Talkin' Palm - Edition 44

by Annie Latham Fri, 11 Jun 2010 11:53 am EDT

All kinds of news slid in at deadline, like Palm settling the class action suit and Apple "poaching" UI designer Rich Dellinger. Otherwise, the bulk of the "talk" seemed to center on how the EVO compared to its stable-mate, the original Palm Pre.  With the Pre celebrating its birthday, many found themselves at a crossroads -- stay with webOS or leap to Android?

Digital Daily's John Paczkowski also noted the story of Rich Dellinger becoming the Senior User Interface Designer at Apple:

"Dellinger, who was instrumental in developing Palm’s core Mojo app framework as well as the webOS notification system, has returned to Apple (AAPL), a company he previously worked for from 1999 to 2006. His new position: Senior user interface designer. Just what, exactly, he’ll be doing in that capacity remains to be seen, but I imagine it will have something to do with Apple’s newly rebranded iOS and its system alerts."

Let's Talk Palm!

PreCentral's Pixi Plus Review...  Dieter wrote: "If getting a tiny smartphone is your first priority, by all means consider the Pixi Plus, but be ready to accept some slowdowns. Once you accept that caveat, the Pixi is a fun and inexpensive choice for first time smartphone buyers."

From Palm's Blog -- The Winners Are...  Josh Marinacci of Palm’s developer relations team was so inspired by the Palm Spot video contest entries that he put together his own video that asks (and answers) the question “What makes webOS fans different from the rest?”

More Palm News: Shareholder Class Action is Settled - Palm announced that it and the other defendants in a Delaware putative stockholder class action lawsuit have entered into a memorandum of understanding with the plaintiff to settle the lawsuit, which was filed on May 5, 2010 in connection with the proposed acquisition of Palm by Hewlett-Packard Company.

A story in the San Jose Business Journal noted "some shareholders sued because they believed the $5.70 per share price was too low for Palm to accept. Palm did not disclose terms of the settlement, but said it will hold a special meeting June 25 when shareholders can vote on the HP deal."

Did the HTC EVO 4G Outsell the Pre or Not?  That seems to be the question this week.  On Monday, Sprint put out an announcement stating that Friday's sales of HTC EVO 4G marked "the largest quantity of a single phone sold in one day ever for Sprint - the record was previously held by both Samsung Instinct and Palm Pre. In addition, the total number of HTC EVO 4G devices sold on launch day was three times the number of Samsung Instinct and Palm Pre devices sold over their first three days on the market combined."

On Tuesday, a correction arrived with Sprint issuing a statement declaring the total number of HTC EVO 4G devices sold on the launch day was in line with the number of Samsung Instinct and Palm Pre devices sold over their first three days on the market combined.

"We inadvertently erred in the comparison," Sprint said in a statement on Tuesday.

One analyst, BTIG's Walter Piecyk said he was cutting his estimate for EVO sales in the first weekend to 150,000 from his prior estimate of 250,000 to 300,000.

And in a related EVO story, there was an issue with Qik, the 4G video chat app. The demand was so high (20x the normal workload) that the company had to pull the app.

Moving right along...

HP printers do the Smartphone thing...  HP just introduced a fleet of printers with Web access, their own e-mail addresses and touch screens. The plan is to enable people to print from Web services like Google Docs, and from smartphones and devices like the iPad from Apple.

Case of the Missing Device No Palm Pre Plus on the list of devices supported by Verizon's NFL Mobile app which is included as part of the monthly data plan for 3G Smartphones.
