto an original Pre minus with some good success, albeit somewhat risky. What do we think about this? Hey, if they can do it with a Pre-, what will happen with the Pre 3 when it's released?
- If you are one of the unlucky many that is stuck behind carrier- and geo-restricted app catalog walls, a new app from Michael Schumacker, DummyMaker, may be your ticket to some freedom. With the new app, and a little bit of legwork, you'll be able to get any free apps available from the US App Catalog with no problems. Still won't work for Paid apps, but it's yet another step closer to seeing that dream realized.

First! ya
I was kinda stoked about the Veer. My kid wants one. But now I see it's gonna be on ATT! :(
I think they ought to offer all models on all carriers though! It just makes more sense to have choices...
Impostah 0.8 brings the pre-activation process for non-US phones to the masses, i'd say that's pretty important!
When is Pre going to get an Audible App? I have had my Pre Plus for a year and a half and I am tired of illegle operations of Motion Apps. I have used Palm products for 10 plus years and even though I like the Webos operating system this is my last unless Palm or HP get in gear.
