What's New in Homebrew Apps, 6 August 2009 45

by Dieter Bohn Thu, 06 Aug 2009 9:42 am EDT

There are plenty of new and updated apps in our beta Homebrew App Gallery for the Palm Pre just a day after launch.  If you've never tried it, we'll have a first-install walkthough up for you later today.  It's just a 'first-install' walkthough because your second and seventieth install are a lot easier now that fileCoaster allows you to directly browse and download from our gallery.

Longtime PalmOS users can relive the glory days of low-fi stylus-tapping action with Dope Wars, BlackBerry switchers can get that BrickBreaker feeling back, shippers can track a package (and watch the sometimes insane routes they take) with PrePackage, shoppers can put together a Shopping List, runners can help test out the fledgling PREtracker GPS/running app, and, well, you get the idea.

Oh, and people who aren't afraid of Linux access should take a look at My Tether,  which does exactly what you think it does. Don't overdo it, though, because even Sprint will get grumpy if they see you pulling down 'too much' data.

We'll help to add more features to fileCoaster (and big ups to PreGame for bearing with us) and offering a standard, open format feed for other app downloaders, so stay tuned. As always, the apps in our Homebrew Gallery are for testing, not production.

I'm extremely impressed with the homebrew community; some of the best guys you'll find this side of the interwebs.

Also impressed with the bipartisan support for both fileCoaster and PreLoad; I'm excited to see where things go from here.

A big thank you to all the developers, even of the small apps like pDice (which has made roleplaying, in combination with the pre's PDF reader, a better and portable experience).

the fileCoaster update is sweet. props to Precentral and PreGame

I agree with jcettison that it is nice to see both support for PreLoad and FileCoaster, both excellent programs!

This community is really taking off and I can not wait for the upcoming weeks!! I am so excited about Dope Wars too lol

Keep up the great work Precentral! I love what you are doing to keep us updated on these new apps. Just don't forget to blog once in a while =)

the link on the tracker app page is wrong.

Great job you guys, the new FilCoaster version is a homerun outta the ballpark app. And thanks to all others who have dedicated their time and effort to make us non-programmers happy.

I hope with the coming of the open and expanding Palm App Catalog, that the homebrew scene won't dimenish too much as I know everyone likes to get paid for their time on apps etc. I myself would rather donate to help and get 10 apps in beta (especially games that are not too critical to be perfect and bug free) this way then to pay for 1 app the other way...as my pocketbook is always the same size.

Please show step by step how to get all these wonderful homebrews for MAC. Its killing me!

Honestly with filecoaster and our homebrew section being as good as they are now, I could care less about the official app store. Just like WM I think the apps developed by our everyday users rock. And with these home brew apps we can talk with the developers and get updates faster and more frequently. I love it.

Keeps getting better and better. Great job, and thank you precentral and all the devs.

Great job Precentral.net! I just bought a Touchstone from you guys to help support the work!

These look great! Way to go everyone!

Maybe sometime I'll get to join in on the fun... (currently stalled out with OS X.4 issues)

Need the proper URL for Pre tracker. It appears to be your generic URL...thanks.

Can someone fix the link on the Pre Tracker page please?

Thanks for the App Galleries, but we seriously need an RSS Feed for new apps. Or at least be able to sort by release date!

Thanks!

Click on the Update Date in the List and you will get what you want.

Unbelievable what you guys have done with the homebrew apps page, and now with the seamless support of the latest fileCoaster update. Once you get that installed, it's just as easy as the AppStore. Many thanks.

Thanks to all the develpoers making these great apps. Work better and r nicer than the ones Palm realeased so far. Was ready to junk my pre til i found this site.

Not sure about the backup part ... but the article "What's New in Homebrew" says they're working on a "first install" walk through (like later today). So look for that, and then your first install is fileCoaster, and after that it's as easy as the App Catalog. There's also two articles in the "Homebrew Apps" forum which can help ... look for "WebOS Quick Install" or "A Simple How-to Guide".

how about a slick music player app that streams all the music off my home computer to my pre. like the spotify ipod app shown on gizmodo today?

I cant seem get the install to work... I keep getting device not found.. can anyone help?

I haven't tried installing the app, however I did have a problem with my computer and my Pre at first. I wasn't using a USB 2.0 port. I switched to one on the back of the desktop and all has been well since.

Are you in developer mode?

Can you recieve calls when you are tethering?

Grand, yes I am in developer mode. Tried on two comps... Heres my email lcota05@gmail.com . you think you could walk me through the process... Maybe I missef something. I trried on two computers and both didn't recognize my pre was connected. Thanks of you can

Because the economy is so bad, I invite you to install my job search application, Jobr. It is available in the homebrew gallery. Hopefully Jobr can do its part to get everyone back to work.

To Precentral people and Homebrew developers: You are awesome! Thanks for your hard work.

PS: Love the new app gallery.

I really want to put some of these cool apps on my phone but, don't know how. I can't wait for the step by step to appear. I will gladly pay for My Tether if it works as good as some had said.

Please post the step by step for newbies! lol

They have posted instructions - you just need to follow them. Step one is the most complicated - getting WebOS Quick Install: http://forums.precentral.net/homebrew-apps/194832-webos-quick-install-v1...

Then run WebOS Quick Install from your computer to install fileCoaster on your Pre. Once fileCoaster is installed, run it on your Pre to EASILY install everything else.

Welll I keep getting "device not found" not sure what I'm doing wrong so I'm patiently waiting for the step by step instructions....

NICE

Palm is not currently taking app submissions for the catalog. Only developers that were selected as part of the early adoption program are allowed to submit free apps.

The submissions to the App Catalog is not available yet. Also, these are beta apps and currently in development. My Dope Wars is not anywhere near being in a complete and polished enough state to put in the App Catalog. But it is usable now. Many apps are like this.

Then, there are the apps that will probably never be in the App Catalog, the My Tether, Filecoaster, these are amazing apps but might not be welcomed because of their capabilities. Another example is PrePod. The only way the functionality could get as good as it is with PrePod is if it lives in the com.palm namespace to access functionality which hasn't been opened up to third party apps yet, due to security.

The concept is awesome. Too bad I can't get past "No Device Found" Pretty sure my hardware is up-to-date. Have yet to locate the "walkthrough" and it's the day after this here posting, which states it will be posted later in the day of the 6th.

Trying to get this set up but I am not able to find the filecoaster file to download now? the link appears to be busted? Anyone have a couple they could email to dgillmer@gmail.com?

I have done everything i can find on the web including this page and continue to get no device found. Immediately following this I must close the quick install through task mangager as it prompts an end now window. any ideas or advice????? I using Windows XP
