ZENandTECH 07: Mental beach-ball 26

Like the spinning hourglass or beachball on a computer, our heads can get stuck stuck thinking the same negative thoughts over and over again. This week on ZENandTECH, Georgia and Rene discuss ways to figure out why you're perseverating and how you can deal with it.

What is mental clutter
- Anything that keeps cycling in our mind and we cant seem to let go of it.
- Sometimes triggered by a past event or perhaps it is something that has just occurred.
- A recent even or personal encounter count trigger something from childhood.
- Causes us distress and doesn’t leave our mind like other life events.
Why do we get mental clutter?
- It's actually Beneficial.
- Most things that have evolved because it helps protect us.
- They helped the organism survive and reproduce.
If it was a detriment to us in the long run it probably wouldn’t have stayed with us. So there is probably a evolutionary benefit to this type of mental clutter occurrence.
Cognitive restructuring
| Strength of feeling (%) | What happened | Why do I feel this? | Solution | Outcomes | Updated feeling (%) |
- Every night pick one thought or feeling that is cycling through your head and causing you stress
- Rank the level of stress it's causing you
- Write down what happened to cause it
- Write down why you think what happened caused you to feel the way you do
- Write down potential solutions
- Try the solutions!
- Write down the outcome of your trial solution
- Rank the level of stress after you've tried the solution
If you don't feel better, repeat the process and try a different solution, even if that solution is acceptance that there is no ideal solution.
Thought journal
- Write down your cognitive restructuring each night.
- Look for patterns, things that are similar in nature.
These are usually our “wounds” things that we have not dealt with or have been hurt from when we were younger.
Tech picks
If it's too hard to write in a journal, try voice-to-text software!
- Android has voice-to-text built in
- There's Vlingo for Android, iPhone, (Windows Mobile, Nokia)
- Dragon Dictation is great for Mac/PC and iPhone/iPad

I'm feeling a slow slide for this site.
I'm afraid Derek wont have much say as he's not been around for as long as the other SPE peeps. Perhaps these imminent changes may have been why Deiter saw fit to part?
The post above is heaps messy, the photo is just bad. They both look uncomfortably uncertain. And the nano makes Georgia looks silly. I hope this isn't a sign of things to come.

If you listen to the first one posted on here, the lady says "yeah" at least 2.4 billion times. I turned it off because of this.
Furthermore, I agree whole-heartily that this has nothing to do with WebOS and has no business on here. I guess it is about who you know.

And, may I ask what does "perseverating" mean? Persevering with perspiration? :-)
I believe perseverating means to continue a response action after the stimulus has ceased. For example, a mouse that continues to obsessively press a button even after it stops giving food.

If this garbage were framed as a "why are you still using an original Palm Pre on Sprint?" after all this time type of question, then it would apply here. HP has really dropped the ball on making current WebOS users feel like we are included in future plans, and that is the problem. Talk to US, not the press, and they might be surprised at WHY most of us are happy with a 500MHz device and in many ways prefer it to the much faster devices that are out there.

WTfrak? How can they talk about clutter when this absolutely defines clutter, I keep looking at the URL and seeing precentral, but hearing what sounds like the sucking sound of the vacuum of an Oprahless world.
Question for PreCentral ... How can I get MY article, MY podcast and MY picture on the front page of PreCentral.net? I'm sure many other readers are wondering the same thing. I assure you that, unlike the ZENandTECH podcast, most of your readers would at least produce something that relates directly to webOS.
