What are your favorite games? [PC Brain Trust] 91

by Robert Werlinger Fri, 11 Jun 2010 4:08 pm EDT

We've been spotlighting our favorite apps on a regular basis here, but the truth is that our members' collected wisdom is greater than ours.  Here's how it works: you tell us in the comments what the best stuff is, we gather up your favorites, and report back on what's hot.

Gaming is a big deal on webOS, with the gaming category representing a large majority of what's available in the App Catalog.  There are plenty of styles and genres available to users of the platform, from epic 3D titles like Need for Speed to games from independent developers like Paratrooper, and we want to know: What are your absolute favorites?

Ancient Frog is awesome! Besides that, NOVA and Asphalt 5 are really fun

right now my top games are ..
Mobsters
spades and hearts

I have Asphalt 5 andim really disappointed in that you can't finish it..
the settlers is good but def be better (no quick way to find any territory or infintray)
Assassins Creed likewise is ok.. Buts a bit repetative..
Need for speed needs more racing missions and less storyline videos..

flash will be my favourite game ....iff the promise finally get ..........

I think tiger woods pga tour is awesome!

agreed!

Defensive Warfare. It's a variation of the towers game. It's the only game I have on my Palm pre, and for good reason. I lost 2 days playing it. Won't be downloading another game again for a long while. Don't have that kind of time to waste.

Virus Defense! Love it.

Ancient Frog is one of the best puzzle games on any mobile platform. Other than that, Transformers G1 gets the most of my playtime. Sad to see it runs so much better on the iphone, though.

Critical Mass, Transformers G1, Glyder 2, Hearts Free, SkyBox, and Desteroids.

Current Favorite:
Defensive Warfare

Well worth the purchase:
Full Price
- Let's Golf
- The Settlers

$.99
- Deer Hunter
- Paratrooper

Free
- Critical Mass
- AirTraffice Lite - (need a full version)

Use to play:
Word Ace
Card Ace: Blackjack

Transformers G1, Dungeon Hunter and Dungeon Quest all get a lot of play on my Pre.

cloud hopper, skybox, paratrooper, asphalt 5, and shrek (hey, i like mario kart!)

Feel a little weird here because none of my choices have been mentioned.

Monopoly
UNO
Blocks

I find myself playing Crosswords a good bit. It is a sad commentary that I have been so slammed lately that my Pre has been pretty much all business and I don't remember half the games on it. I need a vacation. Let me look...

I bought Deer Hunter and was glad it was $0.99, because I hate having to rush a shot while hunting and is something I'll never do. Just too much real hunting in my life where a rushed shot doesn't have the "No animal killed" that the game has, but an animal killed after suffering for 6 hours reality of real life.

Transformers is another that I was glad it was $0.99, because it gets BOORRRING really fast.

I wanted to like World Series of Poker, but it required 95% of the memory of my Sprint Pre and therefore never runs or gives errors if anything else happens while running.

Defensive Warfare is great. I also play my Word Whirl. I've found KO boxing fun, but sometimes have to search the web for tips on getting past certain fighters.

I find Earthworm Jim completely unplayable without a D-pad.

While Geocaching for WebOS isn't really a game, it is fun. I haven't Geocached in quite a while and it is a pretty decent app for it.

The Helicopter Game is the best free, and my favorite 34 games are NOVA, Modern Combat, and the 2 Brothers in arms games

do you mean 3D?

Fall e all the way!!!!!

Totally addicted to Fall-E. Simple, yet brilliant. The perfect game when you only have a few minutes.

Agreed fall-e is a amazing. I remember playing this in high school on a TI-83 Plus haha.

Other games I like a lot are crosswords, and Asphalt 5. Contemplating buying Need for Speed UnderCover (but might wait until I finish Asphalt 5)

Good question. 3D Games on the Pre are impressive, but to be quite honest, I keep coming back to more simple casual games.

-SkyClimber (Definitely my #1 at the moment, very addicting. I recommend the paid version)
-Tri-Match (Bejeweled, very good, controls are awesome, but no sound)
-Card games: Freecell, Free Klondike Solitare, Spades, Hearts Free (All are great and free)
-AirTraffic Lite
-The Helicopter Game (I mean, come on!)

Paid:
Super KO Boxing, Let's Golf, Mini Golf Wacky Worlds, Deer Hunter, and Dungeon Hunter are all awesome

Free:
The Helicopter game, Wabbit Hunt Lite, Zombie's Fury, Hearts free, and Spades

smiles
ancient frog
orbland
wobble words
critical mass
and minefield

let's golf, asphalt 5, and shrek kart are fun, but I already beat them.

Addicted to Defensive Warfare...ADDICTED!

Cloud Hopper is my favorite at the moment.

When I read the title of the article I wanted to shout "EDGE!", but I think you were talking about webOS games, in which I would have yelled, "Asphalt 5!"

That Sh*t runs like butter.

Asphalt 5 and Glyder for quick fun, Let's Golf and Mini Golf Wacky Worlds when I've got some time to sit and play. WSOP isn't bad at all, either.

I gotta join in on the Ancient Frog love-fest...

Also high marks to Rockus Racer and Fall-E... I love games I can pick up and put down at random throughout the day.

Thanks so much for mentioning Paratrooper! We've had such great feedback and support from the Precentral community, it's been great.

Thanks so much for making us the highest ranking (paid) game on the Palm Hot Apps list! Here's hoping we hang onto our position for the next 22 days.

I personally like Fall-e and Sky Climber. Good quality, and Free.

H.A.W.X.

Have many / Play a few:

Play:
- Deer Hunter --5*
- Glyder 2 --5*
- Lets Golf --5*
- Card Ace: Blackjack (best free game!) --5*
- Cinema Spin (2nd-best free game!) --4*
- Dope Wars (best free homebrew!) --4*

Used to Play:
- Need for Speed --5*
- Asphalt 5 --5*
- Zombie Invasion --5*
- Quake (homebrew - limited) --4*

Have:
- N.O.V.A. --4*
- Shrek Kart --4*
- Super KO Boxing --4*
- Hero of Sparta --haven't tried yet
- Mini Golf --4*
- Transformers G1 --2*
- Real Tennis (note: love idea/hate game) --1*
- How to Train Your Dragon --haven't tried yet
- Brain Challenge --3*
- Word Whirl --3*
- Wobble Words --3*
- Tilt GT --3*

Note: It may seem like a do a lot of gaming on my Pre. I don't. Maybe 2-3 hrs a week max. Just like to have the games in case! Surprise hit for me was Deer Hunter. Didn't think I'd like it and it's my favorite game.

skyclimber by far... i have played N.O.V.A and many other games, but nothing is more addicting than skyclimber

Does Mobile Cash Quest count as a game? It's entertaining as H_ll!!

Also high on my play list:
Word Whirl (paid)
Dope Wars (Homebrew, free)
Defensive Warfare (just picked it up this am)
Critical Mass (free)

Good for a few minutes to kill: Sky Climber (free, will pick up the paid version soon)

wordace

N.O.V.A. ... Then again I'm a Halo junkie.. Gives me my fix when on the road..

other then that I play ALOT of Word Ace and Card Ace

My number one game that I probably spend about 30-minutes playing every day is CRITICAL MASS!!! It's awesome!

My girlfriend's favorite is Sky Climber (she calls it Silly Climber).

As of now....

Real Tennis
Let's Golf
Mahjong Solitaire Lite

Favorite paid game: Super KO Boxing 2. I also really enjoy Real Tennis.

Favorite free games: AirTraffic Lite, Critical Mass, Destroids, SkyBox, The Helicopter Game.

Wish I didn't pay 99 cents for them: Brain Challenge, Castle of Magic.

Love Blades of Fury - a great Soul Calibur clone. It just needs multiplayer to be perfect.

I also really enjoy Need For Speed: Undercover. It really takes advantage of the hardware, and the unique story and racing modes puts it a notch above Asphalt 5.

Last, Dungeon Hunter is a really fun hack-slash RPG.

I bought NOVA, and I love the graphics, but the controls are frustrating as hell. Maybe I'll get the hang of it, but it mostly leaves me wishing for a Bluetooth gamepad.

WAR. but i might be biased. ;)

Kinda boring, but I like Word Whirl, solitaire & asphalt 5.

Best puzzle games: Word Whirl, Plumber's Nightmare & Enjoy Daily Sudoku. Ancient Frog is pretty, but it's too easy and relatively expensive (though much cheaper than a few years ago)

Best card game: Spades (free) and Hearts (free)

Too bad there aren't any decent solitaire games and really miss Mille Borne (Rally 1000) from Palm OS days

Video Poker is a great solitaire game and it is free - I have been up to $5,000,000 and back to zero twice. It is addictive!

Almost forgot Zilch is a great, quick dice game and there's a free version almost identical to the paid one.

Best game ever: Cloud Hopper. :)

My favorite is Cloud Hopper! I'm lovin all the new characters that are available!!

Critical Mass and Enjoy Daily Sudoku for most played; Transformers G1 just for showing off the phone - the battle scenes look very cool.

Mazer is great - the physics are perfect, there's a ridiculous number of levels (like over 150), it's got 4 games in one, and it's FREE!

Mahjong Solitaire
Five Or More
bLines
Mini Golf: Wacky
Enjoy Sudoku
Puzzle Fun

I just reviewed cloud hopper in the app catalog (gave it five stars) and it's not been downloaded as much as others. I'm not sure why but that game is addictive. I turned my wife onto it and she played it non-stop until she beat my high score. Her new record is 20,000. I've moved onto to skybox for a bit but I still like cloud hopper because it's easy to get in and out of. Doesn't require as much time dedication like some of the 3D games.

I just got Catch Words - so far I've played a few games and it's pretty impressive!

Surprised no one has mentioned Avatar yet - probably one of my favorites so far
Also liked Deer Hunter more than I expected (worth a try a .99)
Lets Golf is nice, now waiting for Tiger Woods to go on sale
Transformers is fun but different
TangramPuzzle took me back to my childhood

Scrabble even though it's not perfect (and probably never will be updated to make it better) and Cronk. I'm not sure Crosswords qualifies as a game, but it's my absolute favorite.

I played the hell out of some Let's Golf. (And will again, once I get over the frustration of Hard difficulty. Really? Carolyn shot a -14 in 18 holes? That's what you're sticking with, Let's Golf? And I placed 4th with my mere -7? Okay.)

I'm still terrible at it, but I love, love, love Glyder 2. This is the game I let people fool with to show off my Pre.

I'm a poker guy, so I play a lot of WSOP Hold'em Legend (I think it's called).

Games I so far regret buying, even at 0.99: Transformers G1, Real Tennis, and the boxing game. My dislike of these games is mostly a matter of being unable to master the controls, or, in the case of T:G1, a complete lack of understanding of the point of the game. One of these days I'll try to find instructions on-line and give them another whirl.

I have those same games and feel the same way.

Gonna have to try Glyder 2 then.

Bring WarFare to WebOS!!!!

thanks for the racer mention. You should check out racer expansion pack.

spent the most time playing:
ko boxing
shrek

freebies:
mafia
farkel

Shrek Kart

why does everyone like the helicopter game so much? I didn't 'get it' on windows, and I 'get it' even less on the Pre. It has to be the most completely un-fun game I've ever played.

On to my favs...

Free:
AirTraffic Lite (NO2 WHERE IS THE FULL VERSION ALREADY!?!?!?! - I may just buy starship commander instead)
Mazer
Fall-E
Critical Mass - aka Chain Reaction 2 (requires no skill at all, but strangely addicting)

Paid:
Glyder 2 (already finished twice, probably won't play much more)
Hero Of Sparta
Transformers G1
Paratrooper

So far my fave are Critical Mass and Super KO Boxing 2!

-> BUBBLE PUZZLE (formerly called Amulet). Paid version is currently 99cents.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned this amazing game. It starts off rather unassuming, however you very quickly need to build up your accuracy to get past the higher levels. Right now there are 88 levels and more are being added every week. I was stuck on 81 for a couple of weeks and one night while dreaming I had an a-ha moment and first thing in the morning I was able to beat that level with no bubbles to spare. Ditto for the next level. You can tell a lot of thought was put into the higher levels. Some of the levels are so mindblowingly good and challenging you have to wonder how the heck the game designer came up with them.

I also really like Critical Mass. But, how the heck are people getting 30 million? I can't get past 14 million.

PradeepB

I'm more than a little dissapointed that we have not seen the Playstation emulator yet. What would really be nice is some really old school gaming. Genesis, Snes, Game Gear, Turbografx, and MAME. I had them all on my Treo 650 yet I can't get them on my Pre. Attention HOMEBREW Just give me a NEO GEO EMULATOR please!!! Metal Slug X on my Pre would be insane!

Someone claimed to have had MAME & Playstation running on the Pre a year ago, but it seems like nothing ever came of it. I can't find where anything was ever released. Does anyone know anything about either of them?

HAWX, Pribbage, Spades

i play monkey island through scumm vm.
shrek and glyder 2 are well worth the money.
anybody know of any games like
Angry Birds or Fragger on the Pre?

I have been addicted to recently:

Sky Box (This game is definitely addicting and bad ass)
All M games (M:mafia, M:vampires etc.)
Let's Golf
Card Ace: Black Jack
Bubble Puzzle

Games I hardly play:

Paratrooper
Lights Out
Driver
The Settlers
Deer hunter
Gangstar
Super KO Boxing
NOVA (God know I should be playing this, but the controls can be discouraging)
Dungeon Hunter (passed once already)

To make nova better use the reduce 10px patch.

Stickyman

Card ace and Word ace are both flawless online card games that work really really well.
Super Ko boxing
Fall-e
high on colour
brain test
chain reaction

Addicted to Plumber's Nightmare.

I'm currently playing critical mass and Lets golf the most,
monopoly some.

Just got paratrooper and I like it a lot so far. I got it on "buy an app day".

Have a bunch of others. I will buy tiger woods if goes on sale (like his career). Haven't seen HAWX mentioned much, is it not that good?

Critical Mass and Sudoku

Critical Mass is the best game hands down. The 3D games are nice but don't run well on my Sprint Pre.

Ancient Frog
Word Whirl
Word Search
Free Klondike Solitaire
Paratroopers
Zilch

These are my favs, but I have a ton.

I'm addicted to Robot Football. Probably my favorite game at the moment.

Wobble Words quick way to waste time!
Paratrooper fun to see the little guys die (pretty dark)...
Cronk what a way to waste too much time!!

Defense Warfare Rocks and NOVA is also very good especially if I can smoothout the controls.

Wish Defense Warfare would save when playing, but I'll send that question to the developer. Sorli...

I play SkyClimber, Blocked, and Wobble Words most of the time. I've tried other games but none stuck like those 3 games. I wanted to get Deer Hunter but missed out on the 99cent sale, so I'm going to wait on a sale in the future (hopefully)

I really have been amazed at the Pre's gaming potential. It's what got a few of my friends and family to pick up a Pre too.

Top Five:
> 1 Dungeon Hunter
> 2 NOVA
> 3 Shrek Kart
> 4 The Settlers
> 5 Mini Golf: Wacky Worlds

Needed:
> Battle Ship - two player mode
> Any two player game!
> Doom/Duke3D/Quake - need NOVA like controls

Would buy at lower price:
> Need for Speed Undercover - $9.99 to $6.99
> The Sims 3 - $9.99 to $6.99
> Space Shuttle/X-Plane Series - $9.99 to $6.99
> Tetris/MONOPOLY/Scrabble etc - $6.99 to $3.99

Favorites (can't pick one)
-Defensive Warfare
-Block Breaker Lite

Worth Purchase
-Need For Speed
-Sandstorm

Free Fun, wouldn't pay for it.
-SkyClimber
-The Helicopter Game
-Mazer (not well assembled but plenty of maps/options)

Used to play:
- Monopoly
- Need for Speed Undercover

Currently Playing:
- The Settlers

Hopefully multiplayer mode by internet connection will be added soon to the games listed above - at least for The Settlers.

Looking forward to:
- Bejeweled

Here's my list:

Crosswords
Endless Tripeaks
Freecell
Uno (would play it more if didn't always give me the 'too many cards' nonsense)
Abiosis (sooooo much better than Chain Reaction)
Spit (Speed has no leaderboard)
Scrabble

These are also great for waiting in lines...

i love critical mass it's addictive i play it at least once a day, i also enjoy Allin1Free even though some of the games on it are lame i like a few of them, wordbox free is kind of fun too.

This post single handedly made me spend over $10 in Pre games today. Thanks a lot guys. ;)

Really though, thanks for all the suggetions. Digging the golf games, Fall-E and Critical Mass. I have a lot of time to waste now, bye.

I don't play a lot of games (lack of time, not due to a lack of desire), so I don't usually have times for the longer more involved games like NOVA, etc. I did play Dungeon Hunter which I enjoyed. My current favorite, BY FAR, is Smiles. That game takes the Bejeweled concept and blows it out of the water. Love it! Not so concerned about the lack of Bejeweled on the Pre now... though I still am holding out hope for a version of Peggle...

I have only been playing the free games, but Bubbles!(free), critical mass, AirTraffic Lite, and R*Tycoon are the ones I play most.

Precell gets 75% of my attention (precentral homebrew, needs to be added to app catalog, imho)
Crosswords gets the rest.

Every once in a while:
X-Plane
Glyder2
Sudoku (burnt out still)
Minefield Free
Card Ace

Thanks for the thread, I have a ton of new ones to try out =)

Nicodemus

Crosswords and Solitaire Beta.

Wacky Worlds Mini Golf is perfection at a dirt cheap price and incredibly fun.

The Settlers is as addicting as The Sims or Sim City or any of those strategy games and it's cute.

Poker Drops. It's simple and cheap and I just can't stop playing it.

Word Ace. More interesting than Scrabble, more social than Wobble Words.

I should add there are others I like but I play them on my iPod. Like Sandstorm is amazing, Ancient Frog is soothing yet frustrating at the same time. The Sims. Scrabble.

I love Glyder 2, also playing Paratroopers.
