webOS 2.0 due later this year

by Dieter Bohn Wed, 28 Jul 2010 8:19 pm EDT

We've been waiting for the next big update after webOS 1.4.5 (which we're still waiting on here in the US, by the way). That next update will have a slew of backend features that we broke down for you back in April: Microphone APIs, a radically faster and more efficient database backend with great cloud sync features, faster Javascipt, and plenty more.

Well we just heard from Jon Rubinstein himself at Fortune Brainstorm Tech: it's still due later this year and he called it "webOS 2.0." We're glad to see it's getting the "2.0" number and we're hoping that the "two point oh" means that we'll be seeing some great consumer-facing features in addition to the speed and backend improvements we've already heard about.

(Update: we suppose it's possible that the webOS 2.0 Rubinstein referred to is not the 'next version' we've been hearing about for months now, but two major releases in the next six months doesn't feel very likely to us.)
