Zcorder: Voice and System Sound Recording Come (via Homebrew) to the Pre 51
Just as video recording came to the Pre (via the homebrew Precorder app) well before Palm officially released its official version, now voice and audio recording have arrived unofficially as well, also from the webOS Internals team, via Zcorder.
Just publicly released as a beta on the webOS Internals feeds for WOSQI and Preware, Zcorder (formerly and confusingly also called Precorder, when it was in alpha testing form) allows the user to capture sound from either the Pre’s microphone or via “media capture,” recording the sound playing from another Pre application. The “vox” mode (for voice activation) triggers the microphone only when sound is detected. The user may configure the stream, bit rates and quality of the recordings, which are saved as MP3s in the /media/internal/recordings directory. Zcorder's recordings may be played either via the Pre’s onboard Music app (they show as Unknown artist/album tracks), and/or copied from the device in USB mode or other file transfer methods like the newest version of ZumoDrive. Zcorder also offers a play button which will play the most recently recorded sound file as if it were streaming music.
ZSoc, the primary developer behind Zcorder, has shared the following technical details with Jason Robitaille: “The 'Media Capture' mode can do many things, but it's primary purpose is to make/cut ringtones from your existing music files, or from another source like a youtube video. So it's a voice recorder + audio out capture recorder. Audio out/media stream/output stream/monitor stream/ however you want to word it. The verbiage in the app is "Media Capture." Voice activation (where it starts recording automatically when noice in the area is greater than a certain decibel) is coming soon. ie: press record, leave it in a room somewhere and it'll only record when it hears things and be paused otherwise.” According to ZSoc (aka forum member Prenosticator), “ZSoc did most of the labor, and PuffTheMagic is the genius behind the basic structure of the service. In long, everyone in webOS Internals had something to do with it.”
While most developers await Palm’s inclusion of microphone and camera access in a future update to the SDK (expected in the fall), the webOS Internals team has leapfrogged the official version with a functional, usable app that adds a critical missing feature to the Pre. Thanks, all!

WebOS Internals is always ahead of the curve making our phones better and better. We salute you guys.
+1 +1!
+1 plus a pinch to grow an inch
Homebrew FTW, thanks again to our awesome Dev Community!!

HELL YEAH!!!!! I write and produce music. At times I come up with lyrics or melodies and I often have to call my phone from another phone just to record the idea to voice mail. This is a much needed feature. WebOS your the best.
+1
Found it in preware 5 mins ago, got excited that it worked, was about to report to the forums but this article beat me to it, huh.
This is some great work from zsoc and the internals team, nice.
Finally, now I want my bluetooth to make voice dialing.
I heard the voice of ANSWERING MACHINE!!!
This is FANTASTIC! Thank you! One question... how do I delete a sound recording?
You can use Internalz to browse to the "recordings" folder and delete the file from the USB drive.

Thanks!
AWESOME!! And to all my Pre lovers Radio Shack is selling all pre acsseories like the touch stone kit for 19.99
Oh, man! I just bought the dual touchstone kit from the Precentral store. Should get it on Tuesday.
Ditto on the Awesome...this will be nice to have.
Not true I have the back door and the Touchstone for 19.99 dork
The kit isn't $19.99 just the touchstone base. The back and charger are all sold individually.
I bought a kit, touchstone base and Pre back, for $19.xx, was the same price as just the Touchstone.
same here just bought a touchstone kit battery cover and touchstone for 19.99 plus tax
Thanks for the tip. They are flying off the shelves. At least in my area of Columbus, Ohio.
I saw this tip at 1:40pm, called a booth in the nearby mall - nothing (as expected), called the closest store - they had 2. 10 minutes later I was in the store, but 1 of them was gone. I bought the last one. Called the next closest store and put 1 more touch stone kit on hold. 10 minutes later in the store I bought the last one. Again.
I was told the touch stones are discontinued. Palm stopped producing them? In preparation for the new hardware? I hope so.
so if we put the phone on speaker, we can record phone conversations/calls?
I don't think that would work, as the Microphone is being used by the phone process. I do miss CallRec app from my Treo. About the only thing I haven't replaced.
the KIT IS $19.99..... They sell both for the same price. If they are still any available.
got three kits for 20 bucks yesterday. It includes the touchstone and backing. I bought one for a friend and the other so I have a travel touchstone. The extra backing is just a bonus but since it was the same price, what the heck.
They are selling fast, better hurry if you want one.
Thank you Butters3605!
This is sweet news. Do I sense a Shazam-like app on the horizon?
That was my first reacton too. Though I believe Shazam still has a closed API, so not just anybody can tap into its services. There may be alternatives though.
Cool, could not get the Media Capture and may be a problem with Vox or not using the option properly.
Either way, great work and big Thumbs Up! Sorli...
"...Voice activation (where it starts recording automatically when noice in the area is greater than a certain decibel) is coming soon."
Vox button is present in the UI but it doesn't do anything yet, so that can't be the problem.
What do the touchstone have to do with this post?
anyway
Palm is lacking behind homebrew and what the phone can really do. I hope HP push them to release the APIs before fall!!
shut up borg queen
you meant lagging behind, right?
I really like that the Homebrew community gives us all these goodies, but I think it's just a bit too late with the imminent release of the EVO 4G on Sprint. Seems like us Pre users are getting features that have been on the iPhone/Android for the longest. It's like playing catchup the whole time.
*flame retardant suit on*
I say it like it is, so flame away.
Yer lookin' pretty silly standing there in that bulky suit.
I don't know why you refer to the voice recording feature - I don't think many people are sitting out there thinking that the only killer feature of the EVO 4G is voice recording.
When Palm release their next phone (or if they don't tell us what they're up to in the next few months) then I'll need to consider their options for what to do after the Pre. I really, really hope there's a great pre successor to choose but that's not up to me.
On the other hand 'imminent release' is just advance hype. I respect Palm a lot for not playing the FUD game.
Of course if you're just trolling for a reaction then keep the suit on and wait. I'd love to flame but I'm just not that insecure about owning a Pre. I've played with android (my wife went that way) and I haven't seen much that impresses me.
Worked great first try. Thank you!
hmmm.. Can't find it on preware?!
I selected List of Everything and then searched for Zcorder and it came right up! I installed it and have used it. Not bad at all! I will have to look into how you manager the files you create...I saw some mention of accessing the files and deleting old mp3 recordings...I'll find time...later...
Don't forget to refresh your feeds if you don't do that on every startup.
I love it too. One of the things I was really missing! Great job!!
will somebody tell me why we cant pause our video recorder?
Hopefully a real SIP client will be coming soon. Would love to be able to connect to my asterisk server from my pre. that would just rock!
Works great!
If it had the following features (in the app) it would be perfect.
1) Ability to trim the ends of a Media Capture.
2) Ability to edit the file name.
3) Ability to move the finished file into the Ringtone directory.
Thanks,
Mike
Cool...so is this... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qMUcXOKv-MI

How the heck did I not notice Zcorder in Preware? Thanks for posting this! Voice recording was THE one missing thing I wanted most on my Pre. It's nice to have this while we wait for the update.
I can give props where props are due, glad someone stepped up to the plate and did a recording app. But surely the minds that created this would have no trouble at all adding the ability to see the files you've recorded and rename/delete them...WITHOUT installing internalz and "browsing to xxx folder". What is this, DOS?
Maybe you missed the part where they stated that it's a Beta release.
I'd really like to try zcorder out but I cannot locate it in preware, search all. The webos internals feed is turned on. Any ideas?
can sum1 give me the link to dl the zcorder..ive looked in the beta files and unthing did they pull it from the site...????
Does anyone have any experience or know of anyone who has experience getting ZCorder to run on a Palm Pixi Plus with WebOS 1.4.5?
Thank you so very much!
