Wordpress Blogging App Coming to webOS 22

by Dieter Bohn Mon, 07 Dec 2009 11:09 am EST

Bloggers of the world: rejoice! webOS is slowly catching up to other platforms in the app category and we have another one to tick off: a full-fledged Wordpress blogging app.  The app will come from Keen Studios, a shift from their previous efforts with games like Checkers and Perfect Bounce.

The Wordpress app will allow you to post blogs, edit them, view other members, etc.  Some of the functionality will require a plugin called "WPre," so it will do a bit more than your average webOS app can.

Keen tells us they're pushing hard to get the app released in Beta form ASAP. A few more screenshots after the break

the design is so basic which could make blogging even more boring

I'll take boring for now if it means awesome functionality.

A particular blog's design elements are not controlled by the webOS app, but rather the blog itself. This is simply a convenient way of posting to an existing Wordpress blog, and as such, it's extremely welcome for bloggers out there. {Jonathan}

I'm willing to give it a little time to develop... This has the potential of being quite an app, if it would include the following features in the future (if not at launch):

1. Enhanced editor that allows for easy addition of HTML tags (for bold, italic, fonts, font colors, etc.). It would be great to have something that's like a WYSISYG editor, but I'd settle for something that allows for a set of "quick tags" to be created within settings and used within the editor at first.

2. Ability to upload pictures, sound, and video to the site's media gallery. An easy way to allow users to embed them (maybe keeping track of links somehow?) into posts once uploaded. (Linking and displaying this stuff kind of goes with the WYSIWYG editor idea above.)

3. Ability to connect with a WordPress blog administration interface, to allow for easy addition of themes, widgets, etc. This might be substantial enough to require its own separate app, but just thought I'd add it on anyhow.

If they had an app with all of the above, it would certainly be worth some money. Assuming it could ever get in the App Catalog (unsure, if it requires the use of a plug-in), I would think this could have the potential to be a featured/showcase app...

So is this expected homebrew? It seems it must be if it expects a device plug in.

Not a device plugin, the Wordpress install needs the WPre plugin to function.

Excellent

What does the WPre plugin in offer?

It creates an interface for the App to get and put information into the Wordpress DB. The only downside of this is it has the possibility of opening an attack vector for the web site. Jordan will need to test hacking into this new interface with something other than the WebOS App.

This is great news. From the screenshot, it looks like you can have a Wordpress blog that is plugged into a non-WP site. I sure hope this is true.

Anyone know if this will allow pics? Pixelpipe does text and pics for Wordpress (and many others) already.

This will be great. I've been wondering when somthing like this would come along. I hate having to write down ideas and set up the laptop in the hotel room, just to enter a small blog entry. I could with this, just pull over on the side of the road and enter it. How cool. Of course for bigger blog entries you would still want to use a computer.

You can just use Pixelpipe for now - no need for a laptop.

Kewl. I hope they do one for blogger, too. I just started a blog, tho I haven't posted yet.

That's ok. I'll maintain my web pages using keyed ssh from the terminal app.

Now get off my lawn.

I hate that word 'blog' too. Remember when people had these things called web pages?

I think this is great news, and look forward to it becoming a full-fledged application. Thank you, Keen Studios!

Now, if someone would just make a LiveJournal app for the Palm Pre, I think my app life would be complete. :)

Katharine - I've been working on a LiveJournal app for the Pre. It works decently now; here's the homebrew page for it. Let me know what you think!

Hey, thanks very much, gregstoll! As soon as I get my Pre, I'll take it for a test drive!

How much is it going to cost?

That's welcome news! I hope it has the capability to let you save drafts to edit or post later.

how does precentral choose what applications to "preview"? is just the ones that dieter or derek are friends with their developers? Especially this wordpress post. While it is cool, there isn't really much here. A couple of screenshots. Not even a video like the geostrings one we saw earlier. This isn't even the first time keen-studios has been on the front page! i remember some praising review of perfect bounce. come on give me a break that game is awful. Is keen-studios paying you guys? If precentral is really doing this a way to support devs, spread the love. I don't need to hear more about keen-studios. Just look at their site. it is full of empty promises. they keep promising so much but delivering so little.

http://wphoneplugin.org works for me.

WPhone can be installed on a Pre? Does it require funky Linux command line stuff?
