webOS Weekly - An Official Release 3
by Tim Stiffler-Dean Sun, 17 Jul 2011 6:28 am EDT
It's been another great week in the world of webOS devices, and the community has been alive as both new and veteran webOS users start to dig into the core of the TouchPad to uncover some cool treats. Across the internet in blogs, social networks, videos and all of the lines in between have found a lot to talk about in today's webOS Weekly. Click through the break to read stories from around the world about what people are doing with their webOS devices, and let us know in the comments below about other bits of cool info that you'd like to share with our readers.
Latest News
- The biggest news of the week, by far, comes straight from webOS executives at HP (which have seen a lot of shuffeling recently). While the TouchPad was released just over two weeks ago, the July 1st launch was apparently a soft launch, with the hard launch coming on July 17th, which just happens to be today. Meanwhile, for those of you looking forward to the first OTA update to bring some much needed bug fixes and feature additions, it should be coming just around the corner. By the way, the TouchPad is now available in not only the US, but also the UK, Germany, Canada and France.
- The first video hands-on look at the Pre 3 has arrived from Sky TV and Mark Bunting, and it does a fine job of showing off the features of the upcoming device. While you're watching, you may notice that he says the device has a single-core processor, because frankly, that's just the truth. No dual-core processor for the Pre 3; but do we really need it?
- Finally, a new TouchPad is getting ready to be released sometime in the near future, and this one will be tied to a carrier network and labelled as a 4G tablet device and given a bit of a spec bump. That's right, AT&T and HP have announced that they will be bringing the HP TouchPad 4G to Ma Bell, and we've already gotten a first hands-on with it.
Around the Web
- While some Russian students are being recruited by HP to build webOS apps, the company has decided to head straight into St. Petersburg to show off the latest devices publicly as well. It's today, though, so unless you already knew about it, might be a little too late to get involved.
- Stephen DeWitt and Jon Rubenstein have been talking to the public a lot lately, and this time they've spent some time interviewing together with the guys at ThisIsMyNext.com. They provide a lot of the same information we've already seen elsewhere, but they also answer a few questions directly that no other interviewers have had the opportunity to ask.
- Rothgar is looking for people interested in Southern California to get together sometime for a good old fashioned webOS Meetup. See him on twitter to get the details, and be sure to take pictures when you arrive!
- Want to know what an HP TouchPad launch party looks like in an HP store? There is one such store in Vancouver, Canada, and they recently had a party to go with the release of the TouchPad in the North American country. Of course, they mostly focus on the features of the TouchPad, but it's still a good video to see.
- If you're a developer that is interested in building for multiple platforms, you might want to check out haXe NME for webOS, Android, iOS and Windows. On Joshua Granick's website you'll see tutorials on how to get going, a testimonial from webOS developer Zhephree, and a number of comments below from developers who are trying out the codebase.
- While many developers are enjoying the benefits of HP's new developer program, our favorite homebrew development team WebOS Internals is poking a bit of fun at HP by reminding us that they have very few apps available in the catalog to take advantage of the system. As wise as the team is, though, they no doubt have a solution in store.
- Lastly, in a recent From the Forums post we asked you all to welcome Natalie from HP to our forums as a visitor, but we forgot to mention long-standing forum member HardBeatz as well. As an HP employee, HardBeatz has been with us through thick and thin, offering support and feedback to users, reading and logging bugs that we've reported about. So here's a shout-out to HardBeatz, and a thanks for hanging around with us for so long.

are you guys going to review the touchpad 4g? hopefully it will be a good review like the last touchpad review :)
The article should be something like this;
It's been another weak week in the world of webOS device and the community has been alive as both new and veteran webOS users start to show their frustration with HP.
New webOS users are confused as the touchpad prices continue to drop slowly every week and will eventually hit the price point it should have been released at.
Veteran webOS users are taking advantage of being free from their 2 year contract and switching to the latest HTC phones running android. The latest pre-doodle titled "Don't Jump" displays the crickets chirping which represent those that have already jumped to Android due to "being tired of left behind while the rest of the smartphone world advances."
(True story) The latest US Weekly magazine titled "All about Katie Perry" contained an interesting article how her and her husband Russell Brand use the ipad2 to facetime while she is away on tours. Yet another fail at finding the right endorser HP.
Stay tuned WebOS fans, a new better tablet is already on the way to make those of you that bought yours feel silly and for those of you that are waiting for the pre 3 well it's been delayed from summer to fall but in the fall we will announce that it's been delayed to Winter and will be released at the same price point as the new iphone 5.
This just in from HP directly regarding the veer, "We're sorry. what the **** were we thinking? and only available on AT&T...oh man. Well we promise to make devices that people actually want from now on. A slate phone is being discussed in the coming months. Sorry"
(ok that part was false but funny)
As the pre-doodle said folks, "Don't Jump!" there's lots to stick around for... eventually.
Thanks for recognizing forum member HardBeatZ who has been working hard to sort out the bugs we've been reporting.
