Will you be getting a TouchPad? [poll] 186

by Derek Kessler Thu, 09 Jun 2011 10:50 am EDT

Now that we finally have an official release date and pricing for the HP TouchPad, there's a question we have to ask: are you going to be getting one? As a refresher: The TouchPad will be available July 1st in the USA, a few days later in parts of Europe, and then in selected countries across the globe later in the year. Pricing is set at $499.99 for the 16GB, $599.99 for 32GB, and pre-orders for the US and Europe begin on June 19th.

How about adding a Don't want/need a tablet option?

Then it's not the tablet for you. :P

That implies that there IS a tablet for you. When in fact, some people just don't want one, or even care.

Granted, there are some people who would like using a tablet due to it being larger than their phone, and easier on the eyes. Phone = necessity, tablet = novelty. I wish HP would take care of the necessity before novelty.

For HP, having a successful tablet is a necessity. It's not about you.

Wait so my Pre is a necessity?

My high school econ teacher would argue that maybe in this day, a basic cell phone is a necessity for most of the 1st world public. I am certain NFSU, Angry Birds, etc, are not necessities.

I put down "Not the tablet for me", but you didn't have a chose for "My wife bought me an iPad2 last week for our annivesary so I'll be holding off on a new tablet indefinitely."

I have to say the apps are awesome for the iPad. If the TP can get the top apps, then I think it will do well. Now that I've played with the iPad for a week and downloaded a bunch of apps, I can't see myself using a TP unless it had the same apps.

I do really miss gestures, but the TP doesn't have them either! Also, the notification system on iOS is the suck!

Beep. :-)

Not quite true. It doesn't use a dedicated gesture area (mistake IMHO - that bezel area could have been useful) - but it does support a fair subset of gestures.

Might want to avoid calling it "TP".

Not a good idea to start calling it "Toilet Paper", at least until you try it out.

Or a "Don't get the whole tablet thing" option. :)

That should be, "Not at that pricing!"

After all, if it was 50 bucks you know you'd buy it whether you wanted one or not!

True.

But 50 bucks is not a realistic option - therefore irrelevant.

I was looking for the: I will get one when they announce a pre3 or better on Sprint. Then I can move forward. Until that happens, I cannot buy one. Leaving Sprint is not really an option for me now. Listen up HP/Sprint. Get something done!

i was looking for the same option.

i will leave sprint for the pre 3 but i need to know what the status is and what carriers the pre3 will be on and when before i make the decision to buy the touchpad -i planned on buying them both and having the pc option as well.

they must be holding the pre3 back to get more sales on the veer but i was there at launch day for my pre- and still waiting

at least give us an idea of what and where it will be

I don't believe they hold the Pre3 back - least of all for the Veer. These 2 models appeal to different groups - not in competition.

The Pre3 is either not ready (software-wise) or it's a matter of carrier demands. Or certain apps they want to have ready when the Pre3 launches.

Seriously! Carrier is definitely a major issue. Not to mention there is still a nothing from Mark/Space about a missing sync for 2.0 and above. I will get a tablet of some sort if I can have one on Sprint that syncs with my Mac and can run Slingplayer. I suspect that means I'm more likely to get an iPad or Android tablet at some point in the future. I find it ironic that I keep a Treo755 as a second phone because it has those capabilities and none of these new devices do. Will be even more frustrating if Sprint does get a Pre3 and it can't do something as simple as sync directly with iCal when my 5 year old brick Treo can.

Same here.

If I were to buy a Tablet the TP would probably be my choice.

But if I want a smallscreen device I'd actually prefer a netbook (yes - that old lame tech from a couple years ago).

A Linux powered Netbook has more more utility for my needs (Movies while traveling, browsing, programming) than any tablet available and costs much less.

Acer just announced 3 Netbooks with pre-installed Ubuntu Linux. I'll probably get one of those.

A tablet would of course be a nice luxury to also have - but at 480+ Euros is way to costly to get just for fun, when I can get a Netbook for half of that - *and* have a more powerful system.

I very much want a WebOS tablet, but I was really hoping that they'd offer the Touchpad in multiple sizes. I've always found the iPad to be way too big, and would much prefer a 7" tablet.

How about a "I will get one if a Pre 3 is announced on Sprint in the next 24 hours" option? :-p

Very much this. I'll either be all in with a Pre3 and Touchpad and all the bells and whistles, or not. It depends on the phone getting picked up on Sprint.

Waiting on Sprint here too.

I don't have sprint, and I don't plan on switching to sprint, but the only way I'm getting a TouchPad is if the Pre 3 is announced on Sprint in the next 24 hours.

16 hours left

*cue 24 countdown ticker*

Eh, I decided I'm getting the 32GB TP, and if the Pre 3 doesn't come to Sprint I jump to an Android phone but still get to keep webOS in tablet form. Then I can just wait it out until they get the hardware I want on Sprint.

Fair point, but for myself and I imagine a lot of users, the phone is a "need" whereas the tablet is more of a "want." And with the TouchPad and Pre3 being billed as such complementary devices, a lot of folks are going to hold off on the "want" until they find out where the contract-reliant "need" is going to land.

I'm glad I am far from alone on this feeling.... HP and Sprint have to get something done (and announced soon). Not doing so is not going to help them penetrate a very tough and crowded tablet market. All who still clutch legacy webOS hardware are evangelists just waiting to steer friends, family and even strangers in the webOS direction. I quit doing that over a year ago despite my love for webOS. There might not be that many of us left but we are valuable.

According to your logic they need to sell it via Verizon - not Sprint (well - all of them would be best of course).

We're nice to have as an early base of likely customers - but not that valuable.

1-3 % of the market share is way better than 0.

But I'm sure they plan to get to 10 % ASAP (sometime next year I guess) - and of that we're just a small part anyway.

A huge +1 to this. I _want_ a WiFi + Sprint TouchPad & a Sprint Pre3. I'll _settle_ for a WiFi Touchpad + a Sprint Pre3. I might _consider_ a WiFi Touchpad + VZW Pre3. I change platforms if AT&T is the only carrier option.

Dang dog - I have never hit the PLUS 14 mark - congratulation. You hit it on the head.

I'm in this camp as well. I would really prefer to have my phone and tablet using the same OS, and it only makes sense with the Pre3 - TP combo since they are designed to work together.

However, I also have the added complexity of figuring out if my next employer will support WebOS as my work phone. That's one reason why I think the Pre 3 is so important to the TouchPad. Many people who get tablets have smartphones and they will naturally be drawn to the same OS as they use for the phone. Likewise, if my next employer only supports BB/iPhone (which I think is the case), I might make the full switch to iPhone - iPad rather than mixing OS's.

It's amazing how many seem to still be waiting on Sprint. HP stuck a fork in you guys long ago.

So THAT's why my back's been stinging?!

Yeah id stop the wait.. jump in with the veer man. lovely little device.

I think the Veer is frickin' awesome. It's got some elements that don't work as well for me, though.

Although I wish I had a chance to scoop it up when Amazon had that crazy, no-contract discount going on.

What about HP take a look on the world map and see that it is another countries around the world. Im so pissed right now. If only HP would be smart and release it to the hole world! That would be nice! But no, "we are not going to support you!" You lost a many costumers HP! Good choice!

Have you ever seen a product simultaneously released to the entire world?

I think hitting 5 major countries within a week is pretty good start.

I don't know what country you are in, but I am guessing you will be able to get your hands on one if you are in Europe.

Yup. Launching here in Europe within days is much better than the months we had to wait in 09.

Or a "Prefer an improved phone" option?

in a poll about a tablet?

But the tablet is just a bigger phone so it makes sense.

Is it? Can you make phone calls on it without it being paired to a phone, or using Skype?

Remember, when the iPad was first announced, people said "It's a big iPod Touch"--not, for the most part, a big iPhone.

Even Smartphones aren't phones - let alone the tablets.

A smartphone is a mobile computer that also allows you to make calls.

Phone functionality peaked in dumbphones. If you're just interested in making calls then dumbphones are *better* at that than smartphones.

(better bang for buck, better battery life, dedicated phone keyboard that you can use without even looking at it).

Smart"phone" is a misleading label.

Sorry, but I already have a Touchsmart laptop that gives me everything I need - touch screen, tablet, pen/handwriting ability. Plus full featured Windows 7. WHAT I NEED IS THE PRE3. Geez can we get more definitive information on THAT release?

Then comment on a article about the phone. Otherwise keep your comments related to this poll/tablet.

I think his comment is kinda self explanatory on what he thinks of this poll/tablet.

No. All I want out of webos is a phone in the treo/centro/pixi form factor with up to date hardware. Until I get one, I will stick with my pixi. I have no use for a tablet, but I wish them good luck.

You should wish them good luck. If the TP doesn't work out with them, you can forget about a future webOS phone.

totally.

Ffs again not in my country, HP Touchpad is doomed to fail like this..... if it takes even longer too push out the tablet to certain countries in the world its already bypassed by the quad-core beautyness and things like that.. with Android tablets or an ipad 3 or something like that...

Im dissappointed HP

+1

Again not here in Austria too.

Come on HP, you're the biggest hardware-producer in the world! I can buy HP-products in almost every f***ing store here in Austria. Why not the TP?

Yeah here in the Netherlands too :S our dutch "Palm" site is still on the first gen Pre :S

Im really dissappointed with this...

In the Nordics the Palm site still advertises Treos and Centros.

But as this is not a carrier controlled device and the app store will be open on 3.0 I see no problem ordering it from the UK store and having it delivered to Sweden. Same as the unlocked Pre2, except now the app store will work.

Thank you for this. If you can live with the qwerty keyboard and English OS, there is no reason you can't use this in any country.

*sigh*...Switzerland. Once again NOT available. Even the Pre 2 isn't yet.

Oh what's the problem. We use the same language as germany, so what is left to do? I don't need "just type" translated to "eifach töggele" or whatever. Ask at least one of the three main carriers

There is a shop I'm sure it will import the TP from germany, also the veer. But there has to be a dataplan for the device. I don't want to pay the full price.

Well, what am I talking about dataplan. It's pathetic. The TP will be WiFi only...and the mobile internet version...probably..in the coming months.

The Pre 3 isn't even in sight and everything that looked special on February 9 is gone or copied by the competition. iOS 5, RIM etc.

*sigh* I'm still stucked on WebOS 1.4

But hey "We are the biggest PC manufacturer in the world"

Nice for them...

I wonder if we preorder on June 19th, if it'll for sure be delivered before or on July 1st. Would hate to preorder and then wait a week for shipping after July 1st when I could go get it day 1 in a retail store..

Update: Confirmed from HP Rep they won't actually ship until July 1st if you preorder but you'll get free shipping and the only way to get an extended warranty is directly through them in this manner.

I'm not considering the Touchpad until a webOS phone is announced on Sprint. If they were smart, they would announce something before the EVO 3D and Galaxy S2 are released...

Agreed, if they don't announce the Pre3 before the EVO 3D is out, I'm going to have to say goodbye to webOS. I love it but I have been eligible for an upgrade for months and my Pre is sooo slow.

Go for an off contract phone. Craigslist or ebay. just check the esn (if CDMA carrier) before you pay to make sure it is good. I would go for craigslist since you can try to activate before you pay.

for me it's honestly gonna depend on the Reviews.... So Derek, Be Honest. :-P I will seriously be judging this device on how the reviews on it go. other wise i guess i'll wait for gen2 or buckle and get the dreaded iPad2. :-(

Does it sync and send texts/calls with the Pre-?

maybe with blue tooth. but if you have a pre- like me you have sprint and you can use google voice to do all that. its pretty awesome

I've got google voice, I'm just afraid to port my main number over to gv. Do you have a computer client that gives you notifications when you receive a text/call?

If you are on sprint, It's not the same as Port your number to google. It works the same but without any cancelling of contracts like the Port does. There is no computer client for google voice. The Terms of Service don't allow it. (Not allowed to automate your interaction with google voice) That also is why there is no API released so developers can make one. I just use the website to get my texts. Also the voice plugin for gtalk lets me receive my phone calls on my computer as long as I have a gmail window open while signed into gtalk.

There also is the option to get your texts sent to you as an email. that way you can have a program that notifies you of emails. You can even respond to the texts by replying by email.

Maybe, if:

It has netflix.
It has hulu.
It has books.
It has magazines (have you used the Business Week app? It's tremendous)
It has outstanding battery life.

But even still, maybe. I know WebOS is great, I love when it works on my pre-, but I just don't see what makes this better than existing tablets. I didn't buy one of those and I probably won't buy this.

Give me a new phone already!

Sounds like you want an ipad.

and don't forget the playboy magazine too

Things TP is better at than IPad:

* Flash
* Multitasking
* USB
* Touchstone
* Notifications (even after IOS 5 catches up a lot)
* more open

I didn't list TTS because I believe IOS Apps offer various ways to "bump" information over to another device.

Of course IPad is way ahead on Apps and YMMV with above list depending on what your personal preferences are - but objectively these are features where TP is better than existing tablets (OK, Android Tablets also have flash and some offer USB).

We'll have to see about the battery life - I'm very curious about that myself. It will have books (Kindle app) and magazines - both were announced and shown even back in february.
Dunno about Hulu, Netflix. Hulu is avaiable via web page - isn't it? (Not available where I live)

I'm going to wait and see how everything goes first.

I'm not going to be an early adopter again and then have announced features never appear.

I will also be closely monitoring the apps that are released for webOS 3.x before I purchase one of these devices - Touchpad or Pre³ (assuming it makes it to Sprint).

I will be getting the 32gb version and pre-ordering the TouchPad on June 19th. Even though the release date is a little later than I had hoped and anticipated, it will be worth the extra few weeks of waiting. It is nice to finally have a date! I can't wait!

I understand getting a tablet with GPS, but without? I'll wait for the AT&T version.

I don't understand getting one with GPS :P Plan on going geocaching with it? Wifi will pinpoint you well enough for most apps.

Same here. What do I need GPS on my tablet for?

Honest question.

Have they said that only the cellular version will have GPS or are you just guessing that it's like the iPad where only the 3G version has GPS?

Check the specs on their website. The cellular version has A-GPS.

I'll wait for reviews before getting the 16G version.

How about a poll on where you are going to buy it from?

Thinking Best Buy would be a good option.

Depends on the question: Can I use it for work? I.E., i need a vpn client (build in as far as i know) shell (like "terminal" in gnome or "konsole" in KDE) and and SSH-Client at least .

There is a VPN client on WebOS 2 so I am pretty sure the tablet would have it as well. I am not sure about SSH or shell but you can always setup Citrix receiver for those applications.

Similar. My workplace uses tunneling software called Aventail Connect. There is a client which works on Ubuntu, so I think there is at least some hope for getting it working on webOS. They don't let us on the wifi though ("it's for guests"), so I'd probably have to tether it to my phone. Tablet -> wifi -> phone -> data -> cell tower -> Sprint equipment -> public internet -> company firewall -> back to my office workstation. With VPN wrapped around it. Stupid company IT policy.

The other thing missing for work is a way to pipe output to a video projector.

I'd love to say yes, but I *still* don't know if it meets our corporate security requirements. . .

It's a linux based system. I'm sure SHH will be available via Preware in no time.

It's been available on Pre for ages.

Same goes for terminal.

I hope that there will be a follow-up release detailing the additional apps that will be avaialable for the Touchpad.

I really want a webOS tablet but I'm having trouble being able to see how the future will be with webOS. I need certain apps to be available to the OS before I can commit 2k. A different operating system has Teamviewer, Logmein and now Spiceworks. I so want the ability to multi-task on my tablet so that information can be transferred from the tablet to the remote PC. a very very tough decision

I really want one but I just dont see how I can justify it for 32G. That's not even enough to capture my music library. If Im going to carry this where ever i go i want all of my music. not a subset. plus a movie or two, pictures, it just seems like 32g makes no sense.

put your music on the cloud.

32GB of music at about 1MB/minute is about 533 hours of music, or more than 22 days of consecutive, non-repeating playback. How much of that do you really listen to?

Just convinced the company I work with to order me the 32GB once they start taking preorders. I wish it would come out a little sooner so I could have it on the trip I am taking for the 4th of July weekend.

How did you approach your company? Give us tips so we can try with our Managers? :)

Derek, can we do a poll to see how many people are waiting for the pre 3.
I'm curious to know if i'm the only one running out of patience and looking more and more at the EVO 3D with its June launch date.

You need a poll to figure this out?

32 is plenty when you use the cloud for storage too. Plenty of apps do that, in addition HP it was integrating that too, didn't they? (could be mistaken)

Depends on UK pricing.

£399 and £479 same as respective iPad2's. But still massively more expensive than the US. At current exchange rates thats $637 and $764.

That's $138/$165 more expensive.

Think I'll wait till I next visit the land of the Free.

its supposed to be $499 = 304.62 BP + 20% VAT which is 364 British Pounds.
if its more than that i'm not getting it ,its more likely to be 499 pounds

Comparing the prices based on exchange rate makes no sense - unless you are actually ordering between US and UK. For price comparisons PPP gets you better comparisons. The exchange rate fluctuates a lot and has not much to do with local prices.

And please note that US prices *exclude* sales tax.
Dunno how that is usually handled in the UK - but here in Germany consumer prices *include* VAT (similar to sales tax).

So even if the exchange rate conversion would make sense you have to subtract the VAT/sales tax from your local price. IIRC UK also has 19%?

That means the net price is 399 /119 *100 = 335.29.

335.29 * 1.39 (UK US exchange rate) = 466.05.

I voted "not the tablet for me" They could chop off 2 or 3 hundred and I still wouldn't have much desire for a TP.

I only keep an ipad 2 mainly for my daughter to use as well. But with iOS 5, it's starting to become compelling. Airplay mirroring, gestures, improved safari, Newstand, improved notifications, iCloud, iMessage, etc.

There's not a great reason to buy a Touchpad given webOS is a going concern and pales in comparison with the competition. Best to wait a year or two to see what HP can do but by then windows 8 will be out.

I'm more interested in the Pre 3 or a webOS slab phone.

You mean iOS becoming more like WebOS is what sounds good.

WebOS lacks in way too many features. No ecosystem. Nothing on the cloud front that we've heard much about. Not to mention all the bugs and lag. At least the potential is still there.

As a consumer, an ipad is much better. As a business user, i'll stick with a light laptop unless windows 8 makes a tablet viable.

I still prefer webos over IOS 5. Mainly because I use Linux so I don't have a computer that runs iTunes, which of course is required for any IOS product. However the thickness of the touchpad compared to the ipad2 does not seem very appealing.

I'm also more interested in a new webos phone over this touchpad because I've been using this webos pre minus for 2 years now and it's falling apart on me.

Doesn't seem like iOS 5 is that dependent on itunes anymore. It's more of a media sync or mgmt tool now.

If I don't need Itunes to activate/backup/restore IOS 5 then what's left for IOS to do better than WebOS?

IOS does multitasking. I don't know if i care if it's in a card or Icon format.

If HP can put WebOS on Sprint then at least WebOS will have that advantage.

Android has widgets... webos does not.
Android can go into landscape mode.... Webos can not (thanks physical keyboard).

Someone please tell me what we are waiting for if the competition has already surpassed?

The only thing (for me) that webOS does better out of the box is use a touchstone. It's the only thing I miss about the Pre and the new TS for the TouchPad is wicked cool.

Considering the battery life on the iPad 2, we charge it about once every 3-4 days with heavy use (shared between 2 adults and a child), the TS is really not an issue. Still, I wouldn't mind having that capability.

Oh, and I'm waiting for a Pre 3 also.

**** yes.

For the people who are complain about the Touchpad not be released in their area, can they please state where they are? I'm curious.

In Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Austria and many countries in Europe, Asia.... Now I must buy a iPad.... I was really into WebOS and then HP destroy´d my dream.....

Poland.
TP nor Pre are not even mentioned on HP webpage. There are only HP Home and Compaq Home notebooks under "notebooks and tablets" menu.

So it's 100 Bucks for 16GB of flash-storage? Must be made out of unicorn-teeth...

It's gonna be like the Pre all over again - a million people standing by te sidelines, going "I'll only get it if a million people get it first!".

Then nobody buys it because nobody is buying it because nobody is buying it, and everybody says what a bummer, gonna get an iPad because people buy that - because nobody ever said "I'll buy it if a million people buy it first". They just went and bought it.

Not exactly. They'll probably we waiting to see what kind of apps and ecosystem develops.

But lots of us ran out and bought the Pre (often multiple, I picked up 4 myself) on launch day. So much so that Sprint was happy with sales...until the returns started rolling in.

No, it didn't have lines like the iPhone or whatever, but it wasn't exactly an "everyone waiting to see if everyone else will buy it" situation.

Yup. Exactly the same as what happened with Android when it came out and Apple was already well established.

Err - no - wait - something is wrong with our assumptions here.

The Pre had weak marketing, hardware issues and was exclusively launched on the smallest carrier. And then Palm had not much resources left to recover from that weak start.

All these parameters have changed.
Better hardware, more complete OS, more apps, wider launch and way more resources and credibility with HP behind it.

Nothing is the same.

It might fail - but just assuming that things will be the same when almost everything is different makes no sense.

And Android proved that you can come late, have a lot of cynical reviewers declare you dead on arrival (feel free to google early Android reviews from a couple years ago) and still explode and topple the top guy.

Heck - I know people who bought Samsungs Bada based phones.

From somebody who bought a Palm Pre Minus on launch day: there is only one worthy tablet out there right now, and that's the iPad 2.

Not a troll, just a fact. I don't have one or want one, but if I wanted a tablet on 7/1/2011, it would be an iPad 2.

I have an iPad and just won an iPad2.....This is awesome cause i can give them to my kids so they don't mess with my TouchPad.

Why? Because I can't stand the iPad. The #1 thing I want to do with a tablet is the internet.
The iPad is the worst tablet on the market for surfing the net. I got so frustrated with the ipad i quit using it, handed it to my kids and have not touched it in 3 months.

I bought a transformer for $399.99 and it works great for web surfing. The native browser is great however there are other options as well. It supports flash and with 1 gb of memory it works fine with most blogs (where safari on my ipad would crash due to low memory).

I Voted Not at this price point as I think either the price should be lower than ipad or they should bundle touch stone dock and a cover for this price.

So you want a tablet that has a less featured, slower browser than the ipad? Ok...

You should wait for windows 8.

By less featured you mean the ability to view flash and go to ANY site on the internet I want to go to? Is that what you mean by less featured?

And where are you basing the comment of slower on? Just as I thought, making it up.

You only come to this site to post negative comments.
Get a life already.

If i just cheerlead like you will i have a life then? :P

Flash is just one feature and it remains to be seen if this doesn't cause more problems than not. You do realize how barebones the browser will be on the Touchpad right?

Slower is based on seeing demos.

Not a fact - just an opinion.

There's already too many people around who can't see the difference between their personal opinion and a fact.

I agree with the others, above. I voted "Not sure yet", not because of any doubt about the touchpad, but for the need for me to have a tablet. If I get a tablet, this will be it. To say "Not the tablet for me" implies that I WILL be getting something else, and I am definitely not.

Either way, it's going to be an exciting summer with this AND new phones on the way. I hope that by September, EVERY webOS fan on EVERY network has something new and shiny made by HP in their hands!

At $599 (**** AT&T btw, wifi only for me thanks) it seems like a non-starter. Do you know how much laptop you can get for $600? What the **** can a tablet do that you can't do with a laptop better and faster? These things just don't make any sense to me. They would make a lot more sense in the $100 range.

- Will not be getting a TouchPad until AFTER my phone is replaced - preferably with Pre3.

- Will not be getting a TouchPad if Pre3 is not available on Sprint

- Will not switch carriers for a TouchPad - no Sprint versions, no TouchPad

- Will not be a guinea pig again like I was for Pre Minus - let someone else try it out first this time

- X - Will not because I was forced to purchase an iPad by my company due to our customers requirements.

However, still will go drool over it at Best Buy so bring some Sani-Wipes with you.

I already "made things right", no room in my tablet sleeve for a chunky, less capable Touchpad. There is a silver lining to HP pooping on WebOS users, a lot of great alternatives.

Things IPad is more capable at than TP:
* Apps
* Accessories

Things TP is more capable at than IPad:
* Almost everything else.

I would agree that Apps count for a lot.
Depending on what one prefers and what's available at launch many might consider IPad more capable for that reason alone.

But for somebody who is satisfied with the selection of apps available next month - TP is actually and I think objectively - the more capable Tablet.

And as the success of Android proved - the App market can explode fairly quickly under the right circumstances. we'll see by the end of the year whether HP created the right circumstances for a fast growing app market. They no doubt have more tools to get there than Palm had.

I'm not jumping for it until I am able to try it in a store. I want to see how well Flash works on it and it needs to have Netflix capability!!!

LOL....less than 50 percent of people on an ENTHUSIAST site say they'll get it.

That bodes GREAT for mainstream buyers.

I'd say in reality it will be less than that. The return rate will be high as well.

Remember, Precentral had like 10 Veer buyers after a full week. That was pretty pathetic given it was the first new device in months.

Not really.

While this site is thick with webos enthusiasts (but also an insane number of naysayers) - the geek power user is strong in us.

Veer is not made for the typical Precentral member.

Veer is targeted at people who don't visit forums - let alone create accounts there.

Assuming there's no big hardware issues I expect return rates to be low.

The TP is priced the same as IPad. Therefore anybody willing to spend that money and also interested in an IPad will just get the IPad. Somebody who looks for biggest possible selection of Apps has already bought or is likely to buy an IPad or Android tablet.

Anybody who buys the TP had reasons to prefer that over the alternatives who are far ahead in Apps.

As it stands now, about 48% say that they will absolutely get one of the WiFi models, 2% say they're waiting for AT&T (that totals 50% there), and about 28% say that they're not sure. That's a lot more positive than you're making it out to be.

Not until the price drops significantly.

3 weeks!

I voted not sure as I am really not sure I want a tablet at all. The only compelling reason for me getting something smaller than my laptop is teleworking and for that I would currently need a netbook. The other uses would be more entertainment based (ebooks, video etc) and for that I think I want something smaller. Maybe the fabled 7" TouchPad will meet that need, if I can afford it. I see all these people on the train with their iPads and they look so big and clunky.

hey yall up swip on touch pad is back check this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_-QCRYJ3bvg

I could careless for these stupid tablets.
GIMME THE NEW PRE!!

I wont get anything unless I can get a new webOS phone on sprint. Evo 3D is just days away. We really need to hear something.

I am highly considering the Evo 3D in sprint.

I have also been a Sprint Palm Pre day one customer and now that I am off contract I can't see myself buying any WebOS devices, especially since WebOS has a limited app marketplace and the first tablet release is WIFI only.

Plan to use it as alternative to road warrior alternative to laptop for short trips, kindle reading and family room browsing device. Hoping for some HP Employee incentive pricing!!!

I think I will wait till the TP2 or TP3, when they work out all the bugs. Palm never puts out good hardware on the first go.

Good thing it's HP and not Palm.

Hi,
Before buying I would like to know:
- are there any Office-like package already working on TP (i.e. full functional Quick Office?);
- is there possibility to "beam" files (photos, documents, mp3s) between TP and other devices like it was in old palms or most phones?
- is/will be a version with screen which doesn't look like a mirror? (what I need is a non-reflective screen)

- does it have support for writing non-English letters (i.e. Polish special characters)...

AFAIK...

- Quick Office comes pre-installed (pro version), this was announced in Feb and reiterated many times hence.
- Bluetooth transfer works just like any other tablet or laptop.
- Non-reflective screen covers should be available after launch (3rd party ipad versions should work since the screen is same dimension)
- No idea

With regard to Bluetooth you are sadly wrong.

OBEX (file transfer) was never supported for Pre and I have yet to see any indication they fixed that at last on the TP.

That's actually a pet peeve of mine.
webos is based on a Linux Kernel. The OBEX profile has been available on Linux for years (runs fine on my Ubuntu Laptop here and I used it many times to move pictures from my old dumbphone).

The OBEX support is already there - for free. I don't get why they don't support it for webos.

With Palm it might have been lack of developer resources. But HP should have no problem assigning a dev for a couple of days to enable that.

sigh

Really people? Complaints again. Could you have some sanctification or something? God knows they are doing everything they could to satisfy you.

Except they're not.

Not only do I agree with you - I like your name.
Any relation to a popular YouTube series? :-)

As much as I would like to have said yes, I just can't spare the money now. The sad thing is I am shopping for a used iPad, or possibly a low end android device. Not for myself but for my son with a hearing/speech problem, to run augmentative communication software. If the software also ran on webOS (it runs on iOS, Android, Nintendo DS(!), and the Nook Color(!)) I might have been able to swing it past the wife, but I still wouldn't be able to use it much.

You left out the most important question from your poll:

Waiting for a Pre 3 On Sprint!

I love WebOS, am impressed with Touch to Share, but IF I can't have the Pre3 - Then I have Nothing to touch with, In that case I'll stick with my Nook Color - which does Every thing else I would use a Tablet for.

Come on HP/Palm - get the Phones out, esp on Sprint!!

Surely you mean Pre3 unlocked for GSM. ;-)

Obscure small US CDMA network carrier is obscure small US CDMA network carrier.

I am waiting for the Pre3 first, need to determine (1) if my carrier will offer it, and (b) will I love it enough that I want to expand my webOS world with all the syncing coolness of the TouchPad. If I don't love the phone, I probably am not interested in the tablet.

Not sure, right now the nook color does all i need for a tablet. I use it for story book time with the kids and the odd browsing while watching TV. being a programmer no tablets really help me, at least work wise.

I'm with many others on here. If sprint doesn't get Pre3/Veer/unnamed slab phone, then no touchpad for me. If I were on att I'd currently be on a veer or unlocked pre2 and they'd have me waiting in line for it. I don't need a tablet, but I need a phone. Hopefully Richard Kerris or people within HP is reading these post as well!

Is there a possibility that the Pre 3 will be on 3 carriers? Thought may not be launched all at the same time?
