Whither Verizon webOS 1.4.5 for the Pre Plus? Should be soon (Updated) 49

by Dieter Bohn Fri, 10 Sep 2010 1:03 pm EDT

Palm's webOS 1.4.5 update hasn't exactly had the smoothest of rollouts - arriving in Europe and Canada on July 14th, Sprint on August 11th, and the Verizon Pixi Plus on August 31st - not to mention that pesky bug that breaks some games. Meanwhile, Verizon Pre Plus and AT&T users are standing by, unable to get their Angry Birds on.

Well, Shad emailed us (and others) to let us know that somebody from Verizon corporate is telling him the update should hit in about two weeks. We've heard plenty of empty promises from mid and high-level carrier employees before, though. However rwinger in our forums points out that Verizon's very own OTA Update Information page for the Palm Pre Plus sports screenshots showing 1.4.5.

We can't have much longer to wait now, can we? This rollout stands in stark contrast to previous webOS updates that managed to hit multiple carriers in multiple countries in fairly short order. The delayed rollout on Verizon and AT&T also seems to be putting a damper on the PDK Hot Apps $1 million giveaway - if folks can't install the apps, it makes it quite a bit harder to generate buzz for the latest and greatest - only 20 days left in that contest.

Update: Shad points us to this PDF on Verizon's support site that indicates updates for 1.4.5:

webOS 1.4.5 Build 171 update includes numerous enhancements. [...]

+ Better Mobile Hotspot connectivity
- Your Palm Pre Plus can easily connect through the Mobile Hotspot application even when using Windows Vista® 64-bit with Windows LiveTM OneCare.

+ Better Web functionality
- Preview all ringtones on the Verizon Mobile Web 3.0 site.

+ Overall improved battery performance

Thanks, Shad and cantaffordit!

PALMMMMM!!

It took them 3 months to give us THAT changelog? PALLMMMM!!!

Is it me, or is Verizon's 1.4.5 update seem larger? I'm wondering if they threw something in there? If you go to the website referenced in the thread, it says 1.4.5 is 12MB, yet the Sprint update (usually there's a screenshot on the precentral website towards the bottom) says it's 8MB. This is interesting. I'm wondering if they possibly added another app?

Its probably because its for the pre plus instead of the original pre. Thats my guess. I dont know whats worse, not knowing when its going to come to verizon or having a countdown in my brain eagerly waiting for it for two weeks. Urg!!!

probably because VZW includes the MHS app.

They will likely just extend the hot apps contest to compensate.

No they won't extend the contest. No more changes.

I still believe it's not Palm's fault though.. we here in Germany got the update forever ago. I guess AT&T etc. were b**ching about the fstab bug, what else could it be?

On the AT&T side, payments from Apple to delay any updates for competing devices could explain it. They claim QA, but I claim that is BS.

...two weeks?

ughhhhhhhhh

At least you have a somewhat certain date. We on AT&T have heard NOTHING!!!!

this is getting pretty insane now. Especially with word of webOS 2.0 coming out later this year...

FINALLY! I've been missing out on all the cool new PDK apps! Can't wait to get NavIt and Angry Birds!!

Yuck!! Verizon always be a snail! always the latest release the update.. I don't know what is the problem. I bet 100% the problem is the verizon's human resources! or maybe palm's?

I already bored clicking update to wait miracles comes out.

Need more 2 weeks to release update?! ... they really show how lazy they are!! More make sense if they release newer rom rather then release same rom v1.4.5 which already long ago released on Europe GSM version.

You sir need an education...

same with you.

I could care less for the 1.4.5 update because it isn't coming with much. But I just hate coming to precentral and seeing all the new apps come out that I cant download. I hope we don't have this same problem when 2.0 comes out.

This is nuts. I hope this is not a preview of when WebOS 2.0 comes out. I have AT&T and am not feeling the love...

Help! My updates app keeps saying that I have application updates available. I don't. Any idea how I fix this so that when Verizon really does release 1.4.5 I can actually get it?

You just check again with the update app. I'm sure you will notice when 1.4.5 is actually out for you ;)

I mean, the "updates" app tells me that other apps have updates. So it takes me to the app catalog page where you update apps. Only there are no apps to update... Maybe that makes more sense.

It happens. I dont know why. Its not a problem. It will say that wether there are actually updates or not. If the app catalog says there are no updates then there are none. But they WILL show up if there is updates. When 1.4.5 does come out, you will know. It will show you. Dont panic.

It happens cause whatever app you downloaded and later deleted stays in your profile. So even though that ghost app is not there your profile thinks there is an update available for an app that you have already deleted. It does so, in case later one wants to download that app again, you shouldnt have to pay for it. However palm has not solved this bug yet. What they need to do is allow people to browse there app data in the cloud and be able to delete apps that they no longer needs.

hmmm, if you check on document properties of that pdf, it says created AUGUST 13!

Its SEPTEMBER 10 today...what the hell verizon...

you even released an update to the samsung omnia II yesterday...who still uses that???

They probably just made the graphic earlier in August. At least we know that the Verizon photoshop squad is pretty quick about their job.

C'mon AT&T...Angry Birds is calling me!!!!

well the EU o2 1.4.5 has build number 222, wonder why the later release has the smaller build number? Was it meant to arrive before the EU version originally?

Verizon said they just want to be sure its bug free before releasing? They have had more than enough time for that and then some and then some more. Any bugs were pointed out a month ago. And if they were so worried about customers having a bug free phone, they would fix their GPS "bug" wouldn't they? Feel bad for Verizon customers, Verizon just does not seem to care about customers very much.

it's reasons like these that make me wanna switch to the dark side......

iPhone? Dont do it!!!!

haha no windows 7 XD

PAAAAAAALMMM! errr, I mean, VERIIIIIIZONNNNN!!!!

*Cough*...fix for GPS?....*Cough* *Cough*

As for "Your Palm Pre Plus can easily connect through the Mobile Hotspot application even when using Windows Vista

don't hold your breath for gps fix. I don't think VZW understands why it's a problem. they don't realize that the issue isn't navigation for driving.. it's all the location-based stuff that still doesn't work right even if you pay for VZ Navigator and have it open. arghhh.

I'm hoping with this "fix" that it also works with linux - 64 bit ubuntu has tons of problems with the mifi

When the Eris and Motorola's Droid came out @ Verizon, they were different versions of Android OS. My son waited for MONTHS before the newer version of android was made available for his new Eris. Customer reps sold it to him with the promise of immediate update... advertised that way too, as I recall. Verizon is forever stuck in"turtle"....

Verizon displays 3G on the pre plus, not EV?

correct

Verizon displays 3G on the pre plus, not EV?

I dont even have a VZ pre but my friends do.. they had to buy an additional GPS bc of how borked up the VZ GPS whereas my Sprint GPS pretty much rocks (so does sprint nav).

What will it take for those, ahem, people at VZ to fix the GPS???

It will take 10 dollars a month from the user to "fix" the GPS. Something tells me our update is being held back so that Verizon can Nerf the GPS, among other things, and making changes to the code that blocks the GPS for other apps may be more time consuming than we thought.

sadly, that's probably true

Talked with Verizon, Thursday 9/9, felt like it was a friendly conversation with a knowledgeable rep, he stated the updates started on 8/31, when I told him that was for the Pixi he said the Pre would "be out soon" - went to a local radio remote today, the DJ was getting cues on what to talk about from the VZN guy, I told him "talk up the Pre Plus, it's the best handset you have" and he replyed "we're dropping that phone next month" - didn't have the heart to tell him it would still be sold as a prepaid, right?

"Overall improved battery performance" Can anyone tell me what that means?

The last time I was told by someone that something I was waiting for would be done in two weeks was when Mark Rein announced the demo for Unreal Tournament 2003 would be out "in two weeks". Safe is to say, that didn't work out too well: http://liandri.beyondunreal.com/Unreal_Tournament_2003#History

I'll believe it when I see it.

at&t just brought out a phone that reminds me much of the palm only with hard edges and really ugly the new blackberry

and there making alot of tv adds for it...the palm pre plus is so much better I wonder why blackberry is at&ts bitch and not palm...

Because it's newer

its coming on the 13th for verizon Pre Plus from an update we got today.

...and people still seriously think 2.0 will rollout b4 the end of the year.... Certainly not for VZW.
