Your favorite social media apps [PC Brain Trust] 21

by Robert Werlinger Thu, 15 Jul 2010 9:02 am EDT

We asked you what your favorite social media application were, and you responded en masse.  Here are the apps that you and your fellow PreCentral readers simply cannot do without in the social media scene:

Facebook for webOS, free:  Developed by Palm's developer relations team, this Facebook app has seen rapid growth and is well on its way to becoming on of the best on any platform.

Tweed, $2.99:  One of the first and one of the best Twitter apps in the Catalog (and this blogger's personal favorite), Tweed's simplicity and speed have a good number of you hooked.

LinkedIn, free:  It's like Facebook, but exclusively for your professional goings on.  It hasn't been updated much since hitting the App Catalog last year, but it does the basics and it does them well.

Foursquare, free:  Zhephree's excellent Foursquare client let's you "check-in" to venues in style, all while updating your friends on your whereabouts via Twitter and Facebook and competing with them for mayorships at your favorite locals.

Digloo, $1.99:  A great Digg app for webOS that does everything you'd expect Digg to do while mobile: Digg and bury stories and comment, browse individual topics relevant to your interests and other such Digg-ey things.

Tweed over tweet me.... interesting. I may have to check back on tweed. Thanks

No mention of Gowalla (http://www.gowalla.com)? I find it more fun and useful than FourSquare.

Tweed is Faster but uglier.

i know its not really a social app, but i would love a proper skype.

I don't think Zhephree gets enough credit honestly. The guy updates the FourSquare beta app constantly always improving on it. He is probably one of my favorite app developers right now. FourSquare needs to pay him handsomely for his contributions.

I like Tweed cause Tweet Me takes a few more clicks than I like to see a picture or click a link. Tweet Me does look beautiful tho!

Agreed, Zhephree is one heck of a developer!

Hey, thanks guys! It sorta helps that I have fun doing it!

Definately must say Twee i a must have twitter client over tweed. Gowalla is a pretty nice addition to the list. and The facebook chat patch on preware.

Linked In? seriously? the app doesn't *do* anything! can't believe that was actually created by Linked In! I vote for zhephree to grab their API and make a Linked In app that doesn't suck.

Haha, if I used LinkedIn enough, I MIGHT be motivated to do that. That, and, I've already put waaaay too many hours into foursquare!

Zipsquare from the maker of Digloo is infinitely better than Foursquare by zephree. Nothing personal, but I like Zipsquare because it's free of the extra features and just let's me check in, no fuss.

Totally get what you're saying. You don't always need tips, or the Leaderboard. Sometimes you just wanna pull up the venue list and check-in. I had actually considered making an app like ZipSquare (Foursquare Lite, I imagined), but RMXDave beat me to it and I'm happy he did!

Not only do I not have the time to build an app like that, I'm just a big fan of Foursquare and if webOS has two choices for users, all the better!

Amen to that! I still use your official 4sq app on a daily basis (and the new beta looks great). Keep up the great work!

Tweed is great. Except that the current version broke image uploading (to all services) and conversation view. Hopefully they have an update very close or I'll have to consider switching.

speaking of photo uploads, how come foursquare has a photo upload section that has never worked?

Sorry, no. The new version of Twee is better than Tweed.

the webbrowser

I haven't used any FB app other than the one mentioned here, but if it's the best, the others must be dreadful. Still can't open a photo that somebody has commented on by clicking on the link. And I can't get rid of the red notifications box without clicking on each and every notification. Irritating enough to keep me going back to the plain mobile website instead of using an app.

Give us Yahoo messenger for the phone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I only used FB and foursquare on the list. But the others are great as well. Good thing they have come up with this idea. Good job on this. - James Stuckey
