WiFi tethering restored in new version of MyTether 44

by Derek Kessler Mon, 14 Sep 2009 5:28 pm EDT

MyTether So you’re all sorts of bummed that the leaked version of webOS 1.2 has new WiFi drivers that bust the mobile hotspot functionality of MyTether? Fear not, for homebrew developers aren’t the type to let a little code change keep them down. Even though webOS 1.2 hasn’t even been officially released, let alone announced, MyTether has received an update to version 2.0.1 that fixes the issue. The new version is available through donation only right now, though it also comes with a hand installer that gets around the whole rooting your Pre thing. Version 2.0.1 also adds in support for dashboard notifications, the ability to share your phone’s WiFi connection via USB tethering, and some more little niceties.

Thanks to Herb for the tip!

It has been version 2.0.1 for ages. The backend was updated from 1.0.1 to 1.0.2 to fix 1.2 incompatibilities. If you're a donor you don't need to wait for 1.2, you can install it now and it will just work when 1.2 rolls out.

If you use the program at all it is very worth it to donate and get the latest version. The WiFi tethering is much more refined, allowing changing the ssid, setting up encryption, and turning off the screen without sleeping the device. Plus you get all the latest updates like this one.

If we've already donated, do we need to donate again to get the new version?

how much is the donation? i ask because i am curious the amount is fairly irrelevant I have used this program so much that I feel almost obligated to donate.

Looks like a cool app, but I think I'll keep using the internal PCI-E card on my laptop.

If I start to use this as much as I normally need to be connected at client sites, I'll rape my battery and have to leave the Pre plugged into the laptop all the time, which doesn't sound to appealing.

I could see using this on occasion, if you don't want to pony up for a true separate data connection though.

At the time I donated the default donation on PayPal was just $10. The developer has been very supportive/responsive. It is totally worth it for me since my banking client blocks a lot of sites I need access to. I just connect the Pre to my Dell Mini-9. Works beautifully.

High five for having a Dell Mini 9. Best $350 I've spent in awhile, and yes, tethering the Pre and using its WiFi on it is a beautiful thing.

WOW! That was fast! I have used tethering, but not much (and always "fairly"), but also ONLY by WiFi. Losing WiFi would make it useless.

I was under the impression that Palm changed the WiFi driver to disable AdHoc completely? I wonder how this was worked around???

Hilarious. And cheers to them for the mandatory donation. Come November this'll be the first App I want, and I'd be happy to chip in for the good work, especially given the couple nice new seamless touches.

This is a great piece of software and well worth the $10 "donation". I need to tether just a few times a month and can't justify a mobile broadband account. This solves the problem beautifully. If everyone doing this keeps their self-control about bandwidth hopefully Sprint and Palm will keep looking the other way (like Verizon did for so many years).

Exactly! I need to tether very rarely, and when I do, it is just for something really important. There is no way I could possibly justify what Sprint wants for some myfi thing.... I paid for "unlimited" data for many, many years on various Treos and used almost no data.

I *really* hope that people won't abuse it.

Just to add: Sprint has also been looking the other way for quite a while. I've been tethering various forms of the Treo through third party software on Sprint for approximately 8 years now. Now if only Sprint didn't want me to pay $10/mo more for the exact same plan to "upgrade" to a pre, I might actually have renew my contract.

This has nothing to do with tethering, but...

Did anyone notice that with the keyboard slid out when the screen dims, you can press the center button to automatically wake and unlock the screen. Maybe with the new 1.2 update and indicator light function the center button will wake the device whenever the phone locks!

That feature was added with the 1.1 update.

You can do this only with the keyboard out as it's assumed you're using the keyboard.

It would be stupid for the center button to wake the screen with the keyboard closed.

Why would waking the phone with the center button with the keyboard closed be stupid? If the center button is going to glow for notifications, as detailed in the pre-release specs of 1.2, then why not press the center button to wake the screen and see your notifications?! Waking is different from unlocking!

They better be careful with "donations". Technically speaking they're making you buy the application but call it a donation (otherwise everything would be available to everyone).

Now many people do this, especially those with gaming servers ("donate for admin!") but you can still get in trouble for it if you rake in enough cash. In some states, if it's over $600 and it's not a real "donation" (i.e. you're charging for a product or service), you must pay taxes.

And this is exactly my problem with the whole "Donation" thing. if it's REALLY a donation, THEN IT IS OPTIONAL. IE: You can freely download the latest version without donating.

This is NOT THE CASE with My Tether. If you want the Updated version, YOU MUST PAY. IE: IT IS A CHARGE. It's not only dinengenuous, it's insulting to our intelligence.

Oh, and just as I predicted in the My Tether Thread Aonic has YET to update the free version and is content to sit back with his pay version disguised as a donation and put other people at risk for his own pocketbook.

It's enough to make me want to report him to Sprint's lawyers.

Get honest Aonic. Pick a side, Free or Pay. (Oh, and we BOTH know it's going to have to be Free, for the reasons stated by Kasracer. Stop putting the community at risk. Open Source your program and let people donate.)

I just want to get webos 1.2, I really could care less about Itunes media sync since apple will just break it again *sigh*

Do you still have to root your phone with this new version? Thanks.

you never had to root your Pre for this.. My question is this article is from today but on the website the version is listed as 2.0.1 but i think it's been this version for well over a month..

My question is when did 2.0.1 come out? and how can you find out what version you have?

Yeah, I thought 2.0.1 had been out a while, also. I am confused.

As for the "donation" thing, I kinda agree. It isn't a donation if it is required. It is a free crippleware and a paid non-crippleware. Not that I don't think he is doing a great job *AND* should be rewarded *AND* the price is reasonable... I just find it hard to swallow the concept of calling it a "donation".

To see what version you have click the launch icon on your launch bar, then from the launcher menu select 'List Apps...'. Scroll until you see MyTether and note the version number.

good looking out rlopin.. didnt know that was there.. I'm still wondering why this supposedly new version 2.0.1 was listed as the same version on aug 6th? Can't tell if theres been an update done to it or not..

As far as the donations thing i am almost certain aonic is doing this to avoid negative legal ramifications somewhere down the line. Ask anyone that deals with escorts.. they call their payment the same thing. I guess if you get your payment your selling services but if you get a donation its free but someone is tipping you or donating to your entity.

I havent had any problems with aonic and myteher.. it is convoluted trying to figure out things at first, I agree on that but once you find a good link, thread on how-to its easy.

I have mytether installed..what risk are you talkin bout

holy crap! This just works. I recommend it! Life is gonna be sweet! no more trying to find free wifi. BTW i just stumbled along the mac installer instructions. (i had the sdk already installed a while ago) and everything just worked i was thoroughly impressed.

This is the best application. Got it this weekend for a $15 donation. Love it!

I agree with "Bishounen" on the donation issue. I don't have an issue with a donation... I do have an issue with "Aonic" and the entire way he/she has set up his forum.. the maze you must traverse to QUOTE DONATE... and (I did register in his forum - to see what his donators (AKA - purchasers thought). In the forum I see a lot of dissatisfaction regarding donating/paying and still waiting for the app. THen there's the "You can't look unless you pay corner of his web site... jezzzz!"

I also find it frustratingly curious that Precentral is accommodating Aonic's behavior.

PRECENTRAL stop buying in (DONATING IN :^) ) to Aonic's nonsense... tell Aonic that if he wants his app advertised on PRECENTRAL donation MUST MEAN DONATION. If you do that.... I bet you will soon see that MyTether becomes truly donation based (FREE w/suggested donation)... Many will be pleased enough to willingly donate to a (I must admit) great app.. Aonic will still get his/her financial motivations fed... and PRECENTRAL will gain further legitimacy.

You are right on!!!

Well said.

PreCentral needs to stop promoting My Tether until Aonic stops being a prick about it and either makes the donation actually optional, or sets up a proper storefront for purchasing and downloading My Tether.

Pricks should be shunned until their behavior improves.

In the meantime I suspect the field is wide open for an enterprising programmer wanting to make a Tether program, as Aonic is so far proving himself unworthy of the Palm Pre community.

wow! chrisgloor, is showing how bright it is.... to donate to an app that may or may not work for the device/phone....sure DONATE first, then if for some reason it dont no matter what....then ppl it dont work for, whats the issue then....i mean, it probly works for you, but it dont mean it'll work for the next person.....so in that since, why donate to an issue that probably cant be fixed???? i say DONATE if it works for ya....if not, then you are not at a loss in money....EVEN THOUGH it maybe be only 10-15 bucks.

wow.. everyone has a different opinion about this... I think that what he's trying to do is "sell" the app, but not get in trouble with PALM for selling apps to pre users outside of the app catalog. I dont think that the SDK agreement gives him the right to "sell" the app, and that's why he's calling it "donation".

With that said, I agree that the donation should be completely OPTIONAL, until his application hits the official app catalog, or keep it truly donation based..

His app will never hit the official app catalog who are you trying to kid, neither sprint or palm want anyone to have a application like this.. as for donations.. he has a functional free version of the app which he doesn't owe to anyone and can pull at anytime... so yes getting the other version is definitely optional. indeed hence the term donation. as a thank you it opens the doors to his private forum which has instructions on getting new version. as mentioned earlier.. people posting in his public forum talking about not having the app after donating.. mind you not each one of them is user error! and i would like to say i bet most if not all of those users have been contacted to and given access to the donor forum and have mytether functioning.. as for you all looking for a version change... mytether the app has not changed so there is no need for a version change his service has been updated so if you want a version change look into the service...

Ill gladly "donate" to this. WHat the hell is it to guys what he does with the cash, BUNCH OF HATERS!!! This app is the BEST app EVER!! And I will GLADLY donate for the newest version! So STFU!!!

About Sprint turning an eye on tethering, I'd have call that a false statement cause i've been doing it with my sanyo katana. To do this I had to download software from Sprint and install it on my laptop. So how exactly is Sprint "overlooking" this when they provided me with the software to do it?

question: I'm using an apple laptop (macbook pro) do i need to install an app on my computer too (does it come in apple flavor)? and if so where do i get it?
Also, in on the Bell mobility network I don't know if that will affect anything just thought I might mention this before I spend my pretty pennies on this app :))?
Thx in advance for your help.

DO NOT PAY FOR THE DONATION. I PAID FOR THIS APP AND NEVER GOT A THE APPLICATION. I JUST LOST my 14.95 which I paid over 1 week ago!

How can I get tether with making a donation

$14.95 is too much for this app ....

Is mytether back online for OS 1.3.1? If so how much do i need to donate and how do i obtain it?

Below is my reply... Not fully to you, but it does address some things you asked. 14.95 the last time I checked, and look below for other things. He/she just posted in his forum like yesterday...

It works for me for 1.3.5.1 I'm using it now. It needs a patch for now to break the camera to get wifi to work, but after the 1st installation, it goes pretty quickly. Only downside is u have 2 restart the pre... not so quick. But he is working on one that doesn't need patching, and has it for beta testing, so it is really getting there. Don't be so mean, just think of it as paying for the thing to work, and you won't have any problems "donating". It works for me on my many roadtrips, so my investment works. Me being able to use this app for less than half a month is worth it, and I've been using it since the 1st time an update broke the free version. Once you donate, he/she (think I saw aonic say he's a he...but for now, I'll just be gender neutral) will allow you to log in to his donor site, and install easily with an installer. No More Work rooting and all that crap. But Doesn't the Free version work with usb? He gave this donor site as a gift to ppl who donated, and someone told everyone about the site, and now ppl are mad about having to donate. He said ppl weren't supposed to know about the donor site, it was just supposed to be a perk to ppl who donated. Well, so much for that. Using wifi tethering now, about 2 watch a show... But I don't abuse it. Have wifi @ my house. AND before you download it, he does state the risks, and they are totally fixable when you disable the patch, which can be done directly through the app... so yeah, I don't mind the camera thing if I can surf the net. I do youtube on my iPod touch anyway, cuz it's wifi sux @ picking up signal. Pre and laptop can pick up the signal in my room, and I had to move the router and modem closer to my room to get it to work w/o tethering. BETTER battery life too. My phone now charges, and gains power when using tethering.Doesn't kill the battery like b4. I think it's worth it, and he IS working on it. This app will NEVER make it into the app catalog, so he can't get it to be a paid app. At least he provides a free version, just think of it as a demo to the real deal... This app is good enough to be a paid app, but Sprint would never want an app like this out when they can charge for a mifi or something like that. He can't list it as paid, b/c app catalog can't accept it...Just saying...

I am having issues getting my Tether to work and I would VERY much appreciate someone taking a moment to do a little hand holding for me and walk me through this. If this isnt to big a favor to request, please contact me at brady(dot)holcomb (at) gmail(dot)com. Thank you for your consideration!!! FYI: I have made the donation at mytether but I have unable to get assistance. Thank you again!

I am sorry if this is dumb question, but does it work on the Pixi?
